1. What is Lattulosio Alter and what is it used for?
Lattulosio Alter contains the active ingredient lactulose, a sugar that belongs to a group of
medicines called laxatives, used to facilitate bowel evacuation.
This medicine is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation.
Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.
2. What you need to know before you take Lattulosio Alter
Do not take Lattulosio Alter
- if you are allergic to lactulose or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from galactosemia, a genetic disease that prevents the digestion of galactose;
- if you have an obstruction or narrowing (stenosis) of the intestine;
- if you have abdominal pain of unknown origin, nausea, vomiting;
- if you notice the presence of blood of unknown origin in your stool (rectal bleeding);
- if you are in a state of severe dehydration;
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Lattulosio Alter.
Consult your doctor before taking this medicine in the following cases:
- if you suffer from diabetes, because this medicine may contain other types of sugars (lactose, galactose, tagatose);
- if you are elderly or debilitated;
- if you suffer from a bowel disorder called flatulence (excessive production and accumulation of gas in the intestine). In this case, take the minimum dose at the beginning of treatment; this dose may be gradually increased based on your condition;
- if you suffer from constipation that lasts for long periods (chronic) or that is frequent.
- if the need for a laxative stems from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts for more than two weeks or when the use of the laxative fails to produce effects.
Excessive use of laxatives can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts
and other essential nutrients for the body. In the most severe cases, severe dehydration and
decreased levels of potassium in the blood (hypokalemia) can cause problems with the heart, nerves
and muscles (cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction), especially in case of concomitant use of
medicines used for heart rate problems (cardiac glycosides), medicines used to
lower blood pressure (diuretics) and cortisone anti-inflammatory drugs.
The abuse of laxatives, especially stimulant laxatives (contact laxatives), can cause dependence and
habituation (the need to always increase the dosage), chronic constipation and loss of normal
bowel function (intestinal atony).
Health education notes:Keep in mind that, in most cases, a balanced diet rich in
water and fiber (bran, vegetables and fruit) can solve the problem of constipation. Many people think
they suffer from constipation if they cannot evacuate every day. This is a mistaken belief, as
this situation is perfectly normal for a large number of people.
Instead, consider that constipation occurs when bowel movements are reduced compared to personal habits
and are associated with the passage of hard stools. If episodes of constipation occur repeatedly
you should consult your doctor.
Children
In children under 12 years of age, Lattulosio Alter should be used only after consulting a
doctor.
Other medicines and Lattulosio Alter
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicines.
Avoid taking other medicines at the same time as Lattulosio Alter, as it may reduce the time of
stay in the intestine and therefore the absorption of other medicines administered orally.
In case of concomitant treatments, take the laxative at least 2 hours after taking the medicine.
Pay particular attention and inform your doctor if you are taking the following medicines:
- broad-spectrum antibiotics, used against bacterial infections;
- antacids, used to reduce acidity;
- neomycin, a medicine used against infections;
- digitalis, used for the treatment of heart rate disorders.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, take this medicine only if necessary and always under
direct medical supervision.

If you take more Lattulosio Alter than you should
If you (or someone else) have taken an excessive dose of Lattulosio Alter or if you think a child may
