1. What is CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA and what is it used for?
This medicine contains the active ingredient carbocisteine and belongs to a group of medicines
called mucolytics, which work by thinning the mucus in the airways, facilitating its elimination.
CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA is indicated to facilitate the elimination of mucus (mucolytic) in
acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory system.
2. What you need to know before you take CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA
Do not take CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA
- if you are allergic to carbocisteine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from a stomach or intestinal problem called a gastroduodenal ulcer;
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (See section “Pregnancy and breastfeeding”);
- if the person who needs to take this medicine is a child under 11 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA.
No phenomena of reduced efficacy of the medicine after prolonged treatment or
dependence (need to continue taking the medicine) with the use of CARBOCISTEINA IPSO
PHARMA are known.
Caution is recommended in elderly patients, asthmatic patients with a history of severe respiratory problems
, debilitated patients,those with a history of gastroduodenal ulcers or those taking
medicines known to cause gastrointestinal bleeding. You must stop treatment with
carbocisteine in case of gastrointestinal bleeding.
This medicine should not be used in association with cough suppressants and/or medicines that
inhibit bronchial secretion.
This medicine does not affect weight, so it can be taken if you are on a low-calorie diet
or if you suffer from diabetes.
Children
CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA should not be taken by children under 11 years of age
(see section “Do not take CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA”).
Other medicines and CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicines.
No disturbances caused by the association with medicines used for the treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract diseases (interactions) are known.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy
You should not take CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding
The use of CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA is not recommended if you are breastfeeding, because it is
not known whether this medicine passes into breast milk.
Driving and using machines
No information is available to establish the effect of this medicine on the ability to drive
vehicles and use machinery.
CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA contains aspartame
This medicine contains 30 mg of aspartame per sachet equivalent to 6 mg/g. Aspartame is a source of
phenylalanine. It may be harmful if you have phenylketonuria, a rare genetic disorder that causes
a build-up of phenylalanine because the body cannot process it correctly.
3. How to take CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose for adults is 1 sachet per day unless otherwise indicated by your doctor. The doctor will determine the duration of treatment and may decide to change the necessary dose and the frequency of administrations.
Instructions for use: Dissolve the contents of one sachet in about half a glass of water, mixing well.
Do not mix CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA with other products.
If you take more CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA than you should
In case of overdose, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain (gastralgia), skin irritation (skin reactions) and altered sensory perceptions (alterations of the sensory systems) may occur.
In case of accidental ingestion/intake of an excessive dose of this medicine, immediately notify your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
If you forget to take CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Irritations and skin diseases (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, blistering dermatitis, erythema multiforme, toxic skin eruption, skin rash, urticaria, erythema, dermatitis), possibly with spots, blisters or bubbles (exanthema, blistering exanthema/erythema), itching, swelling due to fluid retention around the mouth and eyes, with possible difficulty breathing (angioedema) (In such cases, discontinue treatment and consult your doctor to establish appropriate therapy);
- Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding (In such cases, discontinue treatment and consult your doctor to establish appropriate therapy);
- Dizziness;
- Flushing;
- Difficulty breathing (dyspnea).

If you get any side effects, even if not listed in this leaflet, tell your
doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly through the national
reporting system at www.aifa.gov.it/content/segnalazioni-reazioni-avverse . By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
5. How to store CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the packaging after “Exp”.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of
medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.

What CARBOCISTEINA IPSO PHARMA contains
- The active ingredient is carbocisteine lysine salt monohydrate: 1 sachet of 5 g contains 2.7 g of carbocisteine lysine salt.
- The other ingredients are: mannitol, anhydrous citric acid, povidone, aspartame (E951), cedar aroma, orange aroma, granular orange.
