Acido Folico Aristo 5 mg compresse
Read this leaflet carefully before you start taking this medicine as it contains important information for you.

1. What is Acido Folico Aristo and what is it used for
Acido Folico Aristo contains folic acid. Folic acid belongs to a class of medicines called
vitamin B vitamins which are necessary for normal blood formation.
Acido Folico Aristo must be used exclusively for:
The treatment of:
- states of folic acid deficiency (e.g. anemia caused by folic acid deficiency) confirmed by blood tests including the test of vitamin B12 levels for adults, children (from 6 years of age) and adolescents.
The prevention of:
- folic acid deficiency in patients who are taking medications that decrease folic acid levels in the blood (see section 2)
- neural tube defects in the fetus (such as spina bifida, a defect of the spinal cord at birth) for women who are planning a pregnancy and who are at risk of having an affected child.
2. What you need to know before taking Acido Folico Aristo
Do not takeAcido Folico Aristo
- if you are allergic to folic acid or any of the excipients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Acido Folico Aristo:
- if you have a vitamin B deficiency or anemia of unknown cause.
- if you have a malignant disease or cancer.
- if you are a healthy pregnant woman with no risk of having a baby with neural tube defects. In this case, your doctor will prescribe you a medicine with a lower amount of folic acid.
Children
Acido Folico Aristo should not be used in children under 6 years of age.
Other medicines and Acido Folico Aristo
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take
any other medicine.
The following medicines can affect the treatment or can be affected by the treatment
with Acido Folico Aristo:
- Phenytoin, phenobarbital primidone and plausibly carbamazepine (used to control epileptic seizures)
- Fluorouracil, glucarpidase, methotrexate, capecitabine (used for the treatment of some cancers)
- Some antibiotics, for example trimethoprim, sulfonamides
- Sulfasalazine (used to treat inflammatory bowel conditions, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease)
- Pyrimethamine (used to treat toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by a parasite)
- Triamterene (used to treat hypertension and edema or fluid retention in the body)
- Medicines against tuberculosis
- Oral contraceptives
- Alcohol
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
This medicine can be used during pregnancy.
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
Driving and operating machinery
Acido Folico Aristo does not impair the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
Acido Folico Aristo contains lactose and sucrose
If your doctor has diagnosed you with intolerance to some sugars, contact him before taking
this medicine.
3. How to take Acido Folico Aristo
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor.
Treatment for folic acid deficiency
Adults
The recommended dose is 5 mg per day for 3-4 months and may be increased.
Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dose.
Use in children and adolescents:
Acido Folico Aristo should not be used in children under 6 years of age.
For the treatment of folic acid deficiency anemia: The recommended dose is 5 mg per day for 4
months.
Elderly patients and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
Your doctor will prescribe the same dose as a healthy adult patient.
Prevention of folic acid deficiency induced by medicines (see section 2)
The doctor will prescribe an adequate dose.
The recommended dose is 1-5 mg per day or 5 mg once a week.
In case of methotrexate therapy, the dose should be taken 24 hours after taking
methotrexate.
Prevention of neural tube defects in unborn babies in women known to be at
risk
The doctor will prescribe an adequate dose.
The recommended dose is 5 mg per day starting at least 4 weeks before conception until
at least 12 weeks after.
Route of administration and method of administration
Oral use.
The tablet can be taken independently of meals with plenty of liquid.
The tablet can be divided into equal doses.
Duration of treatment
The duration of treatment depends on the cause of folic acid deficiency and the success of the
treatment.
The effect of the treatment must be monitored by a doctor.
If you take more Acido Folico Aristo than you should
In general, if you take more medicine than you should or if a child has taken this medicine
by mistake it is unlikely that this medicine can cause harm, so no medical intervention is necessary. If you are worried, contact your doctor or the nearest hospital for
advice.
If you forget to take Acido Folico Aristo
If you forget to take a tablet, do so as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time
to take the next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten tablet.
If you have any questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
It is unlikely that Acido Folico Aristo will cause side effects, unless you are allergic
to folic acid or to any of the other excipients contained in the tablets.
The following side effects have been reported:
Rare(may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people) :
- Mild allergic reaction
- Anorexia (eating disorder: loss of appetite), nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence (passage of gas)
- Skin rash, itching, urticaria, redness of the skin, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat (facial angioedema)
Not known(frequency cannot be estimated from available data):
severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction that can cause difficulty breathing).

If you get any side effects, even those not listed in this leaflet, tell your
doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly through the national

this medicine.
5. How to store Acido Folico Aristo
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pack after Exp. The expiry date
refers to the last day of that month.
Store in the original packaging to protect the medicine from light.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist
how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What Acido Folico Aristo contains
- The active ingredient is Folic Acid. Each film-coated tablet contains 5 mg of Folic Acid as folic acid hydrate
- The other ingredients are lactose monohydrate, pregelatinized starch, macrogol, sucrose, stearic acid (E 570) and magnesium stearate.
Description of the appearance of Acido Folico Aristo and contents of the pack
Acido Folico Aristo tablets are yellow or mottled yellow-orange, round, biconvex with
a breaking notch on one side with a diameter of approximately 7.0 mm and a thickness of approximately 2.75 mm.
Acido Folico Aristo is available in packs of 20, 28, 50, 60, 100 and 120 tablets.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
