1. What is CALCIODIE and what is it used for
CALCIODIE contains the active ingredient calcium carbonate, which is a calcium salt, a fundamental element
for bones and many functions of the human body.
The use of calcium salts is useful in those physiological conditions, or due to diseases, in which the intake of
calcium with food is insufficient or inadequate.
CALCIODIE is indicated:
- for the prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency;
- for those pathological conditions in which an increased intake of calcium is required.
2. What you need to know before taking CALCIODIE
Do not take CALCIODIE
- if you are allergic to calcium carbonate, to similar substances or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you have high levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia) and high levels of calcium in the urine (hypercalciuria), for example in case of increased parathyroid function (a gland located in the neck), vitamin D overdose, tumors such as plasmocytoma or multiple myeloma and bone metastases;
- if you suffer from kidney stones (calcium lithiasis);
- if you have severe kidney problems (severe renal insufficiency);
- if you have been immobilised for a long time and have high levels of calcium in the blood and/or urine; in this case, treatment with the medicine must only be started when you resume movement.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking CALCIODIE.
If you have heart disease or if you suffer from kidney problems (renal insufficiency), take this medicine with
caution and only when necessary. In fact, particularly in case of renal insufficiency, this
medicine at high doses and for prolonged treatments can cause increased calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia).
In case of prolonged treatments, it is necessary to periodically check the levels of calcium in the blood
(calcemia) and in the urine (calciuria) and possibly reduce the dose of CALCIODIE.
Other medicines and CALCIODIE
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicines, to avoid any interactions (reciprocal influences between medicines with resulting
changes in their effects).
Do not take this medicine if you are taking medicines containing vitamin D, unless otherwise prescribed
by your doctor who, in the case of association with such medicines, will monitor your calcium levels in
the blood and urine.
Use with caution and inform your doctor if you are taking:
- tetracyclines, medicines used for the treatment of infections by bacteria. Take these medicines at least 3 hours before or 3 hours after taking CALCIODIE;
- digitalis, medicines used for the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Take these medicines together with CALCIODIE under regular medical supervision, especially if you are also taking vitamin D;
- sodium fluoride, used for the treatment of bone disorders. Take these medicines away from taking CALCIODIE.

In children over 6 years of age, the recommended dose is 1 tablet per day (equivalent to 1 g of calcium), unless otherwise judged by your doctor.
If you take more CALCIODIE than you should
Overdosage, especially in subjects with kidney problems or heart disease, can cause an increase in blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia) and a decrease in body acidity (alkalosis), which manifest with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, thirst (polydipsia), increased need to urinate (polyuria), constipation (stipsi), changes in some heart parameters (electrocardiogram (ECG), increased blood pressure (arterial hypertension) and circulatory problems (vasomotor disturbances).
In children, excess calcium can cause a block in weight gain.
In case of overdosage, discontinue treatment with this medicine and take a high amount of fluids. Depending on the severity of the intoxication, the administration of medicines that increase urine elimination (diuretics) or corticosteroids may be necessary.
If you ingest/take an excessive amount of this medicine, seek immediate medical attention or go to the nearest hospital.
