1. What is DINEZA and what is it used for
DINEZA contains the active ingredient dihydroergotamine, belonging to a group of medicines
called antimigraine drugs that relieve headache symptoms by acting directly on blood circulation
in the brain.
This medicine is indicated in the treatment of headache, recurrent severe headache attacks (migraine) and
dizziness.
2. What you need to know before you take DINEZA
Do not take DINEZA
- if you are allergic to dihydroergotamine methanesulfonate or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from blood circulation problems (peripheral arteriopathies such as obliterating angiopathies, coronary diseases);
- if you suffer from severe liver and kidney problems (hepatic and renal insufficiency);
- if you have a widespread infection in the blood (septic states);
- if you have high blood pressure (hypertension);
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- if you are taking triacetoleandomycin (TAO) or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking DINEZA.
Take this medicine with a full stomach, to avoid stomach discomfort such as nausea and
vomiting (See section “Possible side effects”).
Stop treatment with DINEZA and inform your doctor if you experience tingling in your fingers
of your hands and feet.
Do not exceed the recommended doses and take the medicine for the shortest possible time, because, if
taken for a long time, DINEZA can cause a serious poisoning called ergotism (See
section “If you take more DINEZA than you should”).
Other medicines and DINEZA
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take
any other medicine.
Do not take DINEZA if you are taking the following medicines:
- triacetoleandomycin (TAO), used for the treatment of infections;
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), used for the treatment of depression.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
with breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Do not take DINEZA if you are pregnant and if you are breastfeeding.
Driving and operating machinery
This medicine does not impair the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
DINEZA contains lactose and sucrose
This medicine contains lactose and sucrose, two types of sugars. If your doctor has diagnosed
an intolerance to certain sugars, contact him before taking this medicine.
3. How to take DINEZA
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. If you
have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is 2 capsules per day: 1 capsule in the morning and 1 capsule in the evening, to be taken
during meals.
Do not exceed the recommended doses.
If you take more DINEZA than you should
Following the intake of an excessive dose of this medicine, a serious
intoxication called ergotism may occur, characterized by loss of consciousness, convulsions, lowering
of blood pressure, numbness of the hands and feet (See section “Warnings and
precautions”).
If you accidentally ingest/take an excessive dose of DINEZA, immediately notify
your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
If you forget to take DINEZA
Do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten capsule.
Take only the next dose, at the usual time.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Frequency not known(frequency cannot be estimated from available data):
- nausea and vomiting, if you take this medicine on an empty stomach;
- sensation of tingling (paresthesia), pain, weakness in the arms and legs (limb weakness) and reduced blood circulation in the hands and feet (peripheral vasoconstriction).

If you get any side effects, even those not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly through the

avverse. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the
safety of this medicine.
5. How to store DINEZA
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the packaging after “Exp.”.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
This medicine does not require any particular storage conditions.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to
dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What DINEZA contains
- The active ingredient is dihydroergotamine methanesulfonate. Each capsule contains: o 1.5 mg of dihydroergotamine methanesulfonate for immediate release; o 3.5 mg of dihydroergotamine methanesulfonate for programmed release.
- The other ingredients are: o internal: sucrose, polyvinylpyrrolidone, starch, lactose, talc, methacrylic polymers, diethyl phthalate; o outer shell: gelatin; indigotine (E132).
