- This medicine has been prescribed for you personally. Never give it to others. In fact, for other individuals this medicine could be dangerous, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.

1. WHAT IS CARTEABAK AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR
This medicine is a beta-blocker administered via the ocular route.
It is used for the treatment of certain types of eye diseases concerning ocular hypertension (glaucoma and
ocular hypertension).
- 1)BEFORE USING CARTEABAK
Do not use CARTEABAK eye drops, solution
- if you are allergic(hypersensitive) to carteolol hydrochloride, to beta-blockers or to any of the excipients.
- if you have or have had in the past respiratory problems such as asthma, severe obstructive chronic bronchitis(severe lung disease that can cause shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and/orlong-lasting cough).
- if you have a slow heartbeat, heart failure or heart rhythm disorders (irregular heartbeats).
- in case ofuntreated pheochromocytoma (excessive production of a hormone that causes severe high blood pressure).
- in case of therapy with floctafenine (medicine used to treat pain).
- in case of therapy with sultopride (medicine mostly used for psychiatric therapy).
Take special care with CARTEABAK
- Do not suddenly stop the therapy without your doctor's advice.
- Do not inject, do not swallow.If you use CARTEABAK, you must undergo regular eye checks, particularly to check that there is no resistance to the drug (the medicine becomes less effective during long-term treatment). Before using this medicine, tell your doctor if you have or have had in the past:
- coronary heart disease (symptoms may include chest pain or a feeling of tightness, shortness of breath or suffocation), heart failure, low blood pressure
- heart rate disorders, such as slow heartbeat,
- respiratory problems, asthma or chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathy (lung disease that can cause shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and/or long-lasting cough),
- disease due to poor blood circulation (such as Raynaud's disease or Raynaud's syndrome)
- diabetes, because Carteolol can mask the signs and symptoms due to a low blood sugar level,
- hyperactivity of the thyroid gland, because Carteolol can mask its signs and symptoms.
- treated pheochromocytoma,
- psoriasis,
- corneal diseases.
Precautions for the use of contact lenses
- Avoid using contact lenses during treatment as fewer tears are secreted, this effect is generally related to beta-blockers.
Before undergoing an operation, inform your doctor that you are taking Carteabak, as carteolol
can modify the effects of some medicines used during anesthesia.
Use of CARTEABAK with other medicines
- If your doctor has prescribed another type of eye drops, you must wait 15 minutes between the instillation of thetwo eye drops. Carteabak can influence or be influenced by other medicines you are using, including other eye drops for the treatment of glaucoma. Tell your doctor if you are using or intend to use medicines to lower blood pressure, medicines for the heart or medicines to treat diabetes. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicine, in particular floctafenine and sultopride, including those without a prescription.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not use Carteabak if you are pregnant unless your doctor deems it necessary.
Do not use Carteabak if you are breastfeeding. Carteolol can be excreted in breast milk.
Ask your doctor for advice before taking any medicine during breastfeeding.
Driving and using machines
You may experience transient visual impairment after ocular administration of this medicine. Wait until
normal vision returns before driving or using machines. CARTEABAK can also cause
other undesirable effects (dizziness, fatigue) likely to affect the ability to drive vehicles
or use machines. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor.
Sport
The active ingredient of this medicine can determine positivity to doping tests.
- 2)HOW TO USE CARTEABAKAlways use CARTEABAK eye drops, solution exactly as your doctor has instructed. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Dosage
- AdultsThe usual dose is one drop in the affected eye twice a day (morning and evening).
- ChildrenThere is no experience in premature babies, newborns and children. The use of this eye drops is therefore not recommended in these patients.
- Elderly patientsNo dosage adjustment is necessary, follow the adult dosage. Method of administration This medicine is intended to be administered into the eye (ophthalmic use). Wash your hands thoroughly before using the product. Avoid contact of the container tip with the eye or eyelids. Instill one drop into the affected eye, looking upwards and lowering the lower eyelid slightly. After using Carteabak, press a finger on the corner of the eye, near the nose for 2 minutes. This helps to prevent carteolol from spreading throughout the body.
- 5. Close the bottle after use.
Frequency of administration2 administrations a day (morning and evening).
Duration of therapy
Always use CARTEABAK following exactly your doctor's instructions.
If you use too much CARTEABAK
If you instill too many drops or if you accidentally swallow the contents of the bottle, you may have, among other effects,
a feeling of dizziness, or you may have difficulty breathing or have a feeling that your heart rate has decreased.
Check immediately with your doctor or pharmacist.
If you forget to use CARTEABAK
Instill the forgotten dose as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, simply skip
the forgotten dose.
If you have any doubts about using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
If you stop taking CARTEABAK
The pressure inside your eye may increase and damage your sight.
Do not suddenly stop the therapy without asking your doctor for advice.
If you have any other questions about the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medicines, CARTEABAK eye drops, solution may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
You can usually continue to use the eye drops unless the effects are severe. If you are
worried, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. Do not stop using Carteabak without talking to your doctor.
As with other medicines applied to the eyes, carteolol is absorbed into the bloodstream. This can cause
side effects similar to those observed with beta-blockers taken intravenously and/or orally.
The incidence of side effects after topical ophthalmic administration is lower than when the
medicines are, for example, taken by mouth or by injection.
The side effects listed include reactions observed within the class of beta-blockers
used to treat eye conditions:
- Allergic systemic reactions including widespread swelling under the skin (which may occur in areas such as the face and limbs, and may obstruct the airways, causing difficulty swallowing or breathing), urticaria (itchy rash), localised and widespread skin rash, itching, life-threatening danger due to sudden allergic reaction.
- Low blood glucose levels
- Sleep disturbances (insomnia), depression, nightmares, memory loss
- Fainting, stroke, reduced blood supply to the brain, worsening of signs and symptoms of myasthenia gravis (muscle disorder), dizziness, unusual sensations (such as tingling) and headache.
- Signs and symptoms of eye irritation (e.g. burning, irritation, itching, tearing, redness), conjunctival redness, conjunctivitis, eyelid inflammation, corneal inflammation, blurred vision and detachment of the layer under the retina containing blood vessels following filtering surgery which may cause visual disturbances, reduced corneal sensitivity, dry eyes, corneal erosion (damage to the front layer of the eyeball), lowering of the upper eyelid (making the eye half-closed), double vision, changes in refraction (due in some cases to discontinuation of miotic therapy).
- Slowing of the heart rate, chest pain, palpitations, edema (fluid retention), changes in the rhythm or rate of the heartbeat, congestive heart failure (heart disease, with shortness of breath and swelling of the feet and legs due to fluid retention), a type of heart rhythm disorder, heart attack, heart failure, leg cramps and/or leg pain when walking (claudication).
- Low blood pressure, Raynaud's phenomenon, cold hands and feet.
- Constriction of the airways in the lungs (predominantly in patients with pre-existing diseases), difficulty breathing, cough.
- Taste disturbances, nausea, indigestion, diarrhoea, dry mouth, abdominal pain, vomiting.
- Hair loss, skin rashes with a silvery-white appearance (psoriasiform rash) or worsening of psoriasis, skin rash.
- Muscle pain not caused by exercise, systemic lupus erythematosus.
- Sexual dysfunction, decreased libido, impotence.
- Muscle weakness/fatigue.
- Positive antinuclear antibody results.

5. HOW TO STORE CARTEABAK
Keep CARTEABAK out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not use CARTEABAK after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and the bottle after EXP. The
expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
The bottle should not be stored for more than eight weeks after first opening.

What CARTEABAK contains
- The active ingredient is carteolol hydrochloride at a concentration of 1% or 2%.
- The excipients are sodium chloride, disodium phosphate dodecahydrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, water for injections.

CARTEABAK is an eye drop, solution presented in a bottle containing 5 or 10 ml of solution. It is a
colourless and transparent liquid.
