1. What is Momenflogo and what is it used for
This medicine contains the active ingredient ibuprofen, belonging to a group of medicines
known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which work by relieving pain (analgesic action)
and reducing the symptoms of inflammation (anti-inflammatory action).
Momenflogo is indicated for the treatment of pain or inflammatory states in the following cases:
- pain of various origins and nature such as headache, toothache, menstrual pain, neuralgia (pain felt along the nerves), osteoarticular (bone) and muscular pain, pain from episiotomy (surgical incision performed during childbirth) and pain after childbirth, pain from dental extractions, post-operative pain, pain caused by minor injuries or trauma;
- inflammatory states (inflammatory rheumatic forms): rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Still's disease (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis);
- degenerative diseases (degenerative rheumatic forms) affecting the joints (osteoarthritis), at the level of the spine (cervical, dorsal or lumbar spondylosis), knee (gonarthrosis), hip (coxarthrosis), or affecting multiple joints (polyarthrosis), etc.
- extra-articular rheumatic forms such as tendinitis (inflammation of the tendons), fibrositis (of muscles and tissues), bursitis, myalgia (muscle pain), lumbago (back pain), scapulo-humeral periarthritis (inflammation of the fibrous tissues surrounding the joint), sciatica (leg pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve), radiculo-neuritis (inflammation of nerve roots and nerves).
2. What you need to know before taking Momenflogo
Do not take Momenflogo
- If you are allergic to ibuprofen, to other similar medicines or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- If you have previously suffered from stomach and intestinal disorders associated with bleeding (gastrointestinal haemorrhage or perforation related to previous treatments with anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) or a history of recurrent peptic ulcer haemorrhage/ulceration, with two or more distinct episodes of demonstrated ulceration or bleeding);
- If you suffer from stomach or intestinal disorders associated with the presence of lesions and bleeding (active and recurrent peptic ulcer);
- If you have bleeding in the stomach or intestine (gastrointestinal haemorrhage);
- If you have ongoing other bleeding such as cerebrovascular bleeding;
- If you suffer from chronic inflammatory diseases of the intestine such as inflammation of the colon with ulcers (ulcerative colitis) or inflammation affecting the digestive tract (Crohn's disease);
- If you suffer from severe liver or kidney problems (severe hepatic and renal insufficiency);
- If you suffer from bleeding disorders (haemorrhagic diathesis);
- If you suffer from severe heart problems (severe heart failure);
- If in the past, after taking acetylsalicylic acid or other anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), you have experienced swelling of the face due to fluid retention, especially around the mouth and eyes (angioedema), severe difficulty breathing (bronchospasm), breathing problems (asthma), skin irritation (urticaria), inflammation of the nasal cavities (rhinitis) or nasal polyps;
- If you suffer from systemic lupus erythematosus or other skin diseases (collagen diseases);
- If you are in the third trimester of pregnancy (See section “Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility”);.
- If you are affected by phenylketonuria, a condition in which blood and urine tests show altered levels of certain substances. In this case, you should not take Momenflogo as it contains aspartame;
- If you are already taking other anti-inflammatory medicines (including selective COX-2 inhibitors, see section “Other medicines and Momenflogo”).
Warnings and precautions – Pay particular attention with Momenflogo
What you need to know before taking Momenflogo
Signs of an allergic reaction to this medicine, including
breathing problems, swelling of the face and neck (angioedema) and chest pain, have been reported with ibuprofen.
Immediately stop Momenflogo and contact your doctor or emergency health service if you notice any of these signs.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Momenflogo and pay particular attention to
the following cases, bearing in mind that any risk is more likely at high doses and with prolonged therapies. The risk of side effects can be reduced by using the lowest effective dose for the
shortest possible time. Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment.
Risks of Stroke and heart attack: Anti-inflammatory/pain relievers containing ibuprofen such as
Momenflogo, may be associated with a modest increase in the risk of heart attack (“myocardial infarction”) or stroke, especially if administered at high doses. Do not exceed the dose
recommended or the duration of treatment.
You should discuss the therapy with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Momenflogo if you have:
- heart problems including heart attack, angina (chest pain) or if you have a history of heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, peripheral artery disease (poor circulation in the legs or feet due to narrowing or blockage of the arteries) or any type of stroke (including ‘mini stroke’ or “TIA”, transient ischaemic attack);
- high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, a family history of heart disease or stroke, or if you are a smoker.
Gastrointestinal risks: If you are elderly, the risk of side effects is greater,
especially bleeding and perforation of the stomach and intestines (gastrointestinal events) which can
be fatal. At any time, with or without warning symptoms or a previous history of serious
gastrointestinal events, bleeding in the stomach and intestines (gastrointestinal haemorrhage), formation of serious lesions (ulceration and perforation) have been reported, which can be fatal.
If you have had an ulcer in the past, the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration or perforation
is higher with increased doses of NSAIDs.
If you are elderly or if you have suffered from an ulcer, especially if the ulcer has also manifested
with bleeding or perforation (see section “Do not take Momenflogo”), as the risk of
bleeding, ulcer or perforation is higher, especially with higher doses of anti-inflammatory drugs. In these cases, you should start treatment with the lowest available dose, and
possibly consult your doctor to be prescribed a medicine that protects the stomach
(misoprostol or proton pump inhibitors). This possibility should also be considered
if you are taking low doses of acetylsalicylic acid or medicines that may increase the risk of
stomach and/or intestinal diseases (see section “Other medicines and Momenflogo”). If you have
a history of toxicity to the stomach and intestines, especially if you are elderly, you should report to the doctor
any unusual abdominal symptom (especially gastrointestinal bleeding) particularly
in the early stages of treatment. At doses higher than 1000 mg per day, a
prolongation of bleeding time may occur.
The doctor will suggest that you take specific medicines to protect your stomach such as misoprostol or
proton pump inhibitors, especially if you are taking other medicines (e.g. aspirin or medicines
that increase the risk of gastrointestinal problems).
If you should experience bleeding or an gastrointestinal ulcer, stop treatment
with Momenflogo and consult your doctor or the nearest hospital.
Take this medicine with caution and discuss the therapy with your doctor or pharmacist before
taking Momenflogo if:
- you are already taking other anti-inflammatory medicines (including selective COX-2 inhibitors, see section “Other medicines and Momenflogo”);
- you are taking other medicines that could increase the risk of ulceration or bleeding, such as oral corticosteroids, anticoagulants such as warfarin, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or antiplatelet agents such as acetylsalicylic acid (see section “Other medicines and Momenflogo”);
- You suffer or have suffered from high blood pressure (hypertension and/or heart failure) as cases of fluid retention and swelling due to fluid accumulation (edema) have occurred in association with NSAID therapy;
- you have suffered in the past from intestinal disorders (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease);
- you suffer from heart disorders (congestive heart failure from mild to moderate);
- you have previously had breathing problems (bronchospasm) especially following the use of medicines (see section “Warnings and precautions”); in patients who suffer or have suffered from bronchial asthma or allergic diseases, bronchospasm may worsen. In these cases, especially for prolonged treatments, your doctor may suggest that you undergo periodic tests;
- you suffer from disorders of coagulation or a decrease in the functioning of the heart, liver or kidneys; in these cases, periodic tests may be necessary, especially for prolonged treatments; hypersensitivity to Momenflogo can cause liver problems (hepatotoxic reactions);
- you suffer from lupus erythematosus, a skin disease of autoimmune character that causes lesions on the face and pain, or suffer from other skin diseases (collagen diseases). In this case, you should consult your doctor before taking Momenflogo;
- you are planning to become pregnant, as the use of Momenflogo may impair female fertility; the use of Momenflogo should be discontinued in women who have fertility problems or who are undergoing fertility investigations.
- If you have an infection - see paragraph «Infections» below;
Infections
Momenflogo can mask the symptoms of infections such as fever and pain. Therefore, Momenflogo may delay adequate treatment of the infection, which could increase the
risk of complications. This has been observed in pneumonia caused by bacteria and skin infections
related to varicella. If you are taking this medicine while you have an infection and the
symptoms of the infection persist or worsen, consult your doctor immediately.
Skin reactions
Serious skin reactions have been reported in association with treatment with ibuprofen including
exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis,
drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis
(AGEP). Stop taking Momenflogo and consult your doctor immediately if
you notice any of the symptoms related to these serious skin reactions described in section 4.
Vision problems
If you experience visual disturbances, stop treatment with this medicine and consult
an ophthalmologist.
Use caution when starting treatment with ibuprofen if you suffer from severe dehydration.
Risks in habitual and long-term use of analgesics are headache and analgesic nephropathy.
NSAIDs can cause an increase in liver function test results.
Other medicines and Momenflogo
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take
any other medicines, as these can influence or be influenced by treatment
with Momenflogo.
Taking Momenflogo, like other medicines similar to it (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,
analgesics, antipyretics), can cause allergic-type reactions (hypersensitivity), even serious (see the
section “Possible side effects”). Do not use Momenflogo if you are taking other medicines
anti-inflammatory (e.g. analgesics, antipyretics and other NSAIDs, such as acetylsalicylic acid/aspirin),
because the risk of side effects may increase. If you take products based on acetylsalicylic acid
for heart problems, do not take Momenflogo at the same time as it may reduce
the cardioprotective effect.
Use this medicine with caution and consult your doctor if you are taking the following medicines:
- medicines used to reduce inflammation for the treatment of allergies (oral corticosteroids), Momenflogo may increase the risk of ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines;
- medicines that have an anticoagulant effect (i.e. substances that thin the blood preventing the formation of clots, for example aspirin/acetylsalicylic acid, warfarin and ticlopidine). Momenflogo may increase the anticoagulant effect of these medicines, your doctor may therefore ask you to undergo appropriate tests to assess whether to modify your therapy. Momenflogo may also increase the risk of bleeding in the stomach or intestines when taken in conjunction with antiplatelet agents;
- medicines used to lower high blood pressure (diuretics, ACE inhibitors such as captopril, beta-blockers such as atenolol and angiotensin II antagonists such as losartan). Momenflogo may alter the effect of these medicines when taken together. Furthermore, if you have kidney problems, especially if you are elderly or dehydrated, Momenflogo may worsen your conditions if you are taking Momenflogo in conjunction with ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II antagonists; in these cases, you need to take an adequate amount of fluids, in addition, the doctor may periodically check the correct functioning of your kidneys after starting treatment; medicines used for the treatment of mental disorders based on lithium and phenytoin; Momenflogo may increase the concentrations of these substances in the blood;
- medicines used for the treatment of heart problems such as digoxin; Momenflogo may increase the concentration of this substance in the blood;
Even some other medicines can influence or be influenced by treatment with
Momenflogo. Therefore, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Momenflogo with other
medicines.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy
Before starting treatment, make sure you are not pregnant, and stop it if you find out you are.
Do not use Momenflogo in the last 3 months of pregnancy as it may harm the fetus or cause problems during childbirth. It may cause problems with the kidneys and heart of the fetus. It may affect your and your baby's tendency to bleed and delay or prolong labour more than expected.
You should not take Momenflogo in the first 6 months of pregnancy unless absolutely necessary and under the advice of a doctor. If treatment is needed during this period or during attempts to conceive, the minimum dose should be used for the shortest possible time.
From the 20th week of pregnancy, MOMENFLOGO can cause kidney problems in the fetus if taken for more than a few days, reducing the levels of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby (oligohydramnios) or causing narrowing of a blood vessel (ductus arteriosus) in the baby's heart. If treatment is needed for more than a few days, your doctor may recommend additional monitoring.
Breastfeeding
Avoid taking Momenflogo during breastfeeding.
Fertility
Do not take Momenflogo if you have fertility problems.
ChildrenThe use of the medicine is limited to adult patients.
Driving and operating machinery
This medicine can cause drowsiness, dizziness, headache and depression that can impair the ability to drive vehicles and use machinery. If these effects occur, avoid driving vehicles and using machinery. .
Momenflogo contains sucrose, sorbitol, aspartame, sodium and potassium
- sucrose:if you have been diagnosed with an intolerance to certain sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine;
- sorbitol:is a source of fructose. If your doctor has told you that you (or your child) are intolerant to certain sugars, or if you have a diagnosis of hereditary fructose intolerance, a rare genetic disease in which patients cannot metabolize fructose, talk to your doctor before you (or your child) take this medicine;
- aspartame: this medicine contains 20 mg of aspartame per sachet equivalent to 5 mg/g. Aspartame is a source of phenylalanine. It may be harmful if you have phenylketonuria, a rare genetic disease that causes a build-up of phenylalanine because the body cannot dispose of it properly;
- this medicine contains 67 mg of sodium(2.9 mmol) (the main component of table salt) per sachet. This is equivalent to 3.35% of the maximum recommended daily intake with the diet of an adult;
- this medicine contains 115 mg of potassium(2.9 mmol) per sachet: to be taken into consideration in patients with reduced kidney function or in patients following a low-potassium diet.
3. How to take Momenflogo
Take this medicine always exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
This medicine is only indicated for adults.
If you are taking this medicine for the treatment of rheumatic pains, take the first dose in the morning, when you wake up, and subsequent doses with meals.
The recommended dose is 1-3 sachets per day as directed by your doctor. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 1800 mg (3 sachets).
Dissolve the contents of one sachet in a glass of water (50-100 ml) and take it immediately after dissolving. The medicine must be taken on a full stomach.
The lowest effective dose for the shortest period necessary to relieve symptoms should be used.
If you have an infection, consult your doctor immediately if the symptoms (e.g. fever and pain) persist or worsen (see paragraph 2).
Use in the elderly
If you are an elderly person, consult your doctor because a dose reduction may be necessary.
Use in people with impaired renal, hepatic or cardiac function
If you are a person with impaired renal, hepatic or cardiac function, always consult your doctor because a dose reduction may be necessary. In cases of severe renal, hepatic or cardiac insufficiency, the use of Momenflogo is contraindicated (see paragraph “Do not take Momenflogo”)
If you take more Momenflogo than you should
If you have taken more Momenflogo than you should or if your child has taken this medicine by mistake, always contact a doctor or the nearest hospital to receive an opinion on the risk and advice on the actions to be taken.
If you take an excessive dose (overdose) of ibuprofen, you may more commonly experience the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, abdominal pain, deep sleep with reduced response to normal stimuli (lethargy), drowsiness, headache, dizziness, double vision, loss of muscle coordination (ataxia), severe muscle disorders (rhabdomyolysis), seizures, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), uncontrolled body movements (convulsions) and loss of consciousness. Symptoms of an overdose may appear within 4-6 hours of taking ibuprofen.
Rarely, you may experience: uncontrolled eye movements (nystagmus), lowering of body temperature (hypothermia), kidney effects, bleeding from the stomach and intestines, profound loss of consciousness (coma), temporary cessation of breathing (apnea), diarrhea, reduction of activity of the nervous system (depression of the Central Nervous System) and respiratory activity (depression of the respiratory system).
In addition, you may also experience: disorientation, a state of excitement, fainting, low blood pressure (hypotension), decrease or increase or alteration of heartbeats (bradycardia or tachycardia).
In cases of severe poisoning, metabolic acidosis (increased acids in the blood) may occur. Overdose symptoms may include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting (possibly with traces of blood), headache, ringing in the ears, confusion, and uncontrolled eye movements.
At high doses, drowsiness, chest pain, palpitations, loss of consciousness, seizures (especially in children), weakness and dizziness, blood in the urine, low levels of potassium in the blood, feeling cold to the body, and breathing problems have been reported.
If you take significantly high doses of ibuprofen, you may experience serious damage to the kidneys (renal failure) and liver.
An exacerbation of asthma may occur in asthmatic subjects.
In case of accidental ingestion/taking of an excessive dose of Momenflogo, immediately inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
If you have any doubts about the use of Momenflogo, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
If you forget to take Momenflogo
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed sachet.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, STOP usingMomenflogo immediately and
consult your doctor or the nearest hospital where you will undergo appropriate and specific
treatment:
- reddish, non-raised patches, target-shaped or circular on the trunk, often with central blisters, skin peeling, ulcers of the mouth, throat, nose, genitals and eyes. These serious skin rashes may be preceded by fever and flu-like symptoms (erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis)
