1. What is Acido Folico SF and what is it used for
Folic acid is part of a group of medicines called vitamin B
Acido Folico SF can be used for:
Treatment of:
- anemia including those caused by poor diet, poor food absorption as in the case of celiac disease, folic acid deficiency, during childhood or pregnancy.
Prevention of:
- folic acid deficiency in patients taking medicines to treat epilepsy
- neural tube defects in the fetus (such as spina bifida), for women who are planning a pregnancy who are at risk of having a baby affected by this defect.
2. What you need to know before taking Acido Folico SF
Do not take Acido Folico SF
- if you are allergic to folic acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6). An allergic reaction may include rash
skin, itching, difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, throat or
tongue;
- if you have been diagnosed with anemia due to unknown causes.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Acido Folico SF
- if you have a malignant disease or a tumor.
- if you suffer from vitamin B deficiency. Patients with vitamin B deficiency should not be treated with folic acid unless adequate amounts of hydroxocobalamin are administered.
Children
Acido Folico SF should not be used in children under 6 years of age because the
tablets are not a suitable dosage form for children under 6 years of age. For

Other medicines and Acido Folico SF
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might
take
any other medicine.
This is particularly relevant for the following medicines:
- medicines to treat seizures such as phenytoin, phenobarbital and primidone
- chloramphenicol and cotrimoxazole used to treat infections
- sulfasalazine used to treat ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or rheumatoid arthritis.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you may be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you
are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this
medicine.
This medicine is not intended for use in healthy pregnant women for whom
lower doses are recommended, but for pregnant women with folic acid deficiency or
women at risk of recurrence of neural tube defects.
Driving and operating machinery
Acido Folico SF does not or negligibly alters the ability to drive vehicles and
operate machinery.
Acido Folico SF contains lactose
If your doctor has diagnosed you with intolerance to certain sugars, contact him before
taking this medicine.
3. How to take Acido Folico SF
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Oral use:
- Swallow the tablet whole with water, at the same time each day
- Take this medicine for the time indicated by your doctor
The recommended dose is:
Adults (including elderly patients)
To treat anemia caused by folic acid deficiency and to prevent folic acid deficiency caused by certain medicines: 5 mg per day for 4 months, the dose may be increased to 15 mg per day.
To prevent neural tube defects in the fetus of women who are planning a pregnancy and for whom the risk is known: 5 mg per day starting at least 3 months before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy.
To treat established folic acid deficiency in pregnancy: 5 mg per day until delivery.
Use in children and adolescents
Acido Folico SF should not be used in children under 6 years of age because the tablets are not a suitable dosage form for children under 6 years of age.
To treat anemia caused by folic acid deficiency:
Children and adolescents from 6 to 18 years: 5 mg per day for 4 months; maintenance therapy 5 mg per day every 1-7 days.
To treat anemia or absorption disorders:
Children from 6 to 12 years: 5 mg once a day.
Children and adolescents from 12 to 18 years: 5-10 mg once a day.
If you take more Acido Folico SF than you should
If you (or someone else) swallow many tablets together, or if you think a child has swallowed any tablets, contact the nearest hospital emergency room or your doctor immediately
If you forget to take Acido Folico SF
If you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time to take the next tablet. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet. Take the remaining doses at the correct time.

4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects have been reported as rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
- An allergic reaction: skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. This is a very serious side effect. It may require urgent medical attention or hospitalisation. If this happens, stop taking Acido Folico SF and immediately inform your doctor or contact the nearest hospital emergency room.
- Stomach problems: nausea, loss of appetite, feeling of fullness and flatulence.
The following side effects have been reported with unknown frequency:
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction)

5. How to store Acido Folico SF
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and
on the label. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not store at a temperature above 25°C.
Store in the original package to protect the medicine from light.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist
how
to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What Acido Folico SF contains
- The active ingredient is anhydrous folic acid 5mg.
- The other ingredients are: corn starch, lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, anhydrous colloidal silica, magnesium stearate.

Tablet.
Non-coated tablets of yellow colour, circular, biconvex, diameter 5.5 mm,
marked with the letters “FO” on one side

Blisters: 20, 28, 60 and 120 tablets
