Health education notes
First of all, it must be kept in mind that, in most cases, a balanced diet and
rich in water and fiber (bran, vegetables and fruit) can durably solve the problem of
constipation.
Many people think they suffer from constipation if they cannot evacuate every day.
This is a mistaken belief as this situation is perfectly normal for a large number
of individuals.
Instead, consider that constipation occurs when bowel movements are reduced compared to
your personal habits and are associated with the passage of hard stools.
If episodes of constipation occur repeatedly, you should consult your doctor.
Abuse of laxatives (frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses) can cause persistent diarrhea
resulting in loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients.
In the most severe cases, dehydration (excessive water loss from the body) or
hypokalemia (decreased potassium in the blood) can occur, which can cause heart or
muscle problems, especially if you are taking certain medications at the same time (see Other
medicines and Agiolax).
Abuse of laxatives can cause dependence (and therefore a possible need to gradually increase
the dosage), chronic constipation and intestinal atony (loss of normal
bowel function).
During treatment with Agiolax, it is necessary to drink a large amount of water (6-8
glasses a day) to prevent the onset of an intestinal obstruction.
Agiolax should only be used if a therapeutic effect cannot be obtained by modifying
the diet or administering bulk-forming laxatives.
Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines for the thyroid.
After oral administration or skin contact, Agiolax can cause hypersensitivity reactions
(allergies), see “Possible side effects”.
Abdominal pain, spasms and diarrhea may occur, especially in cases of pre-existing irritable colon
(altered bowel motility), see “Possible side effects”.
Some symptoms may also occur as a result of an overdose; in this case it is necessary
to reduce the dose (see ”If you take more AGIOLAX than you should”).
Other medicines and AGIOLAX
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take
any other medicine.
Avoid taking laxatives and other medicines at the same time: if you are taking another
medicine, allow an interval of at least 2 hours before using the laxative.
Consult your doctor before using this medicine:
- If you are taking opioids (medicines that reduce pain).
- If you are taking corticosteroids (medicines for inflammation)
- If you are taking diuretic medicines (medicines that lower blood pressure).
- If you are using cardiac glycosides (medicines used to treat heart problems). If you are using antiarrhythmics (medicines that regulate the heartbeat).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before
using this medicine.
The use of Agiolax during pregnancy and breastfeeding is contraindicated (see
“Do not use Agiolax”).

Agiolax does not impair the ability to drive vehicles or operate machinery.

3. How to use AGIOLAX
Use this medicine following exactly as described in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Dosage
The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce a soft bowel movement.
It is recommended to initially use the minimum prescribed doses.
If necessary, the dose may then be increased. Do not exceed the maximum recommended dose.
The recommended doses are:
Adults
The recommended dose is:
- 1-2 teaspoons (corresponding to 5 - 10 g of granules) in the morning and evening. In stubborn cases: 2 teaspoons every 6 hours for 1-3 days.
- 1-2 sachets of 5 g in the morning and evening. In stubborn cases 2 sachets every 6 hours for 1-3 days. Children (over 10 years)The recommended dose is:
- 1 teaspoon (corresponding to 5 g of granules) per day.
- 1 sachet of 5 g per day. A single dose of 5 g of granules contains:
- 2.6 g of Ispaghula seed
- 0.11 g of Ispaghula husk
- 0.34 - 0.66 g of Senna fruit Method of administration The granules should not be chewed or dissolved, but should be placed on the tongue and swallowed with a large glass of water. Agiolax should always be taken with liquids. Without sufficient liquids, the product may swell and obstruct the pharynx or esophagus, creating a risk of choking (see “Warnings and precautions”). It can be taken independently of meals. In case of a single daily dose, it is preferable to take it in the evening, one hour before bedtime. Duration of treatment Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and should not be used for more than 7 days. Prolonged use should be established by a doctor after adequate clinical evaluation.
If you take more AGIOLAX than you should
If you take an excessive dose of Agiolax, you may experience abdominal spasms (involuntary and sudden contractions of the intestine), abdominal pain, flatulence (emission of intestinal gases from the anus), intestinal obstruction and severe diarrhea.
In this case, stop treatment and take fluids to replenish fluid and electrolyte losses (salts contained in the blood).
Prolonged use of high doses of Agiolax can cause toxic hepatitis (liver damage).
If you forget to take AGIOLAX
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

your doctor or the nearest hospital where you will be given appropriate and specific
treatment:
- Hypersensitivity reactions (allergic reactions)
- Anaphylactic reactions (severe allergic reactions)
- Skin rash and itching. Abdominal cramps (painful contractions of the visceral muscles) may occur. The following side effects may also occur: Rare(may affect up to 1 in 1000 people):
- Flatulence (emission of intestinal gases from the anus)
