1. What is Valontan and what is it used for
Valontan contains the active ingredient dimenhydrinate.
It belongs to a group of medicines against vomiting called antiemetics and anti-nausea medications.
Valontan is used for the prevention and treatment of nausea, vomiting and dizziness
(loss of balance), typical of seasickness, car sickness, train sickness, and airsickness (travel sickness).
Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a short period of treatment.
2. What you need to know before taking Valontan
Do not take Valontan
- if you are allergic to dimenhydrinate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you are allergic to other related substances (other antihistamines);
- if it is for a child or adolescent;
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (see “Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility”).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Valontan .
Take Valontan only after consulting your doctor if:
- you have increased pressure inside the eye (glaucoma);
- you have an enlarged prostate (prostatic hypertrophy);
- you have difficulty urinating (urinary retention);
- you have problems with intestinal transit (intestinal obstruction);
- you have high blood pressure (arterial hypertension);
- you have cardiovascular diseases;
- you have breathing difficulties (bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema);
- you have an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism);
- you have epilepsy (seizures may worsen).
Also consult your doctor if these conditions have occurred in the past.
Children and adolescents
Valontan must not be used in children and adolescents.
Other medicines and Valontan
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicine.
Do not take Valontan if you are following therapy with medicines for depression, insomnia or
anxiety (antidepressants, hypnotics, sedatives or tranquillizers), to avoid their excessive reactivity-reducing
effect (sedation).
The concomitant use of Valontan and some antibiotics or other medicines that can be toxic to
the ear (ototoxic) may mask the first signs of toxicity (ototoxicity), which may become
evident only when the damage is irreversible.
Valontan with alcohol
Avoid the simultaneous use of alcoholic beverages.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding,
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Valontan must not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Use should also be avoided if you suspect you are pregnant or wish to plan a pregnancy.
If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor to decide whether it is appropriate to stop breastfeeding
and start treatment or, conversely, continue breastfeeding while avoiding taking the
medicine.
Driving and using machines
As the most frequent side effect of Valontan is reduced reactivity (sedation), which may manifest
as drowsiness, you must take this into account if you are performing operations that require
vigilance, such as driving vehicles and using machinery.
Valontan Adults 100 mg coated tablets contains sucrose
If your doctor has diagnosed you with intolerance to certain sugars, contact him before taking this
medicine.
3. How to take Valontan
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions in this leaflet or as indicated by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose to control nausea and vomiting in motion sickness (sea, car, train, plane) is half a Valontan tablet (50 mg), whose effect lasts approximately 4 hours; this dose may be repeated if necessary, for prevention purposes, every 4 hours up to a maximum of 3 tablets in 24 hours.
Do not exceed the indicated doses.
Use in children and adolescents
Valontan should not be used in children and adolescents.
If you take more Valontan than you should
In case of accidental ingestion/intake of an excessive dose of Valontan, immediately inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
The most common symptom in case of overdose is drowsiness. Toxic doses can cause convulsions, coma and respiratory problems.
If you forget to take Valontan
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you stop taking Valontan
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
With the use of Valontan, the following side effects may occur:
More common side effects:
- drowsiness
- reduced reactivity (sedation)
Common side effects:
- dry mouth
- nausea
- excessive sensitivity to light (photosensitivity)
- allergic skin reactions
- accommodation disorder of the eye (impaired vision)
- difficulty urinating
- headache (cephalalgia)
- decreased appetite (anorexia)
Less common side effects:
- loss of balance (dizziness)
- tremors
- convulsions (these can occur especially at high doses)
- decreased ability to make muscular efforts (asthenia)
- insomnia
- euphoria
- decreased blood pressure (hypotension)
- increased heart rate (tachycardia).

5. How to store Valontan
This medicine does not require any particular storage conditions.
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date that is reported on the pack after the words “Exp”.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of any medicine in waste water or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of
medicines that you no longer use. This will help to protect the environment.

- The active ingredient is: dimenhydrinate. One coated tablet contains 100 mg of dimenhydrinate.
- The other ingredients are: sucrose, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, corn starch. Tablet coating: acrylic resin (Eudragit), talc.

Valontan is available in the form of coated tablets, for oral use.
It is available in packs of 4 and 10 coated tablets of 100 mg.
