1. What is Aciclovir Dorom and what is it used for
Aciclovir Dorom contains aciclovir, a substance with antiviral properties, capable of
counteracting infections caused by some viruses (Herpes).
Aciclovir Dorom is used:
- to treat skin and mucous membrane infections caused by the Herpes Simplexvirus including genital herpes (Herpes genitalis), except in children with severe herpesinfections who have low immune defenses (immunocompromised) and in newborns;
- to treat the recurrence of Herpes simplexinfection in people with normal immune defenses;
- to prevent Herpes simplexinfections in people with low immune defenses (immunocompromised);
- for the treatment of chickenpox and Herpes zoster.
Contact your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse.
2. What you need to know before using Aciclovir Dorom
Do not useAciclovir Dorom:
- if you are allergic to the active ingredient, to valaciclovir or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor considers it strictly necessary.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Aciclovir Dorom.
Take particular care and ask your doctor for advice before taking Aciclovir Dorom
if:
- you are taking medicines that can impair your kidney function, as this may increase the risk of kidney problems. Your doctor will tell you if any of the medicines you are taking have this effect;
- your kidney function is impaired or if you are elderly, as a dose reduction may be necessary. Furthermore, if you belong to one of these categories of patients, your doctor will carefully monitor your health condition, as the risk of side effects on the nervous system increases, such as: headache, dizziness, agitation, confusion, tremor, lack of coordination of voluntary muscle movements (ataxia), speech disorder (dysarthria), hallucinations, psychotic symptoms, convulsions, drowsiness, brain alterations (encephalopathy), coma. These symptoms usually disappear when treatment is stopped;
- your immune defenses are severely compromised, as prolonged or repeated use of this medicine may lead to the development of viruses resistant to therapy, resulting in a loss of aciclovir efficacy.
Taking high doses of aciclovir can cause excessive loss of body fluids;
for this reason, if you are undergoing therapy with high doses of aciclovir, you must take plenty of
water to maintain adequate hydration.
Other medicines and Aciclovir Dorom
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might
take any other medicines.
Take particular care and inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following
medicines:
- probenecid, used mainly for the treatment of gout;
- cimetidine, used to treat lesions of the stomach mucosa (gastric ulcer);
- mycophenolate mofetil, used in patients undergoing transplantation to prevent organ rejection;
- theophylline, used for the treatment of asthma.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are breastfeeding
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, use this medicine only if absolutely necessary and
always under the direct supervision of your doctor, as the use of this medicine is generally
contraindicated during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding
Use aciclovir during breastfeeding only in cases of actual need and under the direct
supervision of your doctor, as the use of this medicine is generally contraindicated
during breastfeeding.
Driving and operating machinery
Aciclovir Dorom may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.
Your doctor will tell you if you can drive or operate machinery, after assessing your clinical
condition and any side effects that may occur during therapy.
Aciclovir Dorom tablets contains lactose:if your doctor has diagnosed you with
an intolerance to certain sugars, contact him/her before taking this medicine.
Aciclovir Dorom oral suspension contains:
- sorbitol:this medicine contains 3.24 g of sorbitol per 10 mL dose. Sorbitol is a source of fructose. If your doctor has told you that you (or your child) are intolerant to certain sugars, or if you have a diagnosis of hereditary fructose intolerance, a rare genetic disease in which patients cannot metabolize fructose, talk to your doctor before you (or your child) take this medicine. If you take a dose greater than 22 ml the medicine may cause gastrointestinal problems and have a mild laxative effect. The caloric value of sorbitol is 2.6 kcal/g;
- methyl parahydroxybenzoate and propyl parahydroxybenzoate:may cause allergic reactions (even delayed);
- sodium: this medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) of sodium per 10 mL dose, i.e. it is essentially “sodium-free”.
3. How to use Aciclovir Dorom
Use this medicine following the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist exactly. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Take Aciclovir Dorom, as directed by your doctor, as soon as you notice the appearance of the first typical symptoms of Herpes (itching, burning sensation or pain) or the first lesions.
Recommended doses in adults

* It is recommended to maintain adequate hydration (drink plenty of fluids).
Duration of treatment:
Therapy with aciclovir must last at least 5 days, but a prolongation of treatment may be necessary in cases of severe primary infections. If recurrences occur despite treatment with Aciclovir Dorom, consult your doctor.
Duration of treatment:
The doctor will indicate the duration of therapy most suitable for your case. Therapy should be interrupted periodically at intervals of 6 or 12 months to assess any changes in the course of the disease.

Therapy must last 7 days.
Elderly patients
If you are an elderly patient and are taking high doses of Aciclovir Dorom, it is recommended to
maintain adequate hydration (drink plenty of fluids). The doctor may modify the dosage of
Aciclovir if you have kidney problems (see the doses relating to “Patients with altered renal function”).
Recommended doses in children
Always follow the doctor's instructions
* for the treatment of neonatal HSV infections, the administration of
aciclovir solution for infusion is recommended (suitable formulations for these
cases are available on the market).

Therapy must last 5 days.
Instructions for use of the oral suspension
Shake the oral suspension before use.
If you use more Aciclovir Dorom than you should
In case of accidental ingestion/intake of an excessive dose of this medicine, immediately notify your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
Accidental ingestion of aciclovir may, in fact, cause the appearance of adverse effects at the gastrointestinal level, such as nausea and vomiting, and effects at the nervous system level, such as headache and confusion.
If you forget to use Aciclovir Dorom
Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
If you stop taking Aciclovir Dorom
Ask your doctor for advice if you intend to stop treatment.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
You must stop treatment and immediately inform your doctorif you experience
skin rashes, itching, hives, difficulty breathing (bronchospasm) or swallowing,
swelling of the face, hands and feet, eyes, lips and/or tongue
(angioedema), as these may be symptoms of allergic reactions, even serious ones, which occur
rarely.
Other side effects may be:
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
- headache;
- dizziness;
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- diarrhoea;
- abdominal pain;
- itching;
- skin rashes;
- immune system reaction to sunlight manifesting as a skin rash accompanied by itching (photosensitivity reaction);
- fatigue;
- fever.
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
- hives;
- rapid and widespread hair loss (alopecia).
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
- difficulty breathing (dyspnoea);
- reversible increase in bilirubin and liver enzymes;
- increased levels of nitrogen and creatinine in the blood;
- anaphylactic reaction;
- angioedema
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
- excessive decrease in red blood cells (anaemia);
- reduction in white blood cells (leucopenia);
- reduction in the number of blood cells called platelets (thrombocytopenia);
- agitation;
- confusional state;
- tremor;
- lack of coordination of voluntary muscle movements, caused by damage to the nervous system (ataxia);
- speech disorder, resulting from damage to the nervous system (dysarthria);
- hallucinations;
- psychotic symptoms;
- convulsions;
- drowsiness;
- brain alterations (encephalopathy);
- liver inflammation (hepatitis);
- yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes (jaundice);
- impaired kidney function (acute traumatic kidney injury);
- kidney pain, even associated with kidney failure;
- coma

5. How to store Aciclovir Dorom
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Aciclovir Dorom tablets
This medicine does not require any special storage conditions.
Aciclovir Dorom oral suspension
Store at a temperature below 25°C.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pack after
“Expiry”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist
how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.

What Aciclovir Dorom contains
Aciclovir Dorom 400 mg tablets
- The active ingredient is aciclovir. One tablet contains 400 mg of aciclovir.
- The other ingredients are: lactose monohydrate, corn starch, crospovidone, magnesium stearate.
Aciclovir Dorom 800 mg tablets
- The active ingredient is aciclovir. One tablet contains 800 mg of aciclovir.
- The other ingredients are: lactose monohydrate, corn starch, crospovidone, magnesium stearate.
Aciclovir Dorom 400 mg/5 ml oral suspension
- The active ingredient is aciclovir. 100 ml of oral suspension contains 8 g of aciclovir.
- The other ingredients are: non-crystallizing liquid sorbitol, glycerol, dispersible cellulose, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, orange flavour, purified water.

Aciclovir Dorom 400 mg tablets are presented in a box containing 25 tablets in
blisters.
Aciclovir Dorom 800 mg tablets are presented in a box containing 35 tablets in

It is possible that, following use, especially if prolonged, sensitization phenomena may occur, i.e. allergic reactions to the drug or to other structurally similar medicines. You must stop treatment and immediately inform your doctorif you experience skin rashes, itching, difficulty breathing (bronchospasm) or swallowing, swelling of the face, hands and feet, eyes, lips and/or tongue (angioedema), as these may be symptoms of even serious allergic reactions.
Take particular care and seek advice from your doctor before taking Aciclovir Dorom if you suffer from diseases that have weakened your immune system (for example if you have AIDS or have undergone a bone marrow transplant) because in this case you are more susceptible to infections and your doctor may prefer to prescribe aciclovir orally.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility

Aciclovir Dorom 5% cream does not alter or alters negligibly the ability to drive vehicles or operate machinery.
Aciclovir Dorom contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate, sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate:these may cause allergic reactions (even delayed).
3. How to use Aciclovir Dorom
Use this medicine following exactly as described in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is 5 applications per day at intervals of approximately 4 hours.
Therapy with aciclovir must last at least 4 days for lip herpes and at least 5 days for genital herpes; if the infection has not healed, your doctor may advise continuing treatment for another 5 days, without exceeding 10 days of treatment.
Apply Aciclovir Dorom cream to the lesions, to the areas where they are developing or as soon as you notice the appearance of the first typical symptoms of Herpes (itching, burning sensation or pain).
If you use more Aciclovir Dorom than you should
Accidental ingestion of the contents of this medicine does not cause serious adverse effects, but may cause irritation to the mucous membranes of the mouth.
In case of accidental ingestion, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
If you forget to use Aciclovir Dorom
Start applying the cream as soon as you remember, always following the instructions in this leaflet, or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.
If you stop using Aciclovir Dorom
Ask your doctor for advice if you intend to stop treatment.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
You must stop treatment and immediately inform your doctorif you experience
skin rashes, itching, hives, difficulty breathing (bronchospasm) or swallowing,
swelling of the face, hands and feet, eyes, lips and/or tongue
(angioedema), as these may be symptoms of allergic reactions, even serious ones, which are very
rare.
Other side effects may include:
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
- burning or transient pain;
- dry skin or skin flaking (skin exfoliation);
- itching.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
- skin irritation (erythema);
- contact dermatitis.

continuing treatment for another 5 days, without exceeding 10 days of treatment.
Apply Aciclovir Dorom cream to the lesions, to the areas where they are developing or
as soon as you notice the appearance of the first typical symptoms of Herpes (itching, sensation of
burning or pain).
If you use more Aciclovir Dorom than you should
Accidental ingestion of the contents of this medicine does not cause serious adverse effects, but may cause irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth.
In case of accidental ingestion, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
If you forget to use Aciclovir Dorom
Start applying the cream as soon as you remember, always following the instructions given
in this leaflet, or the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist.
If you stop using Aciclovir Dorom
Ask your doctor for advice if you intend to stop treatment.

4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
You must stop treatment and immediately inform your doctorif you experience
skin rashes, itching, hives, difficulty breathing (bronchospasm) or swallowing,
swelling of the face, hands and feet, eyes, lips and/or tongue
(angioedema), as these could be symptoms of allergic reactions, even serious ones, which are very
rare.
Other side effects may be:
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
- burning or transient pain;
- dry skin or skin flaking (skin exfoliation);
- itching.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
- skin irritation (erythema);
- contact dermatitis.

5. How to store Aciclovir Dorom
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
This medicine does not require any special storage conditions.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack after “Exp.”.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of any medicine in waste water or household waste. Ask your pharmacist
how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.

What Aciclovir Dorom contains
- The active ingredient is aciclovir. 100 g of cream contains 5 g of aciclovir.
- The other ingredients are: Tefose 1500, glycerol, liquid paraffin, stearic acid, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, purified water.
