CARDIORAL® 75 mg soft capsules

Generic medicine
Read this leaflet carefully before taking this medicine as it contains
important information for you.
- Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again.
- If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- This medicine has been prescribed for you only. Do not pass it on to others, even if their symptoms are the same as yours, as it could be harmful.
- If you get any side effects, even those not listed in this leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist. See section 4.
- Throughout this leaflet, CARDIORAL 75 mg soft capsules will be referred to as CARDIORAL.

1. What is CARDIORAL and what is it used for
- CARDIORAL contains acetylsalicylic acid (also known as aspirin), which acts as an antiplatelet agent, preventing blood from clotting and obstructing blood flow to important areas of the body, such as the heart or brain.
- CARDIORAL can be used in patients with a history of transient ischemic attacks and acute cerebrovascular events or myocardial infarction, to prevent the occurrence of new episodes. The medicine can also be used to prevent cardiovascular problems in patients with stable or unstable angina (a type of chest pain).
- This medicine is also used in patients who have undergone cardiac surgery to widen or unblock arteries to prevent any future obstructions.
- This medicine is not recommended for use in emergency situations, but should only be used as preventive treatment.
- This form of aspirin is not suitable as symptomatic therapy for pain or fever.
- This medicine is not recommended for children under the age of 12.
- Consult your doctor if you are not sure why this medicine has been prescribed to you.
2. What you need to know before taking CARDIORAL
Do not take CARDIORAL if:
- you are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid (also known as aspirin), to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or to any of the other ingredients of CARDIORAL (listed in section 6);
- you suffer from a rare immune system disorder called mastocytosis;
- you suffer from asthma caused by aspirin or other NSAIDs;
- you have a gastric ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding or other types of bleeding such as cerebral haemorrhage;
- you have previously experienced gastric problems while taking aspirin;
- you suffer from disorders that alter blood coagulation, such as haemophilia;
- you have severe liver disorders;
- you have severe kidney disorders;
- you are in the last trimester of pregnancy (see section on pregnancy and breastfeeding).
Warnings and precautions
Medicines are not always suitable for everyone; your doctor may need to carry out tests to verify that this medicine is suitable for you. Talk to your doctor before taking CARDIORAL if you suffer from or have suffered in the past from any of the following conditions:
- Gastric or intestinal ulcers;
- Mild or moderate liver disorders;
- Kidney disorders;
- Asthma, urticaria, or rhinitis due to allergy;
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Hypertension;
- Gout (a disorder that causes pain, inflammation and swelling of one or more joints);
- An inherited red blood cell disorder called “G6PD deficiency or favism”
If you notice unusual bleeding, such as blood in your sputum, blood in your vomit or urine, or dark-coloured stools, you should immediately stop taking CARDIORAL and contact your doctor.
Surgical operations
If you are about to undergo surgery or a tooth extraction, your doctor may ask you to temporarily interrupt the treatment.
Other medicines and CARDIORAL
Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any of the following medicines.
CARDIORAL can increase the effects of some medicines or increase the occurrence of side effects.
Some of these may be:
- Medicines used to thin the blood (warfarin, heparin, ticlopidine) or to dissolve blood clots during a heart attack or acute cerebrovascular episode (clopidogrel);
- Corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory drugs) e.g. prednisolone or NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac);
- Medicines used to treat depression or anxiety, including lithium or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine or sertraline.
- Methotrexate used in the treatment of psoriasis (skin inflammation) or cancer .
The following medicines may decrease the effectiveness of CARDIORAL:
- Medicines used for gastric ulcers (omeprazole, sucralfate, medicines known as H2-antagonists such as cimetidine, ranitidine, famotidine and some antacids).
CARDIORAL may reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time. These include:
- Medicines used in the treatment of gout (benzbromarone, probenecid).
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including those available without a prescription.
CARDIORAL with alcohol
Drinking alcohol may increase the occurrence of side effects.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, suspect you may be pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are breastfeeding, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.
CARDIORAL is not recommended in the first 3 months of pregnancy unless under medical supervision and must notbe taken during the last trimester of pregnancy.
Breastfeeding
Do not take CARDIORAL if you are breastfeeding.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any medicine.
Driving and using machines
There is no evidence that CARDIORAL alters the ability to drive vehicles or use machines.
CARDIORAL contains Sorbitol
Sugar intolerance: this medicine contains sorbitol, a type of sugar. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact them before using this medicine.
3. How to use CARDIORAL
Always use CARDIORAL exactly as your doctor has instructed. If you have any doubts, consult your
doctor or pharmacist. It is advisable to take CARDIORAL every day at the same time.
Swallow the capsule whole, with a glass of water.
CARDIORAL can be taken before or after meals.
Adults
The usual dose is one 75 mg capsule per day.
Elderly
The usual dose is one 75 mg capsule per day.
Children
CARDIORAL is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
If you take more CARDIORAL than you should
In case of accidental intake of an excessive dose of capsules, contact your
doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital. Bring the package of the medicine with you, even if it is empty.
Symptoms of overdose may include a feeling of loss of balance (dizziness), headache,
tinnitus, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. A severe overdose can cause
rapid breathing (hyperventilation), difficulty breathing, heatstroke, sweating,
restlessness, tremors, hallucinations, decreased glucose, and possibly loss of consciousness
or coma.
If you forget to take CARDIORAL
If you have forgotten to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is time to
take the next dose.
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed capsule.
If you stop taking CARDIORAL
Do not stop taking CARDIORAL without your doctor's advice.
If you have any further questions about the use of CARDIORAL, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, CARDIORAL can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
If you notice any of the following symptoms, stop taking CARDIORAL and contact a
doctor immediately:
- Sudden shortness of breath or difficulty breathing;
- Swelling of the lips, face or body;
- Fainting
- Skin rashes or itching (especially all over the body). These may be symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.
- Unusual bleeding, such as blood in sputum, blood in vomit or urine, or dark-colored stools.
The most common side effects of CARDIORAL include
- Gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting, indigestion, occult or manifest bleeding causing anemia
- Stomach pain
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus), reduced hearing ability, headache, dizziness
Rare side effects
- Nosebleeds, gum bleeding, increased menstrual flow
- Asthma, nasal congestion (rhinitis)
Side effects with unknown frequency
- Prolongation of bleeding time
- Ulcers in the stomach or small intestine and perforation
- Intracranial hemorrhage
- Impairment of liver and kidney function
- High levels of uric acid in the blood
- Low levels of glucose in the blood
Reporting of side effects
If you get any side effects, even those not listed in this leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist.

5. How to store CARDIORAL
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not store at a temperature above 25 C.
- Store in the original packaging to protect the medicine from light and moisture.
- Do not use CARDIORAL after the expiry date indicated on the outer label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
- Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Package Contents and Other Information
What CARDIORAL contains
Each capsule contains 75 mg of the active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid.
The excipients are:
Omega-3 triglycerides, starch, citric acid, yellow wax (E901), hydrogenated coconut oil,
palm oil.
Capsule shell excipients: gelatin (E441),partially dehydrated liquid sorbitol (E
420), glycerol, corn starch .
Description of the appearance of CARDIORAL and package contents
CARDIORAL capsules are packaged in PentapharmAclar/Aluminum blisters and are
sold in packs of 30 soft capsules.
CARDIORAL capsules are contained in a round plastic bottle of 50 ml with a screw cap
containing a desiccant.
Each bottle contains 30 soft capsules.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
