1. What LIDOFAST is and what it is used for
LIDOFAST is a medicine that contains lidocaine, an active ingredient belonging to the group of
local anaesthetics of the amide type, which works by reducing pain.
LIDOFAST is used for some medical procedures that require the use of special instruments (such
as catheters, endoscopes or dilators), as it reduces sensitivity to pain and, being a
lubricant, facilitates the performance of the procedures. In particular:
- LIDOFAST 10 mg/g gel is used in endoscopic examinations, such as gastroscopy or bronchoscopy. These examinations are performed using an instrument equipped with a camera (endoscope) which is inserted inside the body and allows to diagnose or treat diseases;
- LIDOFAST 25 mg/g urethral gel is used to facilitate procedures that occur through the urethra, such as the insertion of a catheter or a cystoscopy.
2. What you need to know before using LIDOFAST
Do not use LIDOFAST:
- if you are allergic to the active ingredient or to other substances closely related from a chemical point of view, such as other local anesthetic agents of the amide type;
- if you are allergic to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless specifically indicated by your doctor (see “Pregnancy and breastfeeding”).
Warnings and precautions
Tell your doctor if:
- you have or have recently had a trauma or inflammation in the area to be treated;
- you have recently had a severe blood infection (sepsis). In these cases, excessive absorption of the medicine may occur with resulting undesirable effects on the central nervous system and cardiovascular system, especially in children, the elderly or debilitated people.
Other medicines and LIDOFAST
Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other
medicine, as some medicines can interact with LIDOFAST or increase the risk of
serious adverse events.
In particular, tell your doctor if you are taking:
- propanolol, a medicine for heart disease;
- cimetidine, a medicine used to reduce stomach acidity.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
LIDOFAST during pregnancy should only be used in cases of actual necessity as advised
by your doctor.
Lidocaine passes into breast milk: if you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor who
will assess whether to use this medicine.
Driving and operating machinery
LIDOFAST does not impair the ability to drive vehicles or operate machinery.
LIDOFASTcontains:
- methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoatewhich may cause allergic reactions (including delayed reactions).
LIDOFAST 25 mg/g urethral gel also contains:
- sodium benzoate:This medicine contains 5.6 mg of sodium benzoate per tube (15 g) equivalent to 5.6 mg/15 g. Sodium benzoate may cause local irritation. Sodium benzoate may increase jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) in newborns (up to 4 weeks of age).
LIDOFAST 10 mg/g gel also contains:
- sodium benzoate:This medicine contains 1.125 mg of sodium benzoate per dose (3 g) equivalent to 1.125 mg/3 g. Sodium benzoate may cause local irritation. Sodium benzoate may increase jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) in newborns (up to 4 weeks of age).

If you are given too much LIDOFAST
It is unlikely that excessive doses of LIDOFAST will be used, as this medicine is administered by medical personnel and healthcare professionals. If this should happen, you may experience:
tremors and convulsions, depression, breathing problems, coma, heart problems with
decreased blood pressure and decreased heart rate. In such a case, contact
your doctor or nurse immediately.
4. Possible side effects

Inform your doctor if, while using LIDOFAST, you notice:
- allergic reactions at the site where the medicine was applied, manifesting as pain, burning or itching (possible sensitization phenomena);

The following information is intended exclusively for doctors or healthcare professionals. For more
details, please refer to the Summary of Product Characteristics.
The efficacy and safety of lidocaine depend on correct dosage and application technique.
Therefore, the minimum amount of the preparation sufficient to achieve the desired effect should be used,
applying it with caution in subjects with severely damaged mucous membranes or sites of inflammatory
processes and sepsis, which could cause excessive absorption of the active ingredient.
Excessive absorption of lidocaine can cause side effects on the central nervous system and the
cardiovascular system, especially in children, the elderly and debilitated subjects.
Therefore, great care must be taken when using LIDOFAST in these subjects.
Application for very prolonged periods should still be avoided.
Topical products, especially if used for a prolonged or repeated period, can cause sensitization.
In such cases, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.
THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS
LIDOFAST 25 mg/g urethral gel
Endourethral procedures (introduction of catheters, dilations, cystoscopies, etc.) combining a lubricating
action with an anesthetic action.
LIDOFAST 10 mg/g gel
Esophagoscopic and curare-induced intubations, tracheobronchoscopies, pharyngoscopies, gastroscopies,
rectoscopies and all endoscopic investigations of an exploratory and therapeutic nature. The product,
combining a lubricating action with an anesthetic action, allows avoiding spastic reactions and reflexes
starting from the mucous membranes with which the instruments come into contact during endoscopic
procedures.
DOSAGE
LIDOFAST 25 mg/g urethral gel
Push the gel directly into the urethra by squeezing the tube and massaging the posterior urethra at the same
time, applying a urethral clamp for 10 minutes, after which the desired endourethral procedures can be
performed. The contents of the tube are sufficient to completely fill the urethra.
The introduction of the gel into the urethra is facilitated by the use of the attached plastic applicator.
LIDOFAST 10 mg/g gel
Spread a layer of product carefully onto the instrument before inserting it.
INCOMPATIBILITIES
The neutrality of the vehicle of both formulations of the product, its complete solubility in
water and the absence of fatty substances mean that, even with continued use of LIDOFAST, the lenses of
instruments used for various types of procedures are not fogged up and their rubber parts are not
deteriorated.
Lidocaine hydrochloride causes precipitation of amphotericin B. In solution, lidocaine
hydrochloride (2g/l) forms a precipitate when mixed with sodium methoxite (2 g/l) and a crystalline
precipitate with sodium sulfadiazine (4 g/l).
