1. What is SURSUM and what is it used for
SURSUM contains vitamin E.
SURSUM is indicated:
- in conditions characterized by vitamin E deficiency, caused by insufficient absorption of nutrients from food during digestion;
- in conditions where it is necessary to prevent excessive production of free radicals.
2. What you need to know before you take SURSUM
Do not take SURSUM
- if you are allergic to vitamin E or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking SURSUM.
In particular, tell your doctor if:
- you are already being treated with digitalis (medicine for treating heart disease) or insulin (medicine for treating diabetes). In such cases, your doctor may subject you to blood tests (see section 2 “Other medicines and SURSUM”);
- you suffer from a vitamin K deficiency (involved in the blood coagulation process). If you take doses of vitamin E higher than 800 mg per day (equivalent to 800 IU) for a prolonged period, you may be more prone to bleeding. Therapeutic use of tocopherol is associated with an increased risk of reduced blood flow to the brain caused by a haemorrhage (haemorrhagic stroke).
Other medicines and SURSUM
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other
medicine.
In particular, tell your doctor if you are taking:
- warfarin, anticoagulants, thrombolytics or platelet aggregation or haemostasis inhibitors, which are medicines to make the blood more fluid. Vitamin E may increase the risk of bleeding
- digitalis, a medicine for treating heart disease
- insulin, a medicine for treating diabetes as vitamin E may increase the action of these medicines.
- Vitamin A
- vitamin K (involved in blood coagulation processes)
as vitamin E taken in high doses can reduce the absorption of these vitamins.
