1. What is BENALCON and what is it used for
BENALCON contains the active ingredient benzalkonium chloride which belongs to a group of medicines
called antiseptics and disinfectants that reduce or block the growth of bacteria.
BENALCON is indicated for cleaning and disinfecting skin whether intact or in the presence of superficial wounds of
small size.
See your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a few days of treatment.
2. What you need to know before using BENALCON
Do not use BENALCON
- if you are allergic to benzalkonium chloride or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using BENALCON.
This medicine should only be applied to the skin (external use).
Do not apply BENALCON to the eyes or to the inner part of the ear (middle ear) and to the mucous membranes
(lining of some organs and ducts communicating with the outside). Furthermore, this medicine should not
come into contact with the brain or with the membranes that cover the brain (meninges).
BENALCON should not be ingested or inhaled as serious consequences, including
fatal ones, may occur.
After applying this medicine to the skin, avoid exposure to the sun or sunlamps (artificial sources of
ultraviolet rays).
Do not use this medicine for prolonged treatments.
If you use BENALCON, especially for long periods of time, allergic reactions may occur
(sensitization phenomena). In this case, stop treatment and inform your doctor who will establish a
suitable therapy.
Other medicines and BENALCON
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other
medicines.
During treatment with BENALCON, avoid using other similar medicines at the same time
(disinfectants or detergents).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
If you are pregnant and breastfeeding, you can use this medicine.
Driving and operating machinery
This medicine does not alter the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Important information on some excipients
Benalcon contains essence based on bergamot which in turn contains geraniol, citral, limonene, linalool.
Geraniol, citral, limonene and linalool may cause allergic reactions.
3. How to use BENALCON
Use this medicine following exactly as stated in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Apply the medicine to the skin, using a little cotton wool, gauze or compresses. You can use the medicine
up to 2 times a day.
Do not dilute the medicine and do not exceed the indicated doses without consulting your doctor.
Use this medicine only for short periods of treatment.
If you use more BENALCON than you should
If you do not exceed the recommended doses, there is no risk of overdose.
Accidental ingestion of this medicine may cause nausea and vomiting. If you ingest large quantities
of BENALCON you may experience symptoms such as: difficulty breathing (dyspnea), bluish discoloration of the
skin (cyanosis), a feeling of suffocation (asphyxia), due to paralysis of the respiratory muscles,
reduction of brain activity (depression of the central nervous system), lowering of blood pressure
(hypotension), deep unconsciousness (coma).
In humans, the lethal dose is approximately 1-3 g.
In case of accidental ingestion/intake of an excessive dose of BENALCON, immediately
inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Burning or irritation of the skin (intolerance) may occur. These symptoms generally do not
require changes to the treatment.

doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly through the national reporting system at

By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of
this medicine.
5. How to store BENALCON
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the packaging after “Expiry”. The
expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Store the medicine in a tightly closed container, protected from light and heat.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of
medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What BENALCON contains
- The active ingredient is benzalkonium chloride. 100 ml of solution contains 0.175 g of benzalkonium chloride.
- The other ingredients are: essence based on bergamot (contains geraniol, citral, limonene, linalool), deionized water.

BENALCONis available in bottles of 200 ml or 1000 ml.
