1. What is Thiomed and what is it used for
Thiomed contains the active ingredient glutathione and belongs to a group of medicines that are used to
prevent nerve disorders (neuropathies) that may occur following the use of antitumor drugs such as
cisplatin or similar drugs, protecting nerve cells.
2. What you need to know before you use Thiomed
Do not use Thiomed
If you are allergic to Glutathione or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in
section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Thiomed.
Children
This medicine is not recommended for children as the effects in this age group are unknown.
Other medicines and Thiomed
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take
any other medicines.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Do not use this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary and only as
directed by your doctor, who will assess the benefits of treatment against the potential risks.
Driving and operating machinery
The medicine generally does not affect, or has a negligible effect on, the ability to drive and
operate machinery.
3. How to use Thiomed
Use this medicine following exactly the instructions of the doctor or nurse. If you have
any doubts, consult your doctor or nurse.
Adults
The recommended dose is 1-2 vials per day for intramuscular or slow intravenous
administration or for intravenous infusion.
The dosage is dependent on age, weight and health conditions and must be correlated with the dose and
administration schedule of the anticancer drug.
Method of use
Administration should occur within 15-30 minutes before the start of
administration of the anticancer drug.
- For intramuscular or intravenous bolus administration, the contents of the vial must be dissolved in the solvent present in the vial of water for injectable preparations included in the package.
- For administration by intravenous infusion, this solution must be further diluted in at least 20 ml of water for injectable preparations.
The reconstituted solution must be used immediately after preparation. The reconstituted
solution must be clear, colorless and free of visible particles and is for single and uninterrupted
administration only, and any residue must be discarded.
The medicine must not be mixed with other products as any incompatibilities are unknown.
All precautions must be taken to ensure sterility before and during
administration.
If you use more Thiomed than you should
If you think you have accidentally taken an excessive dose of Thiomed immediately inform your
doctor or go to the nearest hospital. Bring this leaflet with you.
If necessary, the doctor may resort to symptomatic treatments.
If you forget to take Thiomed
Since the injection will be administered by a nurse or doctor, it is unlikely that you will be
given an excessive dose or forget a dose. However, if you are concerned, talk to
your doctor.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or nurse.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Thiomed can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Below are listed the side effects of glutathione.
Not known(frequency cannot be estimated from available data):
- nausea, vomiting;
- allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), including skin rashes, appearance of swellings on the skin that cause itching (urticaria);
- headache;
- fever, pain and infection at the infusion site, formation of blood clots in the veins (venous thrombosis), inflammation of the veins at the infusion site and surrounding areas (venous phlebitis and extravasation with possible extravasal spread).
Reporting of side effects
If you get any side effects, even those not listed in this leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist. Side effects can also be reported directly through the national reporting system at
www.agenziafarmaco.gov.it/it/responsabili. Reporting side effects helps to provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
5. How to store Thiomed
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pack after “Exp.”. The expiry
date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of any medicine in the wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how
to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What Thiomed contains
- The active ingredient is glutathione. Each vial of powder contains 600 mg of glutathione (as sodium salt).
- The other component is water for injections, contained in the solvent vial.
Description of the appearance of Thiomed and contents of the pack
Thiomed is presented as a box containing vials of powder and vials of solvent for
injectable solution.
Packs of:
- 5 vials of 600 mg of glutathione with 5 solvent vials containing 4 ml of water for injections
- 10 vials of 600 mg of glutathione with 10 solvent vials containing 4 ml of water for injections
