1. What is Atropina Farmigea and what is it used for
Atropina Farmigea is a medicine that dilates the pupil and stops the accommodation of the eye (mydriatic
cycloplegic).
This medicine is used in surgical events and/or in traumas caused by burns and caustic substances.
2. What you need to know before using Atropina Farmigea
Do not use Atropina Farmigea
- if you are allergic to atropine sulfate or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you have an optic nerve disease called glaucoma, or if you are prone to glaucoma;
- if you suffer from asthma;
- if you have a narrowing at the outlet of the stomach (pyloric stenosis);
- if you have adhesions between the iris and the lens of the eye.
The eye drops should not be used in children under three years of age (see “Children”). An excess of
dose in children or in particularly predisposed subjects can cause general toxic reactions.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Atropina Farmigea.
Use the medicine with caution if you are over 40 years of age due to the risk of triggering an optic nerve
disease (glaucoma) not previously detected.
The medicine, if accidentally ingested or if used for a long period at excessive doses, can determine
toxic phenomena. Atropina eye drops are to be used exclusively for topical ocular administration, avoiding
instillation when the mucosa or skin are inflamed or otherwise damaged.
Children
The eye drops should not be used in children under three years of age (see “Do not use Atropina Farmigea”).
An excess of dose in children or in particularly predisposed subjects can cause general toxic reactions.
This medicine contains boron and may compromise fertility in the future.
Other medicines and Atropina Farmigea
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other
medicines, including those available without a prescription.
There is a normal interaction between the parasympatholytic activity of Atropine with cholinergic drugs and
cholinesterase inhibitors which is advantageously used to control both its topical effect
(Pilocarpine) and its possible systemic effect (Physostigmine).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
If you are pregnant, use the eye drops only if absolutely necessary and under the direct control of
your doctor.
Driving and operating machinery
Visual disturbances resulting from the administration of the medicine are limiting for the performance of
the aforementioned activities. Do not drive vehicles or operate machinery before your vision becomes clear.
3. How to use Atropina Farmigea
Use this medicine following the instructions of your doctor exactly. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or
pharmacist.
The recommended dose is:2 or more drops (according to specific needs on a case-by-case basis) instilled into the inner part of the eyelid (into the conjunctival sac), or possibly introduced by the doctor under the mucous membrane lining the white part of the eye (subconjunctival) or behind the eyeball (retrobulbar).
10 drops of "single-dose eye drops" correspond on average to a volume of 0.5 ml.
Instructions for use:
Remove a single-dose container from the sachet and shake it before opening, to homogenize the solution contained within.
Open the single-dose container by detaching the cap above the dropper nozzle.
By applying slight pressure on the body of the container, allow the medicine to drip into the inner part of the eyelid in the desired quantity.
Caution: the medicine does not contain antimicrobial preservatives suitable for preserving it from occasional contamination during use. Use the "single-dose eye drops" for a single administration and discard the unused portion of the "single-dose eye drops".
If you use more Atropina Farmigea than you should
An overdose in children or in particularly predisposed subjects may cause general toxic reactions.
The pupillary dilation effect of the medicine is antagonized by Pilocarpine eye drops and
Acetylcholine.
In case of accidental ingestion/intake of an excessive dose of Atropina Farmigea, immediately notify your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
If you forget to use Atropina Farmigea
Do not use a double dose to compensate for forgetting the previous dose.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
With Atropina Farmigea, the following side effects may occur:
- decreased tone of the urinary bladder and the speed of urination
- sudden inability to empty the bladder (acute urinary retention), especially in the elderly
- decreased secretions of the nose, bronchi and tears, resulting in irritation of the mucous membranes normally lubricated by them.
- increased heart rate (tachycardia) with palpitations
- irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
- sensitivity to light (photophobia)
- increased pressure inside the eye
- follicular conjunctivitis,
- ocular edema,
- ocular hyperemia and palpebral eczema,
- blurred vision and temporary normal mydriatic action of atropine (which causes mydriasis and cycloplegic action leading to transient loss of accommodation).
- hypersensitivity with symptoms of rash
- dry mouth
- delay in gastric secretion
- lowering of tone of the intestinal muscles
- constipation.
- loss of appetite
- muscle weakness
- drowsiness,
- headache
- decrease in organic secretions (including decreased sweating causing fever)
- confusional state,
- hallucination and excitation (agitation)
- facial flushing

medicine.
5. How to store Atropina Farmigea
Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the packaging after “Scad.”. The expiry
date refers to the last day of that month. The expiry date refers to the product in
intact packaging, correctly stored.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of
medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What Atropina Farmigea contains
- The active ingredient is atropine sulfate. 100 ml of eye drops contain 1 g of atropine sulfate.
- The other ingredients are: boric acid, borax, water for injections.

Instructions for use of the container
In case of administration by subconjunctival or retrobulbar injection, withdrawal of the medicine using a
syringe fitted with a needle is facilitated by the prior removal, by cutting with a sterilised pair of scissors, of the
dropper tip.
The medicine does not contain antimicrobial preservatives capable of protecting it from accidental contamination during
use. It is therefore necessary to use the “single-dose eye drops” for a single application and in a single
patient, and then discard the unused portion of the “single-dose eye drops”.
