1. What Laxido is and what it is used for
Laxido contains macrogol 3350 and the electrolytes sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate and potassium
chloride.
Macrogol 3350 is a laxative used in the treatment of constipation, especially if you have been constipated
for a long time. It is also used in the treatment of the accumulation of solid stools in the intestine, which
may be a consequence of long-term constipation (this condition is known as
faecal obstruction). Macrogol 3350 softens the stools and facilitates their passage, providing relief
from constipation. The electrolytes help maintain normal levels of sodium, potassium and water
in the body during treatment for constipation.
2. What you need to know before taking Laxido
Do not take Laxido:
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to macrogol 3350, sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate, potassium chloride, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
- if you have a perforation of the intestinal walls
- if you have an intestinal obstruction
- if you have intestinal paralysis (for example, the intestine may stop working due to surgery or a severe intestinal infection)
- if you suffer from ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or toxic megacolon
If any of these problems apply to you, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse for
further advice.
Warnings and precautions
Before taking Laxido for the treatment of faecal impaction, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or
nurse, because before taking this medicine it is necessary to confirm
that you suffer from this condition.
During the intake of Laxido you must continue to take plenty of fluids. The fluid content
of Laxido should not replace the regular intake of fluids.
Other medicines and Laxido
Some medicines, e.g. anti-epileptics, may not work as effectively if
taken at the same time as Laxido. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have
recently taken or might take any other medicines. You should not take any other
oral medicines for one hour before taking Laxido and for one hour after taking it.
Laxido with food and drink
Food and drinks do not affect the effect of Laxido.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Laxido can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, if
you suspect or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding, ask your
doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Driving and using machines
Laxido does not impair the ability to drive vehicles or use machines.
Laxidocontains potassium and sodium
Laxido contains 0.68 mmol (26 mg) of potassium per sachet. This must be taken into
consideration if you take more than one sachet a day and your kidney function is reduced, or if
you are following a diet with a controlled intake of potassium.
This medicine contains 187 mg of sodium (the main component of table salt) per
sachet. This is equivalent to approximately 9% of the maximum recommended daily intake of sodium
with the diet of an adult.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you need three or more sachets a day for a
prolonged period, especially if you have been advised to follow a low-salt diet
(sodium).
3. How to take Laxido
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. Laxido must be taken orally.
Laxido is a laxative for the treatment of constipation and fecal impaction in adults, children (12 years and over) and the elderly.
Constipation
The usual dose for constipation is one sachet taken one to three times a day.
Fecal Impaction
The usual dose for fecal impaction is eight sachets per day. All eight sachets must be taken within a period of six hours. If you have heart problems, do not take more than two sachets (in 250 ml of water) in one hour.
How to prepare
Laxido must be prepared by dissolving the contents of one sachet in a glass of water (125 ml). Mix well until all the powder is dissolved. If you are being treated for fecal impaction, you can dissolve the contents of all eight sachets together in a large container (in one litre of water).
Duration of treatment
Constipation
The treatment period for constipation usually does not last more than 2 weeks.
The duration of treatment may exceed two weeks if you suffer from resistant constipation, or from a disease that causes constipation (such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis), or if you are regularly taking other medicines that can cause constipation. In these cases, your doctor may reduce the dose to one sachet to be taken one or two times a day.
Fecal Impaction
Normally the duration of the treatment cycle for fecal impaction does not exceed 3 days.
If you take more Laxido than you should
Severe abdominal pain and bloating, or vomiting or diarrhoea, may occur, resulting in dehydration. In this case, stop taking Laxido and drink plenty of fluids. If you are concerned, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
If you forget to take Laxido
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember and then continue as before. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
If you stop taking Laxido
To get the maximum benefit from Laxido, always complete the treatment cycle recommended by your doctor or pharmacist. This will ensure the resolution of constipation, otherwise the symptoms you are suffering from may persist.
If your symptoms worsen or do not improve after 14 days in the case of chronic constipation, or after 3 days in the case of fecal impaction, you should contact your doctor.
If you have any further questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking Laxido and see your doctor immediately:
- signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- signs of an allergy, such as skin rash, redness of the skin, hives, itching or shortness of breath
