Read this leaflet carefully before using this medicine as it contains important
information for you.
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or
pharmacist has told you.

1. What is OFTALMIL and what is it used for
OFTALMIL contains two active ingredients, zinc sulfofenate and naphazoline hydrochloride, with
anti-inflammatory and decongestant action on the eyes.
OFTALMIL is indicated in all cases of eye redness, when you have the sensation of having a
foreign body in the eye or a feeling of heaviness of the eyelids.
See your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 4 days.
2. What you need to know before you use OFTALMIL
Do not use OFTALMIL
- if you are allergic to zinc sulfofenate, naphazoline hydrochloride or any of the ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from angle-closure glaucoma, a disease that affects the optic nerve;
- if you have developed serious eye infections;
- in children under 6 years of age (See section “Children”).
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using OFTALMIL.
Consult your doctor before using this medicine in the following cases:
- you have infections, pus or foreign bodies in the eye;
- you have suffered an eye injury (mechanical damage);
- your eyes have been damaged following contact with corrosive chemicals (chemical damage) or heat. Also consult your doctor in cases where these disorders have occurred in the past.
Use OFTALMIL with caution and inform your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- you suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension);
- your thyroid gland is overactive (hyperthyroidism);
- you suffer from heart problems (cardiac disorders);
- you have high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) or suffer from diabetes;
- you are taking medicines for the treatment of depression (antidepressants) (See section “Other medicines and OFTALMIL”).
Children
The use of OFTALMIL is contraindicated in children under 6 years of age (See section “Do not use
OFTALMIL”).
Other medicines and OFTALMIL
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other
medicines.
Use OFTALMIL with caution and inform your doctor if you are taking medicines used for the treatment
of depression (antidepressants).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding,
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you can use OFTALMIL.
Driving and using machines
No effects on the ability to drive and operate machines are known.
OFTALMIL contains para-hydroxybenzoates
This medicine contains para-hydroxybenzoates which may cause allergic reactions (including
delayed reactions).
3. How to use OFTALMIL
Use this medicine following exactly as stated in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is 1-2 drops of eye drops, several times a day.
Apply the eye drops to the lower part of the eye (inferior conjunctival fornix).
You can use this medicine even if you wear contact lenses.
After a short period of treatment, inform your doctor if you do not notice an improvement in your condition or if you experience a worsening of symptoms.
Do not exceed the recommended doses and do not use this medicine for more than 4 consecutive days.
If you exceed the recommended doses even for short periods of time, OFTALMIL may cause serious adverse effects (See the section “Possible side effects”).
Consult your doctor if the disorder occurs repeatedly or if you have noticed any recent change in your characteristics.
If you use more OFTALMIL than you should
A significantly higher use than the recommended dose of OFTALMIL, for example, in case of accidental ingestion of OFTALMIL, may cause serious adverse effects on the heart and blood circulation. Symptoms may include: reduced heart rate (bradycardia), severe headache, nausea, vomiting, breathing problems, increased heart rate (tachycardia) and chest pain.
In particular, in children accidental ingestion may cause marked sedation.
If adverse effects occur or in case of accidental intake/ingestion of an overdose of OFTALMIL, seek immediate medical attention.
If you forget to use OFTALMIL
Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Frequency not known(the frequency cannot be estimated from available data)
- pupil dilation;
- increased blood pressure (hypertension), heart problems (cardiac disorders), increased blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) if the medicine is absorbed into the whole body (systemic effects from absorption);
- increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) if you are predisposed;
- nausea;
- headache;
- allergic reactions (hypersensitivity). In this case, stop treatment and inform your doctor who will indicate appropriate therapy;
- temporary burning sensation if the eyes are very irritated, especially during the first applications of the medicine.
These side effects are generally transient. However, when they occur, it is advisable to
consult your doctor or pharmacist.

this medicine.
5. How to store OFTALMIL
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the packaging after “Exp.”.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month and the product in intact packaging,
correctly stored.
Store at a temperature not exceeding 30 °C.
After the first opening of the container, use the medicine within 30 days.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to
dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What OFTALMIL contains
- The active ingredients are zinc sulfofenate and naphazoline hydrochloride. 100 ml of eye drops contain 0.020 g of zinc sulfofenate and 0.016 g of naphazoline hydrochloride.
- The other ingredients are: methylparaben, propylparaben, menthol, sodium chloride, distilled water of Hamamelis virginiana, distilled water of Rosa gallica, distilled water of Malva silvestris.
