I AM TAKING SODIO VALPROATO AUROBINDO AND I AM PLANNING A
PREGNANCY
If you are planning to have a baby, make an appointment with your doctor first.
Do not stop taking Sodio Valproato Aurobindo or your contraceptive, unless you have
discussed this with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to give you further advice.
Children born to mothers treated with valproate have a high risk of birth defects and developmental
problems that can be severely disabling. Your doctor will refer you to a specialist
experienced in the management of epilepsy, in order to evaluate alternative therapeutic options immediately. The
specialist may take various measures to facilitate the course of pregnancy as much as possible and reduce
risks for you and the baby.
The specialist may decide to change the dose of Sodio Valproato Aurobindo or switch to another
medicine, or to stop treatment with Sodio Valproato Aurobindo well before
pregnancy, in order to ensure that the condition is stable.
Ask your doctor for advice on taking folic acid when planning to have a baby.
Folic acid can reduce the overall risk of spina bifida and miscarriage, which are possible in all pregnancies.
However, it is unlikely to reduce the risk of birth defects associated with the use of valproate.
Key messages:
- Do not stop taking Sodio Valproato Aurobindo unless your doctor has told you to.
- Do not stop using birth control (contraceptives) before discussing this with your doctor and agreeing on a plan to ensure control of your condition and reduce risks to the baby.
- Make an appointment with your doctor first. During this visit, the doctor will ensure that you are fully aware and have understood all the risks and advice related to the use of valproate during pregnancy.
- Your doctor will try to change your medicine or stop treatment with Sodio Valproato Aurobindo well before pregnancy.
- Seek urgent advice from your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
I AM TAKING SODIO VALPROATO AUROBINDO AND I HAVE BECOME PREGNANT
Do not stop taking Sodio Valproato Aurobindo unless your doctor has established it, because
your condition may worsen. Seek urgent advice from your doctor if you are pregnant or believe you may be
pregnant. Your doctor will be able to give you further advice.
Children born to mothers treated with valproate have a high risk of birth defects and developmental
problems that can be severely disabling.
You will be referred to a specialist experienced in the management of epilepsy, in order to evaluate alternative
therapeutic options.
In exceptional circumstances, if Sodio Valproato Aurobindo is the only treatment option available in
pregnancy, you will be closely monitored both for the management of your underlying condition and
to monitor fetal development. You and your partner may receive advice and support
regarding exposure to valproate during pregnancy.
Ask your doctor for advice on taking folic acid. Folic acid can reduce the risk
generally of spina bifida and miscarriage, which are possible in all pregnancies. However, it is unlikely to reduce the risk
of birth defects associated with the use of valproate.
Key messages:
- Do not stop taking Sodio Valproato Aurobindo unless your doctor has told you to.
- Make sure you are referred to a specialist experienced in the treatment of epilepsy, to assess the need for alternative treatment options.
- You must receive detailed advice on the risks of Sodio Valproato Aurobindo during pregnancy, including teratogenicity and effects on development in children.
- Make sure you are referred to a specialist in prenatal monitoring, to identify possible cases of malformation.
Make sure you read the Patient Guide you will receive from your doctor. Your doctor will discuss the
Annual Risk Acceptance Form with you and ask you to sign and keep it. The Patient Card is
included in the packaging, to remind you of the risks of valproate in pregnancy.
Breastfeeding
As only small amounts of Sodio Valproato Aurobindo pass into breast milk, there is generally no
risk to the baby and weaning is not normally necessary. However, talk to your doctor
to assess whether to breastfeed your baby.
Driving and operating machinery
Sodio Valproato Aurobindo can cause drowsiness or dizziness in some people, especially at the beginning of
treatment or when taken with other antiepileptic drugs or benzodiazepines. Make sure you know
how you react to Sodio Valproato Aurobindo before driving, using tools or machinery, or performing other
activities that could become dangerous if you feel sleepy or dizzy.
Sodio Valproato Aurobindo contains sodium
Sodio Valproato Aurobindo 300 mg
This medicine contains 27.8 mg of sodium (the main component of table salt) per tablet.
This is equivalent to 1.39% of the recommended maximum daily intake with the diet of an adult.
3. How to take Sodio Valproato Aurobindo
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor. If you have doubts, consult your
doctor or pharmacist.
Treatment with Sodio Valproato Aurobindo must be started and supervised by a doctor
specialized in the treatment of epilepsy or bipolar disorders.
Make sure to keep your regular appointments for check-ups. They are very important as the dose may
need to be adjusted.
The daily dosage is established by the doctor based on age and body weight; however, significant variations in
individual sensitivity to valproate should be taken into consideration.
The optimal dosage will be based primarily on the clinical response. Measurement of serum levels may
be considered as a complement to clinical monitoring in cases of poor seizure control or when
side effects are suspected. The therapeutic range effective for serum levels of valproic acid is usually
40-100 mg/liter (300-700 micromoles/liter).
Starting treatment with Sodio Valproato Aurobindo (oral use):
- If you are not taking other antiepileptic drugs, Sodio Valproato Aurobindo should ideally be increased implementing successive doses at intervals of 2-3 days to achieve an optimal dosage after one week.
- If you are taking another antiepileptic drug, Sodio Valproato Aurobindo must be gradually increased until the optimal dosage is reached after about 2 weeks and the other treatment must be gradually reduced until complete discontinuation.
- If you need a combination with other antiepileptic drugs, these must be reduced slowly (see paragraph 2 “Other medicines and Sodio Valproato Aurobindo”).
Practical considerations: administration of Sodio Valproato Aurobindo (oral use)
Dosage:
The initial daily dose is 10-15 mg/kg, then the doses should be progressively increased to
reach the optimal dosage which generally ranges from 20 to 30 mg/kg (see paragraph “Starting the
treatment with Sodio Valproato Aurobindo (oral use)”).
However, when adequate control of seizures is not achieved with this dosage, the doses may
be further increased; the doctor will keep you under strict control (that's why check-up appointments
are important) when daily doses are greater than 50 mg/kg (see paragraph 2).
- In children the usual dosage is about 30 mg/kg per day.
- In adults the usual dosage is between 20-30 mg/kg per day.
- Although pharmacokinetic parameters are modified in the elderly, they have not been considered clinically significant; the dosage should therefore be determined by the clinical response (seizure control).
Treatment of mania associated with bipolar disorders:
The daily dose must be established and monitored by the doctor.
Initial dose:
The recommended initial daily dose is 750 mg.
The dose should be increased as quickly as possible in order to reach the therapeutic dose

lowest with which the desired clinical effect is obtained.
Average daily dose:
The average daily dose usually ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 mg. In exceptional cases, the dose may be
further increased to 3,000 mg/day. The dose must be adjusted based on the individual clinical response.
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or
pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Method of administration:
Oral use.
The daily dosage can be taken in two separate doses.
Take Sodio Valproato Aurobindo for as long as your doctor deems necessary and until you are prescribed.
Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you think Sodio Valproato Aurobindo is too weak or too
strong.
If you take more Sodio Valproato Aurobindo than you should
An overdose of Sodio Valproato Aurobindo can be dangerous. Inform your doctor or go
immediately to the nearest hospital. The signs of acute intoxication usually manifest with coma,
muscle hypotonia, hyporeflexia, miosis, impaired respiratory function, metabolic acidosis.
However, symptoms may be variable and seizures have been reported in the presence of very high plasma levels. Cases of intracranial hypertension related to cerebral edema have been reported. The
hospital management of overdose must be symptomatic: gastric lavage, useful up to 10-12 hours after
ingestion and cardio-respiratory monitoring. Naloxone has been used successfully in some isolated cases.
If you forget to take Sodio Valproato Aurobindo
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Continue to take the medicine
as directed by your doctor. If you forget several doses, contact your doctor immediately.
If you stop taking Sodio Valproato Aurobindo
Do not change the doses or stop taking Sodio Valproato Aurobindo without first consulting
your doctor. Your condition may worsen if you stop treatment with Sodio Valproato
Aurobindo without consulting your doctor.
If you have any further questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
