1. What is ALAXA and what is it used for
ALAXA is a laxative, whose active ingredient is bisacodyl, which is used to facilitate
bowel evacuation. The laxative effect is obtained thanks to bisacodyl’s ability to
soften the stool and increase the speed of intestinal transit.
This medicine is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation.
Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a short period of
treatment.
2. What you need to know before taking ALAXA
Do not take ALAXA if:
- you are allergic to the active ingredient or similar substances (for example, sodium picosulfate) or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- you have a sudden abdominal pain or any situation of abdominal pain whose cause you do not know (for example, you have appendicitis);
- you have nausea or vomiting;
- you have inflammation of the stomach or intestine (gastroenteritis);
- you have an obstruction or narrowing (stenosis) of the intestine;
- you have rectal bleeding whose cause you do not know;
- you are in a severe state of dehydration, which is manifested by a dry and sticky mouth, thirst, scarcity of urine, absence or scarcity of tears and dry skin;
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding (see “ Pregnancy andbreastfeeding”).
Do not use ALAXA in children under 3 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor before using ALAXA:
- for the use of the medicine in children between 3 and 12 years of age;
- if your constipation is chronic or if you have repeated episodes of constipation;
- if the need for a laxative derives from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of evacuations) that has lasted for more than two weeks;
- if you have rectal bleeding;
- if you have heart disease or suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension);
- if you have diabetes;
- if you are elderly or not in good health.
If the use of the laxative fails to produce effects after a short period of treatment,
consult your doctor.
You should know that the abuse of laxatives (i.e. frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses)
can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially
potassium) and other important nutrients. In the most severe cases, the decrease in potassium can
cause heart or muscle disorders, especially if you are undergoing
concurrent treatment with certain heart medications (cardiac glycosides), with medications
that increase urine production (diuretics) or with those used to treat
inflammation (corticosteroids).
Avoid frequent or prolonged use of the medicine as it may cause habituation and
dependence (i.e. the need to progressively increase the dosage and not being able to
do without the medicine) and inflammation of the intestine (atonic colitis), as well as
chronic constipation and loss of normal bowel functions (intestinal atony).
Other medicines and ALAXA
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might
take any other medicines, and in particular if you are taking:
- certain medicines for the heart (cardiac glycosides);
- medicines that increase urine production (diuretics);
- medicines used to treat inflammation (corticosteroids). Medicines used to reduce stomach acidity (antacids) may alter the effect of ALAXA; leave an interval of at least one hour before taking the laxative. Avoid taking laxatives and other medicines at the same time, as laxatives stimulate bowel movements and may decrease the absorption of medicines taken by mouth (orally); after taking a medicine, leave an interval of at least 2 hours before taking ALAXA.
ALAXA with food
Avoid taking ALAXA at the same time as milk and its derivatives, as these
substances may alter the effect of the medicine. Wait at least one hour before
taking ALAXA.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
with breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this
medicine.
Use the medicine only if necessary and under the direct control of the doctor.
Driving and operating machinery
This medicine does not impair the ability to drive vehicles or operate machinery. However,
those who perform an activity requiring vigilance should use caution.
ALAXA contains lactose, sucrose and sodium:
lactose: if your doctor has diagnosed you with intolerance to certain sugars, contact him
before taking this medicine.

sodium: this medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) of sodium per dose, i.e.
essentially ‘sodium-free’.
3. How to take ALAXA
Take this medicine following exactly as indicated in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than 7 days; use for longer periods requires a doctor's prescription.
The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce an easy evacuation of soft stools. It is advisable to initially use the minimum doses provided.
The recommended dose in adults and children over 12 years of age is 2 tablets per day. In particularly stubborn cases, this dose may be increased to 3 tablets per day.
Use in children aged between 3 and 12 years
1-2 tablets per day (0.3 mg per each kg of body weight).
Use ALAXA only after consulting your doctor.
Method of administration
Take ALAXA orally (by mouth), the tablets should be swallowed whole with a large glass of water and preferably after the evening meal, as the laxative effect occurs after 10-12 hours. If you take ALAXA on an empty stomach, the laxative effect occurs within 5 hours.
If you use more ALAXA than you should
Excessive doses can cause stomach pain and diarrhea with fluid loss. These losses must be replenished by drinking water or other fluids. You may also notice muscle weakness and weight loss.
In case of accidental ingestion/intake of an excessive dose of ALAXA, immediately inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital as appropriate measures (e.g. gastric lavage) may be necessary.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Usually, the side effects due to ALAXA affect the stomach and intestines
(gastrointestinal). In particular, the medicine can cause abdominal pain (such as
cramps, isolated or spread throughout the abdomen).

5. How to store ALAXA
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Store at a temperature below 25°C.
Store in the original package, to protect the medicine from moisture.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is reported on the packaging. The expiry
date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist
how to eliminate medicines that you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What ALAXA contains
The active ingredient is: bisacodyl.
1 ALAXA tablet contains 5 mg of bisacodyl.
The other ingredients are: lactose monohydrate, corn starch, magnesium stearate, gelatin,
diethyl phthalate, cellulose acetophthalate, talc, acacia, sucrose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose,
macrogol 6000, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate.
