1. What CEFACLOR EG is and what it is used for
CEFACLOR EG contains the active substance cefaclor, which belongs to a group of medicines called
cephalosporins. Cephalosporins are antibiotics and are used to treat infections caused by bacteria.
CEFACLOR EG is indicated for the treatment of:
- infections of the bronchi (bronchitis, including exacerbations of chronic bronchitis), the throat (pharyngitis), the tonsils (tonsillitis);
- skin and soft tissue infections;
- uncomplicated urinary tract infections.
2. What you need to know before taking CEFACLOR EG
Do not take CEFACLOR EG
- if you are allergic to cefaclor, cephalosporins, other similar antibiotics (such as penicillins) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking CEFACLOR EG.
Tell your doctor if you or someone in your family has suffered from allergic reactions after
taking medicines containing cefaclor or other similar medicines (cephalosporins, penicillins), as this
medicine may cause allergic reactions (at the level of the skin, gastrointestinal tract,
respiratory system, heart and circulatory system) even severe ones such as anaphylactic shock.
The doctor will carefully assess whether it is appropriate to prescribe this medicine and may
take useful precautions to prevent unwanted reactions.
If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, stop taking this medicine
and contact a doctor immediately.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:
- severe and sudden drop in blood pressure (hypotension);
- acceleration and slowing of the heartbeat;
- unusual feeling of fatigue or weakness;
- anxiety, agitation;
- dizziness;
- fainting (loss of consciousness);
- difficulty breathing or swallowing;
- generalized itching, especially on hands and feet;
- skin irritation (urticaria) with or without swelling of the extremities, external genitalia, face especially in the region of the eyes and lips (angioedema);
- redness of the skin, especially around the ears;
- bluish discoloration of the skin (cyanosis);
- profuse sweating,
- nausea, vomiting;
- stomach pain (abdominal cramps);
- diarrhea.
Tell your doctor if:
- during treatment with this medicine you experience episodes of diarrhea, as this may indicate the onset of an intestinal problem (pseudomembranous colitis); tell your doctor if you have previously suffered from intestinal disorders as you are more likely to develop this type of intestinal disorders associated with antibiotics;
- you have kidney problems, because your doctor may need to reduce the dose;
- you need to have blood or urine tests, because these tests may give false results.
Children
There is no data to establish the safety of CEFACLOR EG in children.
Other medicines and CEFACLOR EG
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicines.
Tell your doctor if you are taking a medicine called probenecid (used to treat gout), because
your doctor may need to adjust the dose of CEFACLOR EG, or medicines used for the treatment of
stomach problems (antacids containing aluminum hydroxide or magnesium).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, your doctor will prescribe CEFACLOR EG only if
absolutely necessary and under his direct supervision.
Driving and using machines
This medicine does not impair the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
CEFACLOR EG contains propylene glycol (E1520)
This medicine contains 0.688 mg of propylene glycol per tablet.
3. How to take CEFACLOR EG
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. If you have
any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Take the tablets whole without chewing, do not crush them before taking them. You can take
CEFACLOR EG independently of meals.
Use in adults
The recommended dose is 1 tablet 2 times a day.
In infections caused by a particular type of bacteria ( S. pyogenes) it is recommended to continue the
treatment for up to 10 days.
If you take more CEFACLOR EG than you should
In case of overdose, the following symptoms may occur: nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and
diarrhea.
If you accidentally take an excessive dose of CEFACLOR EG, inform your doctor immediately or go to the nearest
hospital.
If you forget to take CEFACLOR EG
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Common(may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
- increased levels of white blood cells (eosinophilia);
- allergic reactions (hypersensitivity) characterized by skin lesions similar to those of measles (morbilliform rashes);
- diarrhoea;
- swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat due to fluid accumulation (angioedema);
- alterations in liver function with increased levels of enzymes produced by the liver (SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase).
Uncommon(may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
- itching, skin irritation (urticaria);
- alteration of the results of some blood tests (positive Coombs test);
- itching of the genitals, vaginal infection caused by a fungus (vaginal candidiasis), inflammation of the vagina;
- alterations in kidney function with increased amounts of certain substances in the blood (azotemia and creatinineemia) and alterations in urine tests.
Frequency not known(frequency cannot be estimated from available data)
- generalised allergic reactions (serum sickness-like diseases), which occur especially in children and are characterised by various skin lesions (erythema multiforme, skin rash), joint inflammation and pain (arthritis, arthralgia), with or without fever;
- severe skin disorders characterised by the appearance of lesions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis) and severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) that is life-threatening;
- nausea and vomiting;
- inflammation of the intestine (pseudomembranous colitis) which may occur during and after treatment;
- with some penicillins and other cephalosporins, inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), yellowing of the skin due to an excessive amount of a substance called bilirubin in the blood (cholestatic jaundice) are rarely observed;
- kidney problems (reversible interstitial nephritis);
- alteration of the number of white blood cells (transient lymphocytosis, agranulocytosis, reversible neutropenia, leucopenia), decrease in the levels of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia); reduction in the number of all blood cells (aplastic anemia);
- decrease in the levels of platelets (thrombocytopenia);
- problems with blood coagulation (increased prothrombin time) with or without bleeding in patients taking medicines to thin the blood (e.g. warfarin);
- hyperactivity, restlessness, sleep disorders (insomnia), mental confusion, involuntary muscle contractions (hypertonia), hallucinations (seeing and hearing things that do not exist), feeling of instability and dizziness, drowsiness;
- anaphylactoid reactions, including angioedema, asthenia, edema (both facial and of the limbs), dyspnea, paraesthesia, syncope and vasodilation (following the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics).

5. How to store CEFACLOR EG
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the packaging after “Exp.”.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C.
Do not dispose of any medicine in waste water or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to
dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.

What CEFACLOR EG contains
- The active ingredient is cefaclor. Each tablet contains 750 mg of cefaclor;
- The other ingredients are: hypromellose, mannitol (E421), povidone, magnesium stearate, colloidal silicon dioxide, propylene glycol (E1520), titanium dioxide.
