INFORMATION ON Constipation
What you need to know
Constipation is defined as a reduction in the frequency of bowel movements to less than 3 times a
week.
This definition is not an absolute rule. In fact, the usual transit time (passage of food
through the intestine) and, therefore, the frequency of bowel movements vary considerably from one person
to another. Consequently, it is important to take into account the feeling of discomfort or problems
associated with this slowing of transit.
In the case of constipation, you may experience abdominal discomfort (stomach). Going to the toilet may be
difficult and even painful. The expulsion of stools seems incomplete. Stools are hard and scarce. Cramps or bloating may occur.
Occasional constipation is usually due to a change in daily habits (travel
abroad, dietary changes, stress, etc.) or "holding back".
Dietary habits and lifestyle (lack of physical activity) can also cause an imbalance in
bowel function, which can lead to constipation for a longer period of time (chronic constipation).

Other situations that can cause constipation are: some medications (some painkillers,
antidepressants, cough suppressants, aluminum-based antacids); in women: certain periods of the menstrual
cycle, pregnancy or menopause.
What can you do
Isolated episodes of constipation, even if unpleasant, are irrelevant..
In most cases, some simple lifestyle tips can help facilitate
intestinal transit and stool expulsion:
- Eat green vegetables high in fiber and fresh fruit, which facilitate transit. You can also eat gradually and without exaggerating bread or biscuits with bran or whole grains.
- Avoid foods that are too fatty and too sweet.
- Drink enough and regularly during the day (at least 1.5 liters/day): drink plenty of water, fruit juices and soups.
- Go to the bathroom at a fixed time (usually 30-60 minutes after meals) without straining too much to "push". Your body will get used to a regular schedule. It is also important to take your time.
- Don't forget to exercise and do physical exercise such as walking; these are great ways to combat constipation.
