1. What is Normase and what is it used for
Normase contains lactulose, a laxative that draws water into the intestine and makes stools softer.
Normase is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation.
Consult your doctor if you or your child do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.
2. What you need to know before using Normase
Do not use Normase if:
- you or your child are allergic to lactulose or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- you have abdominal pain, even of unknown origin;
- you have episodes of nausea or vomiting;
- you have an obstruction or narrowing of the intestine (intestinal stenosis);
- you have bleeding from the rectum (the last part of the intestine), of unknown origin;
- you suffer from severe dehydration (excessive loss of water from the body);
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Normase.
Health education notes
First of all, it must be kept in mind that, in most cases, a balanced diet and
rich in water and fiber (bran, vegetables and fruit) can durably solve the problem of
constipation.
Many people think they suffer from constipation if they cannot evacuate every day.
This is a mistaken belief as this situation is perfectly normal for a large number
of individuals.
Instead, consider that constipation occurs when bowel movements are reduced compared to
your personal habits and are associated with the passage of hard stools.
If episodes of constipation occur repeatedly, you should consult your doctor.
The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires the intervention of the doctor for
diagnosis, prescription of drugs and monitoring during therapy.
Consult your doctor:
- when the need for a laxative derives from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts for more than two weeks or when the use of the laxative fails to produce effects.
- if you are elderly or are not in good health. Abuse of laxatives Frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses of laxatives can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients. In the most severe cases, dehydration (excessive loss of water from the body) or hypokalaemia (decrease in blood potassium) may occur, which can cause cardiac or neuromuscular disorders, especially if you are also taking medicines such as cardiac glycosides (medicines used to treat heart problems), diuretics (medicines that lower blood pressure) or corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory drugs). Abuse of laxatives can cause dependence (possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation and intestinal atony (loss of normal intestinal functions).
Other medicines and Normase
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicine.
Avoid taking laxatives and other medicines at the same time: if you are taking another
medicine, allow an interval of at least 2 hours before using the laxative.
Tell your doctor if you are taking:
- neomycin and other antibiotics (medicines used to treat infections caused by bacteria);
- digitalis (medicine used to treat heart disease);
- diuretics (medicines used to reduce blood pressure);
- corticosteroids (medicines used for the treatment of allergies and inflammation).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
with breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
The use of this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be
considered only if absolutely necessary and under the direct supervision of your doctor.

3. How to use Normase
Use this medicine following exactly as stated in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Dosage
The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce easy evacuation of soft stools. It is
recommended to initially use the minimum doses provided.
When necessary, the dose may be increased. Do not exceed the recommended maximum daily
dose.
Adults
The recommended initial dose is 20 ml per day.
The maintenance dose is 10 ml per day.
If necessary, you may take a higher initial dose (30-40 ml) which should then be reduced
progressively to 10 ml per day (maintenance dose).
Children
The recommended dose is 5 - 15 ml per day, based on body weight.
Infants
The recommended dose is 0.5 - 1 ml per day for each kg of body weight.
Method of administration
In case of a single daily dose, it is preferable to take it in the evening. If the dose is
divided into two administrations per day, it is preferable to take it in the morning and in the evening.
Ingest with an adequate amount of water (a large glass).
Duration of treatment
Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. Use
for longer periods requires a doctor's prescription after adequate clinical evaluation.
If you use more Normase than you should
If you have taken more Normase than you should, talk to a doctor or go to hospital immediately. Bring the
package of the medicine with you.
In case of accidental ingestion/intake of an excessive dose, abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur, in which case stop treatment and take fluids to replenish
fluid and electrolyte losses (salts contained in the blood).
If you forget to use Normase
Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
