1. WHAT IS CITOCARTIN AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR
Citocartin is a local anesthetic (a substance that reduces or abolishes sensitivity in a part of the
body). This medicine is used by the dentist to anesthetize certain areas of the mouth
before performing:
- Routine procedures, such as simple single or multiple tooth extractions, cavity preparation and crown post preparation;
- More complicated surgical procedures that require deep analgesia and a reduction of blood flow in the surgical field, such as surgery on the mucous membranes, bone or pulp (soft tissue located inside the tooth), osteotomy (extraction of fractured teeth), prolonged surgical procedures, percutaneous osteosynthesis, cystectomy, mucogingival operations, apicoectomy.
2. BEFORE USING CITOCARTIN
Do not use CITOCARTIN
- If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active ingredients (articaine and adrenaline) or to any of the excipients of CITOCARTIN, or to other local anesthetic agents of the amide type, if you have heart problems, particularly severe disturbances of heart rhythm and conduction such as: paroxysmal tachycardia (sudden increase in heart rate) and high-frequency arrhythmias (very frequent irregular heartbeats), severe bradycardia (very reduced heart rate), second and third degree atrioventricular block.
- If you have acute heart failure (inability of the heart to pump blood throughout the body).
- If you have had a recent myocardial infarction or recent coronary bypass surgery (cardiac surgery).
- If you suffer from unstable angina (severe chest pain).
- If you have severe hypotension (low blood pressure).
- If you suffer from severe untreated or uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure).
- If you have severe arteriopathy (obstruction of the arteries).
- If you suffer from myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness).
- If you suffer from an eye disease known as closed-angle glaucoma.
- If you suffer from hyperthyroidism (disease resulting from an excess of thyroid hormones in the blood).
- If you have been diagnosed with a pheochromocytoma (a rare tumor of the adrenal glands).
- If you are taking medications for the treatment of depression such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants.
- CITOCARTIN is contraindicated in children under 4 years of age.
Never use the product in anesthetics at the level of the terminal circulatory zone
Furthermore, intravenous administration and in particularly inflamed or
infected areas are contraindicated.
Pay particular attention with CITOCARTIN:
- in case of kidney or liver disorders;
- in case of diabetes;
- in case of heart problems (angina pectoris);
- in case of arteriosclerosis (progressive hardening and narrowing of the arteries);
- in case of significant blood coagulation disorders or if you are taking anticoagulants (drugs that prevent the formation of thrombi);
- if you are taking non-cardioselective β-blockers (used for the treatment of hypertension);
- if you have a previous history of epilepsy; Before treatment with Citocartin, your dentist will assess your health conditions and inject the anesthetic with caution and in small doses, after a preliminary aspiration and at all times maintaining verbal contact with you, suspending administration at the first sign of alarm (burning, tingling, electric shock sensation).
Use of CITOCARTIN with other medicines:
The product must be used with extreme caution if you are taking:
- Oral antidiabetics (medicines for the treatment of diabetes).
- Anticoagulants such as heparin and acetylsalicylic acid (drugs that prevent the formation of thrombi): patients undergoing therapy with these medicines have an increased tendency to bleeding.
- β-blockers non-cardioselective (medicines used for the treatment of hypertension): the
combined treatment may determine a sudden increase in blood pressure.
- Halothane (inhalation anesthetic): the combined treatment may cause arrhythmias.
- Digoxin: risk of arrhythmias. Inform your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including those available without a prescription.
Use of CITOCARTIN with food and beverages:
The patient can eat after regaining sensitivity.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Ask your doctor for advice before taking any medicine.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, Citocartin should only be used after consulting
your doctor and weighing the risk/benefit ratio in your case.
Consult your doctor if you suspect you are pregnant or wish to plan a pregnancy.
Driving and using machinery:
No studies have been conducted on the ability to drive vehicles and use machinery.
The dentist will have to assess whether the patient is fit to drive vehicles or
use machinery after the procedure.
Important information about some excipients of CITOCARTIN
The product contains sodium metabisulfite: in sensitive subjects, especially those with a history of
asthma or allergy, it can rarely cause severe allergic reactions and bronchospasm.
CITOCARTIN contains less than 1 mmol of sodium (23mg) per maximum daily dose and is therefore
considered essentially sodium-free.
CITOCARTIN contains adrenaline which can cause local tissue necrosis and systemic toxicity, therefore the usual precautions for the administration of
adrenaline must be observed.
3. HOW TO USE CITOCARTIN
Dosage and route of administration
This product must only be administered by your dentist, who will decide the amount of product to
administer in your case.
The dentist must use the minimum effective dose, taking into account the type of procedure,
age, weight and physical condition of the patient.
The maximum dose for adults and children over 4 years of age is 7 mg/Kg of body
weight.
The anesthetic solution should be injected slowly into the oral cavity.
In case of overdose:
If the following symptoms appear, immediately inform your doctor:
restlessness, tremor, drowsiness, headache, difficulty speaking, hearing difficulties, nausea,
vomiting, metallic taste, dizziness, ringing in the ears, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure,
feeling of warmth, sweating, cardiac disorders (increased heart rate, feeling of tightness
in the chest), muscle contractions.

4. POSSIBLE UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS
Like all medicines CITOCARTIN can cause undesirable effects although not all people
will experience them
The frequency of undesirable effects is defined as follows:
very common (greater than 1 in 10 people)
common (greater than 1 in 100 and less than 1 in 10 people)
uncommon (greater than 1 in 1000 and less than 1 in 100 people)
rare (greater than 1 in 10,000 and less than 1 in 1000 people)
very rare (less than 1 in 10,000 people, including isolated cases).
Heart disorders
Rare:
Bradycardia (reduction in heart rate), tachycardia (acceleration of the heartbeat)
cardiovascular depression and cardiac arrest.
Nervous system disorders
Rare:
Restlessness, disorientation, tremors, drowsiness, paresthesia (tingling), headache
metallic taste, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), mydriasis, trismus, convulsions, anxiety;
Nerve injury, reduced sensitivity (hypersensitivity) and changes in taste may occur
following an incorrect injection technique or in case of particular patient conditions.
Eye disorders
Rare:
During and immediately after anesthesia, rare transient visual disturbances (diplopia),
photophobia (excessive sensitivity to light), ptosis (drooping eyelid) may occur.
Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders
Rare:
Tachypnea (very rapid breathing), bronchodilation, retrosternal and pharyngeal pain.
Gastrointestinal disorders
Rare:
Nausea, vomiting.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders:
Very rare:
Skin rashes, itching, urticaria, angio-edema, necrosis
Metabolism and nutrition disorders
Rare:
Increased metabolism
Vascular disorders:
Rare:
Hypotension (lowering of blood pressure), hypertension (increase in blood pressure
arterial).
Systemic disorders and conditions related to the site of administration:
Very rare:
Allergic reactions with bronchospasm, laryngeal edema up to cardiorespiratory collapse
due to anaphylactic shock.
Rare: feeling of heat, sweating, increased body temperature; appearance of lesions in the
point where the injection was made (ischemia and necrosis).

5. HOW TO STORE CITOCARTIN
Expiry date: see the expiry date printed on the packaging.
The expiry date refers to the product in intact packaging, correctly stored.
Caution: do not use the medicine after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
Do not store at a temperature above 25°C.
Keep the cartridges in the outer packaging to protect them from light.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your
pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help to protect
the environment.
Keep the medicine out of the reach and sight of children.
The doctor must not use CITOCARTIN after the expiry date which is printed on the
cartridge or the outer packaging.
The expiry date refers to the last day of the month
The dentist must not use CITOCARTIN if they notice visible signs of deterioration such as
a change in the color of the solution, the presence of foreign bodies and a damaged cartridge.
6. OTHER INFORMATION
What CITOCARTIN contains
The active ingredients are articaine hydrochloride and L-adrenaline. Each millilitre of solution contains
articaine hydrochloride 40 mg and L-adrenaline tartrate equivalent to 10 or 5 micrograms of adrenaline.
The excipients are: sodium chloride, sodium metabisulfite and water for injections.

Description of the appearance of CITOCARTIN and contents of the pack
CITOCARTIN is a clear and colourless solution packaged in 1.7ml glass cartridges with a
closure consisting of a plunger and pierceable elastomer gasket and an aluminium cap.
Each pack contains 50 cartridges of 1.7 ml.
