1. What PerioChip is and what it is used for
What PerioChip is
PerioChip is a small chip that contains the antimicrobial agent chlorhexidine digluconate.
What PerioChip is used for
Most of us suffer from gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, during our
lifetime. Untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontitis with subsequent tooth loss.
Periodontitis is a disease characterized by inflammation and degeneration
of the tissues that support the teeth. To prevent it, it is necessary to treat gingivitis at an
early stage. If this does not happen, the gums are affected by a bacterial concentration known
as plaque and separate from the tooth, leading to the formation of a periodontal pocket.
When a pocket forms, plaque can increase and the disease worsens. Inserted by the dentist
into the periodontal pocket, PerioChip eliminates most of the bacteria responsible for
the disease and reduces the inflammation of the pocket, reducing its depth.
PerioChip is applied in combination with mechanical plaque removal in the
treatment of chronic periodontal inflammation in adults.
2. What you need to know before using PerioChip
Do not use PerioChip if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to chlorhexidine gluconate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
In rare cases PerioChip may cause serious allergic reactions, which can lead to a sudden
drop in blood pressure and even loss of consciousness. The first signs of a serious allergic
reaction may be skin reaction, difficulty breathing, itching, widespread swelling, feeling
lightheaded, rapid heartbeat, stomach upset or diarrhoea.
If you notice these symptoms, contact your dentist or doctor immediately (see section 4:
“Possible side effects”).
Children and adolescents:
PerioChip is not recommended for use in children and adolescents.
Other medicines and PerioChip
Tell your dentist if you are taking nistatin(to treat fungal infections) as it may
reduce the effectiveness of PerioChip. Tell your dentist if you are taking or have recently taken or
may take any other medicines, including those available without a prescription, even if
it is unlikely that problems will arise from taking other medicines.
PerioChip with food, drinks and alcohol
No changes to your diet are necessary while you are being treated with PerioChip.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant, suspect or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
with breast milk, you should inform your dentist. PerioChip should be avoided during pregnancy
and breastfeeding.
3. How to use PerioChip
After having mechanically cleaned your teeth removing as much plaque as possible, the dentist
will insert PerioChip into all the dental pockets that need to be treated. The chips dissolve
slowly over approximately 7 days and do not need to be removed.
The dentist may ask you to return within three months to verify the effectiveness of the
treatment and possibly continue it with the insertion of other PerioChip.
The dentist will advise you on any other necessary medications to take concurrently with
treatment with PerioChip.
During treatment, brush your teeth normally.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, PerioChip can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
If you experience any of the following reactions, consult a doctor immediately:
swelling, e.g. of the face, lips, tongue or throat; skin irritation; itching; wheezing
