- 3. How to take Magnesia S. Pellegrino
- 4. Possible side effects

1. What is Magnesia S. Pellegrino and what is it used for?
Magnesia S. Pellegrino contains magnesium hydroxide.
It is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation and for the treatment of
heartburn (antacid).
See your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.
2. What you need to know before taking Magnesia S. Pellegrino
Do not take Magnesia S. Pellegrino if:
you are allergic to magnesium hydroxide or any of the other ingredients of this
medicine (listed in section 6);
you suffer from a severe reduction in kidney function (severe renal insufficiency);
you have acute or of unknown origin abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, blockage or
narrowing of the intestine (intestinal obstruction or stenosis), bleeding from the rectum of
unknown origin, severe dehydration;
the child to be treated is less than 6 years old.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Magnesia S. Pellegrino:
- if you suffer from chronic or recurrent constipation. In this case, medical intervention is always necessary for a diagnosis and for the prescription of other medicines and medical supervision during therapy;.
- if you have kidney problems;
- if you are elderly; When the need for a laxative derives from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts for more than two weeks, or when the use of the laxative fails to produce effects, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
The abuse of laxatives (frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses) can cause persistent
diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential
nutrients.
In the most serious cases, dehydration or a reduction in potassium in the
blood is possible, which may
determine heart, muscle and nervous system dysfunction, especially in case of
concurrent treatment with certain medicines used for heart problems (cardiac glycosides),
with medicines that increase urine production (diuretics) or with medicines used for
treating immune system diseases (corticosteroids).
Laxative abuse can cause dependence (the need to progressively increase the
dosage), chronic constipation and loss of normal bowel function (intestinal atony).
Health education notes
First of all, it must be kept in mind that, in most cases, a balanced
diet rich in water and fiber (bran, vegetables and fruit) can durably solve the problem of
constipation.
Many people think they suffer from constipation if they cannot evacuate every day. This
is a mistaken belief as this situation is perfectly normal for a large number of
individuals.
Instead, consider that constipation occurs when bowel movements decrease compared to
your personal habits and are associated with the emission of hard stools.
Consult your doctor if episodes of constipation occur repeatedly.
Children
In young children, the use of magnesium hydroxide can cause hypermagnesemia, especially if
they have kidney damage or dehydration.
Other medicines and Magnesia S. Pellegrino
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or may
take any other medicines, including those available without a prescription.
Some medicines may be affected by magnesium hydroxide or may affect its
functioning.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking salicylates
Laxatives can reduce the time of permanence in the intestine, and therefore the absorption, of other
drugs administered simultaneously orally.
After taking another medicine, allow at least 2 hours before
taking the laxative.
Tell your doctor if you are being treated with:
antacids (medicines used for stomach problems);
antibiotics (tetracyclines, nitrofurantoin, lincomycin), which are used for the treatment of
infections caused by bacteria;
indometacin and dexamethasone (anti-inflammatory drugs);
phosphorus,
digitalis (medicines used for heart problems),
quinidine (used for heart rhythm disturbances);
iron salts.
