The name of your medicine is Ritalin and it contains the active substance ‘methylphenidate hydrochloride’. In this

Important things you must know about your medicine
This medicine is used to treat ADHD
- The full name for ADHD is ‘Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder’.
- This medicine helps your brain activity. It can help you improve attention, concentration and be less impulsive.
- You need other treatments for ADHD, in addition to this medicine. Read section 1 for further information. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if:
- You have heart, circulation or mental health problems - you may not be able to take this medicine.
- You are taking other medicines of any kind - this is because methylphenidate can affect the way other medicines work. Read section 2 for further information. While taking this medicine:
- Go to your doctor regularly. This is because your doctor will want to check how the medicine is working.
- Do not stop taking the medicine without first consulting your doctor.
- If you have been taking the medicine for more than a year, your doctor may stop the treatment to assess whether it is still needed.
- The most common side effects are nervousness, insomnia or headache. Read sections 3 and 4 for further information.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following occur:
- Your mood and the way you feel change.
- You feel you have heart problems. Read section 4 for further information.

- This medicine has been prescribed for you personally. Never give it to others. In fact, this medicine could be dangerous for other individuals, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.

1. What is Ritalin and what is it used for
What is Ritalin used for
Ritalin is used to treat 'Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder' (ADHD).
- It is used in children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 18 years.
- It is used only after trying other treatments that do not require the use of medicines, such as support therapy and behavioral therapy. Ritalin should not be used for the treatment of ADHD in children under 6 years of age or in adults. It is not known whether Ritalin is safe or effective in these patient populations.
How Ritalin works
Ritalin improves the activity of certain areas of the brain that are less active. The medicine can help to
improve attention, concentration and reduce impulsive behavior.
The medicine is given as part of a comprehensive treatment program which generally
includes:
- psychological therapy
- educational therapy and
- social therapy. It is prescribed only by doctors who have experience with behavioral disorders of children or adolescents. Although there is no cure for ADHD, it can be managed using comprehensive treatment programs. Information about ADHDFor children and adolescents with ADHD:
- it is difficult to sit still and
- it is difficult to concentrate. It is not their fault if they cannot do these things. Many children and adolescents struggle to do these things. However, having ADHD, they may have problems in everyday life. Children and adolescents with ADHD may have difficulty learning and doing homework. It is difficult for them to behave well at home, at school or in other places. ADHD has no influence on the intelligence of a child or adolescent.
2. Cosa deve sapere prima di prendere Ritalin
Non prenda Ritalin se:
- è allergico al metilfenidato o ad uno qualsiasi degli eccipienti di questo medicinale (elencati al paragrafo 6)
- ha un problema alla tiroide
- ha la pressione alta nell’occhio (glaucoma)
- ha un tumore alla ghiandola surrenale (feocromocitoma)
- ha un problema nel cibarsi quando non ha fame o quando vuole mangiare, come ad esempio l’‘anoressia nervosa’
- ha la pressione molto alta o ha un restringimento dei vasi sanguigni, che può causare dolore alle braccia e alle gambe
- ha avuto in passato problemi di cuore - come ad esempio attacco di cuore, battito irregolare, dolore e fastidio al torace, insufficienza cardiaca, malattia cardiaca, o se è già nato con un problema al cuore
- ha avuto in passato problemi ai vasi sanguigni cerebrali - come ad esempio ictus, rigonfiamento e indebolimento di una parte di un vaso sanguigno (aneurisma), restringimento o chiusura dei vasi sanguigni, o infiammazione dei vasi sanguigni (vasculite)
- assume attualmente o ha assunto negli ultimi 14 giorni un antidepressivo (noto come inibitore della monoaminoossidasi) (vedere Altri medicinali e Ritalin)
- ha disturbi mentali come ad esempio:
- un problema di ‘personalità psicopatica’ o ‘borderline’
- pensieri anomali o visioni o una malattia chiamata ‘schizofrenia’
- segni di gravi disturbi dell’umore come ad esempio: o avere voglia di suicidarsi o grave depressione, quando ci si sente molto tristi, inutili e disperati o mania, quando ci si sente insolitamente eccitabili, iper-attivi e senza inibizioni. Se una di queste condizioni la riguarda, non prenda il metilfenidato. Se non è sicuro, si rivolga al medico prima di prendere il metilfenidato. Questo perché il metilfenidato può peggiorare queste condizioni.
Avvertenze e precauzioni
Verifichi con il medico prima di iniziare il trattamento se:
- ha disturbi al fegato o ai reni
- ha sofferto di convulsioni (epilessia) o se qualche esame elettroencefalografico è risultato anomalo (elettroencefalogramma, EEG)
- ha mai avuto episodi di abuso o è stato dipendente dall’alcool, da medicinali da vendersi con prescrizione medica o da droghe comuni
- è una ragazza e ha già iniziato ad avere le mestruazioni (vedere sotto il paragrafo ‘Gravidanza, allattamento e fertilità)
- ha difficoltà nel controllarsi, ha contrazioni ripetute a qualsiasi parte del corpo o ripete suoni e parole
- ha la pressione alta
- ha problemi cardiaci che non sono descritti sopra nel paragrafo ‘Non prenda il metilfenidato se’
- ha un problema di salute mentale che non è descritto sopra nel paragrafo ‘Non prenda il metilfenidato se’. Altri problemi di salute mentale comprendono:
- sbalzi d’umore (da maniacale a depresso - si chiama ‘disturbo bipolare’)
- iniziare ad essere aggressivo o ostile, o un peggiorare della Sua aggressività
- vedere, sentire o percepire cose che non ci sono (allucinazioni)
- credere a cose che non sono vere (illusioni)
- sentirsi insolitamente sospettoso (paranoia)
- sentirsi agitato, ansioso o teso
- sentirsi depresso o colpevole. Se una di queste condizioni la riguarda, si rivolga al medico prima di iniziare il trattamento. Questo in
quanto il metilfenidato può peggiorare queste condizioni. Il medico vorrà controllare come il
medicinale agisce su di lei.
Controlli che il medico effettuerà prima che lei inizi il trattamento con metilfenidato
Questi controlli servono per decidere se il metilfenidato è il medicinale giusto per Lei. Il medico le
chiederà informazioni su:
- qualsiasi altro medicinale che lei sta assumendo
- qualsiasi episodio di morte improvvisa senza spiegazione apparente, qualsiasi episodio di aritmia ventricolare e di disturbi psichiatrici accaduti nella Sua famiglia
- qualsiasi altro problema medico (come ad esempio problemi di cuore) che riguarda Lei o la Sua famiglia
- come si sente, come ad esempio sentirsi su o giù, avere strani pensieri o se ha avuto in passato una qualsiasi di queste sensazioni
- storia familiare di ‘tics’ (contrazioni ripetute di qualsiasi parte del corpo o ripetizione di suoni e parole difficili da controllare)
- qualsiasi problema di salute mentale o di comportamento che lei o la Sua famiglia abbia avuto. Il medico le dirà se rischia di avere sbalzi d’umore (da maniacale a depresso - si chiama ‘disturbo bipolare’). Il medico verificherà la Sua storia di salute mentale, e verificherà se qualcuno della Sua famiglia ha una storia di suicidio, di disturbo bipolare o di depressione. E’ importante che fornisca quante più informazioni possibili. Queste aiuteranno il medico a decidere se il metilfenidato è il medicinale giusto per lei. Il medico può ritenere che sono necessari altri esami prima di iniziare a prendere questo medicinale.
Altri medicinali e Ritalin
Informi il medico se sta assumendo, ha recentemente assunto o potrebbe assumere qualsiasi altro
medicinale.
Non prenda il metilfenidato se:
- sta assumendo un medicinale chiamato ‘inibitore delle monoamino ossidasi’ (IMAO) utilizzato per la depressione, oppure se ha assunto un IMAO negli ultimi 14 giorni. Assumere un IMAO con il metilfenidato può causare un improvviso aumento della pressione. Se sta assumendo altri medicinali, il metilfenidato può influire sulla loro attività o può causare effetti indesiderati. Se sta assumendo uno qualsiasi dei seguenti medicinali, chieda consiglio al medico prima di prendere il metilfenidato:
- altri medicinali per la depressione
- medicinali per gravi problemi di salute mentale
- medicinali per l’epilessia
- medicinali usati per diminuire o aumentare la pressione
- alcuni rimedi contro la tosse e il raffreddore che contengono sostanze che possono avere effetto sulla pressione. E’ importante controllare con il farmacista quando acquista uno di questi prodotti
- medicinali che fluidificano il sangue per evitare che si formino coaguli. Se ha il dubbio che qualcuno dei medicinali che sta assumendo sia compreso nell’elenco sopra descritto, chieda consiglio al medico prima di prendere il metilfenidato.
In caso di intervento chirurgico
Informi il medico se sta per sottoporsi ad un intervento chirurgico. Non deve prendere il metilfenidato
il giorno dell’intervento se vengono usati gli anestetici. Questo in quanto c’è la possibilità di un
improvviso innalzamento della pressione e, in alcuni casi, della frequenza cardiaca durante
l’intervento.
Test per la ricerca di sostanze stupefacenti
Questo medicinale può dare un risultato positivo nei test per la ricerca di sostanze stupefacenti,
compresi i test effettuati a livello sportivo.
Durante il trattamento, i ragazzi e gli adolescenti possono sperimentare inaspettatamente erezioni
prolungate che possono essere dolorose e avvenire in qualsiasi momento. È importante rivolgersi al
medico immediatamente se l’erezione dura più di 2 ore, in particolare se è dolorosa.
Assunzione di Ritalin con cibi e bevande
L’assunzione di metilfenidato con il cibo può aiutare a bloccare il mal di stomaco, la nausea o il
vomito.
Assunzione di Ritalin con l’alcool
Non beva alcolici quando assume questo medicinale. L’alcool può peggiorare gli effetti indesiderati di
questo medicinale. Ricordi che alcuni cibi e alcuni medicinali contengono alcool.
Gravidanza, allattamento e fertilità
Se è in corso una gravidanza, se sospetta o sta pianificando una gravidanza o se sta allattando con latte
materno chieda consiglio al medico prima di prendere questo medicinale.
I dati a disposizione non indicano un aumento del rischio di difetti alla nascita complessivi, mentre
non ha potuto essere escluso un piccolo incremento del rischio di malformazioni cardiache in seguito
all’uso durante i primi tre mesi di gravidanza. Il medico potrà fornirle maggiori informazioni su questo
rischio. Informi il medico prima di prendere il medicinale se:
- ha una attività sessuale. Il medico parlerà con Lei dei metodi contraccettivi.
- è in stato di gravidanza o pensa di esserlo. Il medico valuterà se deve assumere metilfenidato.
- sta allattando o pensa di farlo. E’ possibile che il metilfenidato passi nel latte materno. Pertanto il medico valuterà se deve allattare mentre prende metilfenidato.
Guida di veicoli e utilizzo di macchinari
Può capitare che quando prende il metilfenidato le giri la testa, abbia difficoltà nella messa a fuoco o
abbia la visione offuscata. Se questo accade può essere pericoloso svolgere attività come guidare,
utilizzare macchinari, andare in bicicletta o a cavallo o arrampicarsi sugli alberi.
Informazioni importanti su alcuni eccipienti di Ritalin
Questo medicinale contiene lattosio (un tipo di zucchero). Se il medico le ha diagnosticato una
intolleranza agli zuccheri, lo contatti prima di prendere questo medicinale.
Questo medicinale contiene amido di frumento. Se soffre di diarrea grassosa cronica (ma non di
celiachia), non deve assumere Ritalin.
Quanto Ritalin prendere
Prenda sempre Ritalin seguendo esattamente le istruzioni del medico. Se ha dubbi consulti il medico.
- Il medico generalmente inizierà il trattamento con una dose bassa e l’aumenterà gradualmente come richiesto.
- La dose massima giornaliera è di 60 mg.
- Prenda Ritalin una o due volte al giorno (ad esempio a colazione e/o all’ora di pranzo).
- Non prenda Ritalin alla sera: devono trascorrere almeno 4 ore dall’ultima somministrazione al momento di coricarsi. Se così facendo alla sera si sente disturbato, si rivolga al medico.
- Le compresse devono essere inghiottite con un sorso di acqua.
- Può spezzare la compressa per facilitare l’ingestione. Se non si sente bene dopo 1 mese di trattamentoSe non si sente bene, informi il medico. Il medico può ritenere che lei necessiti di un trattamento differente. Uso improprio di RitalinSe Ritalin non è usato correttamente, può verificarsi un comportamento anomalo. Può anche significare che sta iniziando a dipendere da questo medicinale. Informi il medico se ha mai avuto

episodi di abuso o sia stato dipendente da alcool, da medicinali da vendersi con prescrizione medica o
da droghe comuni.
Questo medicinale è solo per lei. Non lo dia ad altri individui, anche se i loro sintomi sembrano simili.
Se prende più Ritalin di quanto deve
Se prende troppo medicinale, contatti immediatamente un medico o chiami un’ambulanza. Li informi
di quanto medicinale ha preso.
I segni di sovradosaggio possono comprendere: vomito, stato d’agitazione, tremori, aumento dei
movimenti incontrollati, contrazioni muscolari, convulsioni (a volte seguite da coma), sensazione di
euforia, confusione, vedere, sentire o percepire cose che non sono reali (allucinazioni), sudorazione,
vampate di calore, cefalea, febbre alta ,modifiche del battito cardiaco (lento, veloce o irregolare),
pressione alta, pupille dilatate e secchezza del naso e della bocca; spasmi muscolari (contrazioni
improvvise e involontarie dei muscoli), febbre, colorazione rosso-brunastra delle urine che possono
essere segni di distruzione anomala dei tessuti muscolari (rabdomiolisi).
Se dimentica di prendere Ritalin
Non prenda una dose doppia per compensare la dimenticanza della dose. Se dimentica una dose,
aspetti fino all’ora della dose successiva.
Se interrompe il trattamento con Ritalin
Se ha qualsiasi dubbio sull’uso di Ritalin, si rivolga al medico.
Se interrompe improvvisamente il trattamento con Ritalin, possono ripresentarsi i sintomi dell’ADHD
o possono verificarsi effetti indesiderati come la depressione. Il medico può ritenere opportuno ridurre
gradualmente la quantità di medicinale assunta ogni giorno, prima di interrompere il trattamento
definitivamente. Informi il medico prima di interrompere il trattamento con Ritalin.
Cosa farà il medico durante il trattamento con Ritalin
Il medico le farà alcuni controlli
- prima di iniziare il trattamento - per assicurarsi che Ritalin sia sicuro per lei e le porti beneficio.
- dopo aver iniziato il trattamento - i controlli dovranno essere fatti almeno ogni 6 mesi, ma, se possibile, anche più frequentemente. Verranno fatti anche quando sarà modificato il dosaggio.
- questi controlli comprenderanno:
- controllo dell’appetito
- misurazione dell’altezza e del peso
- misurazione della pressione, del battito cardiaco ed eventuale elettrocardiogramma
- verifica dell’insorgenza o del peggioramento, durante il trattamento con Ritalin, di qualsiasi problema riguardante l’umore, lo stato d’animo o qualsiasi altra insolita sensazione. Trattamento a lungo termineNon è necessario assumere Ritalin per sempre. Se sta assumendo Ritalin da più di un anno, il medico deve interrompere il trattamento per un breve periodo, che può coincidere con una vacanza scolastica. Questo dimostrerà se è ancora necessario assumere il medicinale.
Se ha qualsiasi dubbio sull’uso di Ritalin, si rivolga al medico.
- 4. Possibili effetti indesiderati
Come tutti i medicinali, questo medicinale può causare effetti indesiderati sebbene non tutte le persone
li manifestino. Il medico Le darà informazioni su questi effetti indesiderati.
Alcuni effetti indesiderati possono essere gravi. Se si verifica uno degli effetti indesiderati
elencati sotto, contatti immediatamente un medico:

- battito cardiaco irregolare (palpitazioni)
- alterazioni o sbalzi d’umore o alterazioni della personalità
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
- thinking about or trying to kill oneself
- perceiving or feeling things that are not real - these are symptoms of psychosis
- uncontrolled language and body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
- signs of allergy such as skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
- feeling unusually excited, hyperactive and disinhibited (mania) Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
- heart attack
- seizures (epilepsy)
- skin peeling or the appearance of red-purple spots
- uncontrollable muscle contractions of the eyes, head, neck, body and nervous system - this is due to a temporary lack of blood supply to the brain
- paralysis or problems with movements and vision, difficulty speaking (these may be signs of problems with blood vessels in the brain)
- decrease in the number of blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets) which may make infections more likely and facilitate bleeding and bruising
- sudden increase in body temperature, very high blood pressure and severe seizures ('Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome'). It is not clear whether these undesirable effects are caused by methylphenidate or other drugs that may be taken in combination with methylphenidate. Other undesirable effects (frequency not known)
- unwanted thoughts that keep coming back
- fainting without reason, chest pain, shortness of breath (these may be signs of heart problems)
- prolonged, sometimes painful, erections or increased number of erections
If any of the side effects described above occur, contact a doctor immediately.
Other undesirable effects: if these become serious, inform your doctor:
Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people)
- headache
- nervousness
- inability to fall asleep. Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
- joint pain
- dry mouth
- high temperature (fever)
- unusual hair loss or thinning
- feeling unusually sleepy or drowsy
- loss or decrease of appetite
- itching, rash or raised, red, itchy skin rashes (hives)
- cough, sore throat or irritation of the nose and throat
- high blood pressure, fast heartbeat (tachycardia)
- dizziness, uncontrollable movements, being unusually active
- feeling of aggression, agitation, anxiety, depression, irritability and abnormal behavior
- stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, gastric discomfort and vomiting. These usually occur at the beginning of treatment and can be reduced by taking the medicine with food
- excessive teeth grinding (bruxism) Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
- constipation
- chest disorders
- blood in the urine
- jerks or tremors
- double or blurred vision
- muscle pain, muscle contractions
- shortness of breath, chest pain
- increase in liver test values (found during a blood test)
- anger, feeling restless or sad, excessive awareness of the surroundings, sleep disturbances Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
- changes in sexual drive
- feeling disoriented
- dilated pupils, vision disturbances
- breast enlargement in men
- excessive sweating, skin flushing, raised red skin rashes Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
- heart attack
- sudden death
- muscle cramps
- small red spots on the skin
- inflammation or blockage of the arteries in the brain
- abnormal liver function including liver failure and coma
- changes in test results - including liver and blood tests
- attempt to commit suicide, abnormal thinking, lack of feelings or emotions, doing things repeatedly, being obsessed with one thing
- feeling of numbness in the fingers of the hands and feet, tingling and change of color (from white to blue, then red) when it is cold ('Raynaud's phenomenon') Other undesirable effects (frequency not known)
- migraine
- very high fever
- slow, fast or extra heartbeats
- a major seizure ('grand mal')
- believing things that are not true, confusion
- severe stomach pain, often with nausea and vomiting
- problems with blood vessels in the brain (stroke, cerebral arteritis or cerebral occlusion)
- difficulty getting an erection
- uncontrolled excessive talking
- inability to control urination (incontinence)
- spasm of the jaw muscles that makes it difficult to open the mouth (trismus)
- stammering (stuttering)
- nosebleeds
Effects on growth
When used for more than one year, methylphenidate may cause some children to have a delay in
growth. This affects less than 1 in 10 children.
- It may occur that weight and height do not increase.
- The doctor will carefully monitor your weight and height, as well as assess your appetite.
- If you are not growing as expected, treatment with methylphenidate may be interrupted for a short period.
Reporting of side effects
If you get any side effects, even those not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or
pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly through the national reporting system at
https://www.aifa.gov.it/content/segnalazioni-reazioni-avverse.
By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Make sure to store the medicine in a safe place, so that no one else can take it, especially younger
brothers or sisters.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the label. The expiry date refers to
the last day of that month.
Do not store above 25°C.
Do not dispose of any medicine in waste water or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to
dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What Ritalin contains
The active ingredient is methylphenidate hydrochloride.
Ritalin tablets contain 10 mg of methylphenidate hydrochloride.
The excipients are: calcium phosphate, lactose monohydrate, wheat starch, gelatin, magnesium
stearate, talc.
Description of the appearance of Ritalin and contents of the pack
Ritalin tablets are available in a dosage of: 10 mg.
The medicine is available in blisters contained in packs of 20, 30, or 50
tablets.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.

Information for children and adolescents with ADHD
This information has been prepared so you can learn the main features of your
medicine called Ritalin.
If you don’t like reading, someone like your mum, dad or the person who looks after you can
read it to you and answer any questions.
They can help you read small pieces at a time.
Why have I been given this medicine?
This medicine can help children and adolescents with ‘ADHD’.
- ADHD can: make you rush around too much or make you unable to pay attention or make you act quickly without thinking about what will happen next (that is, make you impulsive)
- ADHD affects your ability to learn, make friends and how you feel about yourself. It is not your fault.
While you are taking this medicine
- As well as taking this medicine, you will also get help with how to cope with ADHD, like talking to ADHD specialists.
- This medicine should help you, but it does not cure ADHD.
- You will need to go to the doctor several times a year for check-ups. This is to make sure the medicine is working and that your growth and development are OK.
- If you take the medicine for more than a year, the doctor may stop the treatment to see if you still need it. This will probably happen during a school holiday.
- If you take this medicine more than once a day, it may be that you need to be reminded to take it at school.Your mum, dad or the person who looks after you will need to check what the school rules are about this.
- Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol can make the side effects of this medicine worse.
- Girls must tell the doctor immediately if they think they might be pregnant. We do not know how this medicine affects unborn babies. If you are sexually active, talk to your doctor about contraception. Some people cannot take this medicineYou must not take this medicine if:
- you have a heart problem
- you feel very unhappy, depressed or have a mental health problem.
Some people need to talk to the doctor before starting to take this medicine
You must talk to the doctor if:
- you suffer from epilepsy (fits)
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- you are taking other medicines - the doctor needs to know about all the medicines you are taking.
How do I take my medicine (tablets)?
