1. What Cytotec is and what it is used for
Cytotec contains the active ingredient misoprostol which belongs to a group of medicines called
prostaglandin E1 analogues. This medicine protects the mucosa of the stomach and intestine from
substances that can cause lesions.
Cytotec is indicated:
- to preventlesions of the stomach and intestine ( gastroduodenal ulcers) caused by the use of medicines used to relieve the symptoms of inflammation (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - NSAIDs);
- to treatlesions of the stomach and intestine ( gastroduodenal ulcers), even when they are induced by treatment with NSAIDs in people with severe joint disorders (arthritic patients at risk) and who must continue therapy with these medicines.
2. What you need to know before taking Cytotec
Do not take Cytotec
- if you are allergic to misoprostol, to similar medicines (other prostaglandins) or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6); if you are a woman of childbearing potential and are not using an effective contraceptive method to avoid becoming pregnant (see section “Pregnancy and breastfeeding”);
- if you are or think you might be pregnant or if you are planning a pregnancy or have a negative pregnancy test, as it can cause a miscarriage (see section “Pregnancy and breastfeeding”).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist beforetaking Cytotec if:
- you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant (see subsection “Pregnancy” below). Due to the risk to the fetus, your treatment with Cytotec must be stopped immediately.
- you are a woman of childbearing potential (see subsection “Pregnancy” below). Due to the risk to the fetus, it is important to use an effective contraceptive method while taking Cytotec.
- you suffer from disorders that can cause diarrhea, such as inflammatory bowel disease. To reduce the risk of diarrhea, Cytotec should be taken with food and should not be taken together with antacids containing magnesium, used to treat some stomach disorders (see sections “Other medicines and Cytotec” and “How to take Cytotec”);
- you have problems that may be worsened by fluid loss (dehydration). In this case, the doctor will carefully monitor your health condition;
- you suffer from severe blood circulation disorders, especially to the heart and brain (cerebrovascular diseases, coronary heart disease or severe peripheral vasculopathy), or have high blood pressure (hypertension), as this medicine can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure (hypotension) with worsening of the symptoms of these diseases.
Duringtreatment with Cytotec, bleeding, lesions or perforations of the stomach
and intestines may occur, especially when Cytotec is taken together with other medicines used to relieve the
symptoms of inflammation (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - NSAIDs) (see section “Other medicines and
Cytotec”). The doctor will subject you to frequent checks.
Laboratory tests
Before starting treatment with Cytotec, the doctor will subject you to specific tests (endoscopy, biopsy),
to rule out that lesions of the stomach or intestine are caused by a tumor (neoplastic lesions),
as this medicine can mask the symptoms of the tumor and delay diagnosis.
Such investigations and others deemed necessary by the doctor may be repeated at regular intervals to
carry out further assessments of your health status.
Other medicines and Cytotec
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicine.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs- NSAIDs(medicines that
relieve pain and reduce inflammation). These medicines, if taken together with Cytotec, may
alter the result of some laboratory tests (increased transaminases) and cause swelling due to
fluid retention, especially in the legs and ankles (peripheral edema).
Avoid taking Cytotec together with magnesium-containing antacids(medicines used for stomach disorders),
as they increase the risk of diarrhea induced by this medicine.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding with breast
milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy
. Do nottake Cytotec if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy. Your
doctor will inform you of the risks in case of pregnancy, as Cytotec may cause miscarriage,
premature birth or congenital malformations (serious damage to your baby), including fetal death. Pregnancies exposed to misoprostol during the first trimester have been associated with an approximately 3-fold increased risk of
congenital malformations, in particular facial paralysis, limb defects, brain and cranial anomalies.
If you are exposed to Cytotec during pregnancy, ask your doctor for advice. If you decide
to continue with the pregnancy, accurate prenatal checks and repeated ultrasound examinations must be performed,
with particular attention to the limbs and head.
If you are a woman of childbearing potential, before starting therapy with Cytotec, perform a test to make sure you are not
pregnant. Start treatment with this medicine on the second or third day of your normal menstrual cycle
and use an effective contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy during
treatment.
If pregnancy occurs accidentally, you must stoptreatment with this
medicine immediately (see section “Do not take Cytotec”).
Breastfeeding
This medicine passes into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, do not take Cytotec as it may
cause diarrhea in the infant.
Driving and operating machinery
This medicine can cause dizziness. Therefore, avoid driving vehicles or operating machinery if
you experience this symptom.
Cytotec contains castor oil
This medicine contains castor oil. It may cause stomach upset and diarrhea.
Cytotec contains sodium
This medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) of sodium per tablet, i.e. essentially “sodium-free”.

Prevention of stomach and intestinal lesions (gastroduodenal ulcers) caused by the use of
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – NSAIDs
The recommended dose is 200 mcg, to be taken 2-4 times a day. The doctor will establish the dose and duration
of treatment most suitable for you, based on your health conditions.
Treatment of stomach and intestinal lesions (gastroduodenal ulcers) caused by the use of
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – NSAIDs
The recommended dose is 800 mcg per day, to be taken divided into 2 or 4 administrations per day.
You must continue the treatment for at least 4 weeks, even if the symptoms improve more
quickly. If necessary, your doctor may advise you to continue the treatment for up to 8 weeks.

cycle of therapy with Cytotec.
If you are elderly
No dose adjustments are necessary in elderly patients.
If you have kidney problems
If you have kidney problems, it may be necessary to reduce the dose.
