1. What is Fertifol and what is it used for
Folic acid is a vitamin that is needed for the renewal of body cells. You need a regular supply of folic acid to stay healthy.
In particular, women who are planning a pregnancy and pregnant women need an adequate supply of folic acid for the development of the baby.
Fertifol is useful in the prevention of neural tube defects such as Spina Bifida (a rare malformation of the caudal part of the spinal column that can lead to herniation of the spinal cord, fecal and urinary incontinence, and movement and sensitivity deficits in the lower limbs).
2. What you need to know before taking Fertifol
Do not take Fertifol
- if you are allergic to folic acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- if you have cancer
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Fertifol
- if you are a woman who has previously had pregnancies (completed or not) in which neural tube defects have already been observed;
- if you are being treated with antiepileptic drugs: phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, carbamazepine or valproic acid;
- if you are a woman with a family history of neural tube defects;
- if you are being treated with folic acid antagonists (methotrexate, sulfasalazine);
- if you suffer from pernicious anemia. In fact, folic acid may make the diagnosis of pernicious anemia more difficult by reducing the hematological manifestations of this disease, but it cannot counteract the progression of its neurological complications
In all these cases you may need to take a higher dose of folic acid than that contained in one
Fertifol tablet.
Other medicines and Fertifol
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any of the
following medicines: antiepileptics, folic acid antagonists (methotrexate, sulfasalazine),
oral contraceptives, anti-tuberculosis drugs, or any other medicine.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you may be pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding,
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Folic acid is excreted in breast milk.
Driving and using machines
There is no data available on the effects of the product on the ability to drive.
Fertifol contains lactose
If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, contact them before taking Fertifol.
Fertifol contains sodium
This medicine contains less than mmol (23 mg) of sodium per tablet, i.e. essentially ‘sodium-free’.
3. How to take Fertifol
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. If you
have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is 1 tablet a day from the time pregnancy is planned until the 12th
week of gestation.
The tablet should be taken regularly before meals.
This dose is not adequate if you have previously had pregnancies in which neural tube defects have already
been observed.
The daily dose may be doubled in cases of inadequate folate intake.
FERTIFOL is not effective in preventing the occurrence of neural tube defects if the
treatment is started after the fourth week of pregnancy.
If you take more Fertifol than you should
Even very high doses than those contained in Fertifol should not cause harm to your health.
Doses of folic acid up to 4-5 mg are well tolerated. At higher dosages, the following have been observed:
mental alterations, sleep disturbances and gastrointestinal disorders.
In case of accidental ingestion/intake of an excessive dose of FERTIFOL, immediately notify
your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The most common side effects, which however occur rarely (appear in more than 1
patient out of 10,000 but in less than 1 out of 1000), are allergic reactions: erythema, itching and urticaria.
Frequency not known: (frequency cannot be estimated based on available data): severe allergic
reaction (anaphylactic reaction).
At doses higher than those contained in Fertifol, gastrointestinal disorders may occur
(nausea, abdominal discomfort, flatulence), irritability and insomnia.
