1. WHAT DIARSTOP IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
DIARSTOP is an antidiarrheal, used for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea, capable of
slowing down intestinal motility. Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse
after a period of two days of treatment.
2. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TAKE DIARSTOP
Do not take DIARSTOP
- If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active ingredient or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- If you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding (see section “Pregnancy and breastfeeding”).
- If you need to maintain normal intestinal motility
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking DIARSTOP even if acute diarrhea has occurred in the past. Because diarrhea can induce a considerable loss of fluids and salts, it is advisable to drink plenty of fluids to replenish the losses. It may be useful to take aqueous solutions based on sugar and salts.
Do not take this medicine for uses other than those intended (see section 1) and do not
ever take a dose higher than the recommended one (see section 3). In patients who have
taken an excessive dose of loperamide, the active ingredient of DIARSTOP, serious
heart problems (with symptoms including a rapid or irregular heartbeat) have been reported.
Children
DIARSTOP should not be given to children under 12 years of age.
Other medicines and DIARSTOP
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take
any other medicine.
Interactions with drugs that slow down intestinal motility (e.g. anticholinergics) may occur, as they may potentiate the effects of loperamide. Concomitant use of cytochrome CYP450 inhibitors and P-glycoprotein inhibitors is not recommended.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
DIARSTOP is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
If you are pregnant, suspect or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
with breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Driving and operating machinery
DIARSTOP does not impair the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
DIARSTOPcontains lactose. If your doctor has diagnosed you with an intolerance to some sugars
(such as lactose), contact him before taking this medicine.
3. HOW TO TAKE DIARSTOP
Take this medicine following exactly as stated in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
DIARSTOP can be used in adults and children over 12 years of age.
The capsules should not be chewed, but swallowed with a little water or other beverage.
The recommended initial dose is 2 capsules to be taken at the same time, one after the other.
Following the initial dose, take 1 capsule after each loose stool (unformed).
As stools return to normal, reduce the dose and stop treatment in case of
constipation and disappearance of diarrhoea. Do not take more than 8 capsules per day.
Warning: it is recommended not to exceed the recommended doses. Do not use for more than two days.
Consult your doctor and stop taking the capsules if the condition occurs
repeatedly or if you have noticed any recent change in its characteristics.
If you take more DIARSTOP than you should
If you have taken too much DIARSTOP, contact your doctor or hospital immediately for advice. The
symptoms may include: increased heart rate, irregular heartbeat, changes
in heartbeat (these symptoms can have potentially serious and life-threatening consequences), muscle stiffness, uncoordinated movements, drowsiness, difficulty urinating or
weak breathing.
Compared to adults, children's reaction to high doses of DIARSTOP is stronger. If a
child takes an excessive amount or exhibits some of the aforementioned symptoms, contact
your doctor immediately.
In case of overdose, including that determined by impaired liver function,
constipation and effects resulting from depression of the Central Nervous System may occur
such as: stupor, miosis (constriction of the pupil), excessive muscle tone, slowing of
breathing.
In case of accidental ingestion of an excessive dose of DIARSTOP, contact
your doctor or the nearest hospital immediately.
In case of overdose, the measures taken may include: gastric lavage, induction
of vomiting, use of enema or administration of laxatives. Urgent measures may
include: injection of naloxone, repeating the injection after 1-3 hours if necessary, monitoring
the patient for at least 48 hours to detect any worsening of the depression of the
Central Nervous System.
Children are more sensitive to the effects of loperamide overdose than adults.
Therefore, it is recommended to keep the product out of their reach because accidental ingestion, especially in children under 4 years of age, can cause constipation and depression
of the Central Nervous System with drowsiness and slowing of breathing. In such cases, the patient must be
kept under close observation for 48 hours.
If you forget to take DIARSTOP
Do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten one, but resume the normal dosage
as indicated.
If you stop taking DIARSTOP
No effects due to discontinuation of treatment have been found.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medicines, DIARSTOP can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Rarely, mild abdominal pain and dry mouth have been reported.
