1. What is VISUMETAZONE and what it is used for
VISUMETAZONE is a medicine for ophthalmic (eye) use that contains dexamethasone as the active
ingredient.
What it is used for:
- VISUMETAZONE is used in the treatment of eye inflammations(allergic conjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, keratitis, episcleritis, rheumatic iritis, uveitis). If you do not feel better or if you feel worse after the prescribed days of therapy, consult your doctor.
2. What you need to know before using VISUMETAZONE
Do not use VISUMETAZONE
- if you are allergicto the active ingredient or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- if you have:
- high internal pressure of the eye
- acute herpes simplex infections and most viral diseases of the front of the eye (cornea), unless treated simultaneously with specific drugs; inflammation of the eye with superficial damage to the cornea even in the early stages (ulcerative and viral keratitis); positive fluorescein staining
- fungal infections of the eye (tuberculosis, mycosis)
- inflammation of the eye and the eyelid margin with the presence of pus (purulent and herpetic blepharoconjunctivitis, acute purulent ophthalmia) which may be masked or aggravated by anti-inflammatory drugs of the desamethasone class (corticosteroids)
- inflammation and infections of the eyelid (stye) during breastfeeding.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor before using VISUMETAZONE and use it under medical supervision.
Desamethasone, like anti-inflammatory drugs of the same class (corticosteroids),
can occasionally mask, activate or aggravate an infection. If you suspect an
infection, you should intervene with additional antibiotic therapy. If infections do not
respond promptly, you should stop administering VISUMETAZONE,
until the infection has been adequately controlled with other therapeutic measures.
Prolonged local use of this type of drug makes the cornea particularly
susceptible to fungal infections: you should consider this possibility in the presence of lesions
(ulcerations) of the cornea.
Prolonged use for 1-2 weeks or more can increase the pressure inside
the eye and this can lead to vision loss; therefore, it is necessary to measure the
intraocular pressure, especially if you have glaucoma (high pressure inside the eye) or if
you have close relatives with glaucoma.
Do not exceed the indicated doses.
Do not administer for more than 7 days without consulting an ophthalmologist.
Rarely, at the recommended doses, phenomena due to absorption
also in other areas of the body have occurred.
Prolonged use can determine the appearance of a clinical picture due to excessive
concentration of anti-inflammatory drugs (corticosteroids) characterized by:
- high blood pressure, asthenia, weakness and potassium deficiency, disorder in the water-electrolyte balance of the blood (metabolic alkalosis), fluid retention with consequent swelling (edema), alterations in heart rate and alteration in the sleep/wake cycle;
- behavioral disturbances, in predisposed subjects (psychic disorders). Very prolonged use can determine:
- insufficient production of adrenal hormones (secondary adrenal insufficiency).
Consult your doctor if you feel swelling and weight gain around the trunk and on the face
since these are usually the first manifestations of a syndrome called
Cushing's syndrome.
Suppression of adrenal gland function can develop after
discontinuation of prolonged or intensive treatment with VISUMETAZONE. Consult
your doctor before stopping treatment on your own. These risks are important
especially in children and patients treated with a medicine called ritonavir or
cobicistat.
Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances.
Children and adolescents
Safety and efficacy have not been established.
Other medicines and VISUMETAZONE
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or
may take any other medicines, including over-the-counter medicines.
No interactions with other drugs are known.
Consult your doctor if you are using ritonavir or cobicistat, as they may increase the
level of desamethasone in the blood ..

If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if
you are breastfeedingwith breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using
this medicine.
- Use the medicine only when necessary and under the direct supervision of your doctor.
- Do not breastfeed while using the product.
Driving and operating machinery
VISUMETAZONE does not interfere with the ability to drive vehicles and operate
machinery.
VISUMETAZONE contains sodium ethylmercury thiosalicylate.
This medicine contains sodium ethylmercury thiosalicylate (an organomercurial
compound). It may cause allergic reactions (see section “Possible side effects”).
3. How to use VISUMETAZONE
Use this medicine following the instructions of your doctor exactly. If you have any doubts
consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is:
Adults
Attack therapy: Under direct medical supervision, instill 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac every hour during the day and every 2 hours during the night.
If you observe a favorable response, reduce the dosage to 1 drop every 4 hours. A further
reduction in the dosage to 1 drop 3-4 times a day may be sufficient to control
the symptoms.
Children and adolescents
Safety and efficacy have not been established.
If you use more VISUMETAZONE than you should
In case of ingestion/accidental intake of an excessive dose of VISUMETAZONE
immediately inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital. In case of
overdose, discontinue treatment and adopt appropriate therapy.

Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

- formation of opacity on the lens of the eye (cataract)

(especially in women), weakness and muscle atrophy, purple stretch marks on the skin of the
