1. What is Furedan and what is it used for
Furedan contains nitrofurantoin as its active ingredient, a synthetic antibacterial.
Furedan is used to treat urinary tract infections, including the prostate, caused by bacteria
that are sensitive to this active ingredient.
2. What you need to know before taking Furedan
Do not take Furedan:
- if you are allergic to nitrofurantoin, to other nitrofurans (the chemical class to which nitrofurantoin belongs) or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you have severe kidney problems including failure or reduced urine output;
- if you are near term (late pregnancy). (see section Pregnancy and breastfeeding);
- if you have a deficiency of an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, due to the risk of having a low concentration of hemoglobin in the blood (anemia) following the destruction of red blood cells caused by the medicine.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Furedan.
Before using the medicine, it is necessary for you to undergo a test to verify whether the bacteria that
caused the infection are sensitive to this product, as some may be resistant.
If you need to take Furedan for long periods of time, your doctor will monitor you closely
because neurological and lung manifestations may occur. If
lung problems occur or you experience altered sensitivity in the limbs (paresthesia) or
develop anemia caused by increased destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis)
you should stop therapy and see your doctor.
Talk to your doctor if you suffer from diabetes, kidney disorders, debilitating diseases,
have a vitamin deficiency or an imbalance of salts in the body because you are at greater risk of
experiencing peripheral nervous system disorders (neuropathies).
Furedan, like other antibacterials, may cause the development of resistant bacteria, especially
the bacterium called Pseudomonas and therefore may not be able to kill all the germs that cause
the infection.
Contact your doctor if you experience fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, itching,
skin rashes, joint pain, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine and pale or gray stools. These may be symptoms of liver disorders.
Children
The tablet form of Furedan is not indicated in childhood.
Other medicines and Furedan
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take
any other medicines.
In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking the following medicines as
the effectiveness of nitrofurantoin may be altered:
- probenecid (medicine used for gout and high uric acid levels in the blood);
- antacids (used to neutralize stomach acidity);
- nalidixic and oxolinic acid (antibacterial drugs)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, are planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
You should not take Furedan in late pregnancy as nitrofurantoin is
contraindicated.
During pregnancy, you should still use this medicine only if absolutely
necessary and under direct medical supervision.

Immediately inform your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Loss of appetite (anorexia), nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea.
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (cholestatic jaundice; a rare event), inflammation of the liver (hypersensitivity hepatitis), liver inflammation due to activation of the immune system against liver cells with an unknown frequency.
- Inflammation of one or more peripheral nerves (peripheral neuritis) sometimes severe and irreversible, initially manifesting as altered sensitivity in the limbs (peripheral paraesthetic disturbances) and which may progress to involve the muscles. Other reactions affecting the nervous system are: headache, dizziness, involuntary eye movements (nystagmus), increased pressure inside the skull causing severe headaches (intracranial hypertension), alterations to the cerebellum causing balance disorders, severe inflammation of the optic nerve causing difficulty in vision (retrobulbar neuritis) and episodes of intense pain localized to the eyes, lips, nose, scalp, forehead, teeth and internal mucous membranes of the jaw and mandible (trigeminal neuralgia).

- Appearance of small spots on the skin (urticaria), itching, appearance of red, raised spots with blisters (erythematous-papular and vesicular eruptions); joint pain (arthralgia); asthma attacks; severe allergic reaction with rapid onset (anaphylaxis).
