1. What is ALTERGEN and what is it used for
ALTERGEN is a medicine that contains 2 active ingredients: hyaluronic acid and silver sulfadiazine.
Hyaluronic acid is a very important element for the human body: it is naturally
present for example in the skin, eye and cartilage, and accelerates the process of
wound healing.
Silver sulfadiazine is an antibiotic belonging to the class of sulfonamides, drugs
that kill some types of germs, ensuring protection against infections caused by them.
ALTERGEN is used to treat skin lesions such as sores, wounds due to
alterations in blood circulation (varicose ulcers) or burns.
Contact your doctor if you do not notice any improvement or if you notice a worsening of symptoms
after a short period of treatment.
2. What you need to know before using ALTERGEN
Do not use ALTERGEN:
- if you are allergic to silver sulfadiazine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- during pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless specifically indicated by your doctor;
- in premature babies and newborns in the first few months of life.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using ALTERGEN if:
- you have had allergic reactions after taking antibiotics belonging to the sulfonamide class;
- you have kidney problems (renal insufficiency) or liver problems (hepatic insufficiency).
If you use ALTERGEN for a long time and/or on large areas of the body, your doctor
may advise you to have blood tests to check the number of white blood cells.
Other medicines and ALTERGEN
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might
take any other medicines.
Do not use ALTERGEN at the same time as other medicines for local use (e.g. creams
or lotions) that contain proteolytic enzymes (which break down proteins), used for
example to treat burns.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, or if you
are breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking
this medicine.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use this medicine only if your doctor
considers it strictly necessary.
Driving and using machines
ALTERGEN does not impair the ability to drive vehicles or operate machinery.
3. How to use ALTERGEN
Use this medicine following exactly the instructions in this leaflet or as indicated by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
ALTERGEN is a medicine to be applied to the skin (topical use).
ALTERGEN cream
Apply a uniform layer of cream 2-3 mm thick to the entire lesion area, 1 or 2 times a day.
ALTERGEN impregnated gauzes
Apply 1 or more gauzes, depending on the extent of the lesions, 2 or more times a day.
If you use more ALTERGEN than you should
Cases of overdose are not known. However, if you use ALTERGEN on extensive areas of skin and/or for a very long period of time, the undesirable effects reported in paragraph 4 may occur.
If you forget to use Altergen
Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you stop using Altergen
Use ALTERGEN without interruption, until complete healing of the lesion (cicatrization).
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
The following side effects have been reported with the oral administration of sulfonamides, affecting the whole body (systemic):
- more or less sudden appearance of skin lesions, for example, patchy or widespread color changes (skin rashes);
- kidney problems (renal failure);
- liver inflammation (toxic hepatitis);
- changes in the blood, such as a decrease in certain types of white blood cells (agranulocytosis, leukopenia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia).
Such side effects are unlikely to occur with the use of ALTERGEN, as
ALTERGEN is applied directly to the affected area. However, if you use ALTERGEN on extensive areas of
skin and/or for a very long period of time, these effects may still occur.
