- 1. What Lattulac is and what it is used for
- 2. What you need to know before using Lattulac
- 3. How to use Lattulac
- 4. Possible side effects
- 5. How to store Lattulac
- 6. Contents of the pack and other information
1. What is Lattulac and what is it used for
Lattulac contains lactulose which belongs to a category of drugs called osmotic laxatives.
Lattulac is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation.
2. What you need to know before using Lattulac
Do not use Lattulac
- if you are allergic to lactulose or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
- if you have intestinal pain or rectal bleeding of unknown cause, if you have nausea, vomiting, a blockage or narrowing of the stomach or intestines, or severe dehydration.
- if you suffer from a hereditary disease characterized by the accumulation of galactose, called galactosemia. Lattulac is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor considers its administration necessary. Lattulac is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Do not give Lattulac to children under 12 years of age unless after consulting your doctor. Also consult your doctor if these disorders have occurred in the past.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Lattulac.
Use Lattulac with particular caution:
- if you suffer from disorders caused by excessive intestinal bloating (gas in the intestine): in this case it is advisable to start treatment with the minimum doses, which may be gradually increased depending on your response.
Pay particular attention and inform your doctor who will monitor you:
- if you suffer from chronic or recurrent constipation
- if the need for a laxative stems from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts for more than two weeks or when the use of the laxative fails to produce effects
- if you are taking medicines for heart failure (digitalis)
- if you are elderly or in poor health
- after a short period of treatment without noticeable results
- even in cases where disorders related to constipation have occurred in the past. Keep in mind that:
- you must avoid using this medicine continuously
- the urge to evacuate may be different from usual during treatment
- you should consult your doctor if symptoms persist for more than seven days or worsen during treatment. Abuse of laxatives (frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses) can cause:
- persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts and other essential substances
- in the most severe cases, dehydration or a serious decrease in blood potassium levels may occur, which can determine heart or nerve and muscle dysfunction, especially if you are simultaneously taking medicines for the heart (digitalis), medicines to increase urine production (diuretics) or corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory drugs)
- the need to progressively increase the dosage
- chronic constipation
- loss of normal bowel function (decreased intestinal tone).
Health education notes
A balanced diet rich in water and fiber (bran, vegetables and fruit) can permanently solve the
problem of constipation. Many people think they suffer from constipation if they cannot
evacuate every day: this is a mistaken belief as this situation is perfectly normal
for a large number of people.
Constipation can be said to occur when bowel movements are reduced compared to one's personal habits
and are associated with the passage of hard stools.
Consult your doctor if episodes of constipation occur repeatedly
Children
Lattulac can be used in children under 12 years of age only after consulting a doctor.
Other medicines and Lattulac
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take
any other medicine.
Avoid taking laxatives and other medicines at the same time. After taking a medicine
wait at least two hours before taking the laxative, because laxatives can reduce
the absorption of other medicines taken simultaneously by mouth.
Lattulac can reduce the effectiveness of the following medicines:
- antibiotics
- medicines to reduce stomach acidity
Lattulac can affect the effect or toxicity of other medicines such as:
- intestinal anti-inflammatory drugs (5-ASA)
- medicines used for heart disorders (digitalis) Some medicines can increase the effect of Lattulac:
- antibiotic (Neomycin)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
with breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use Lattulac only if necessary and under the direct
supervision of your doctor, who will carefully assess the expected benefit for you in relation to the possible
risk to the fetus or your baby.

3. How to use Lattulac
Use this medicine following exactly the instructions in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
1 single-dose sachet corresponds to 15 ml of lactulose.
The recommended dose in adults is:
10-20 ml in 2 administrations, or one sachet per day.
This dose may be doubled or halved based on your response and your symptoms.
Use in children
Children:
From 5 to 15 ml per day, even in a single administration, depending on age and the severity of the case, at the
doctor's discretion. For reduced administrations to children (less than 15 ml per day in a single
administration) the use of Lattulac syrup is recommended.
Infants:
On average 2.5 ml per day, at the doctor's discretion. For administration to infants, the use of Lattulac syrup is recommended.
Administer Lattulac orally (by mouth), alone or together with a large glass of water, preferably in the evening. The total amount can be taken in a single dose.
It is important to know that:
- the correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce an easy evacuation of soft stools.
- initially use the minimum doses provided.
- when necessary, the dose can then be increased, but never exceeding the maximum indicated.
- do not exceed the indicated doses.
- you should consult your doctor if you do not notice appreciable results after a short period of treatment (not exceeding seven days).
- a diet rich in fluids promotes the effect of the medicine.
- laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days.
- use for longer periods requires a doctor's prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case.
If you take more Lattulac than you should
Immediately inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital if you have accidentally
taken an excessive dose of Lattulac.
Stop treatment if you experience abdominal pain or diarrhea following the administration of excessive doses of Lattulac.
You must replace the resulting fluid and electrolyte losses.
