information for you.
- Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again.

- This medicine has been prescribed only for you or for your child. Do not give it to other people, even if their symptoms are the same as yours, as it could be dangerous.

1. What is AZYTER and what is it used for
Azyter contains azithromycin, an antibiotic that belongs to the class of macrolides.
Azyter is used for the local therapy of some bacterial ocular infections in adults (including the
elderly) and in children from birth to 17 years of age.
- Purulent bacterial conjunctivitis,
- Trachomatous conjunctivitis (a particular eye infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydiatrachomatis, found or occurring in developing countries).
2. What you need to know before using AZYTER
DO NOT use Azyter
- If you are allergic to azithromycin, to any other antibiotic of the macrolide class, or to medium-chain triglycerides.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor, or the doctor treating your child, or your pharmacist or nurse before
using AZYTER.
Take special care with Azyter, especially
- In case of an allergic reaction, stop treatment and ask your doctor for advice.
- If you do not see any improvement within three days of starting therapy or if abnormal signs appear, ask your doctor for advice.
- Due to your eye infection, the use of contact lenses is not recommended.
This medicine is for exclusive ophthalmic use.
Do not inject, do not ingest
Other medicines and AZYTER
If you are taking any other medicine that needs to be used in the eye, you must:
apply the other ophthalmic medicine,
wait for 15 minutes,
apply Azyter last.
Inform your doctor or the doctor treating your child or your pharmacist if you are taking or have
recently taken or might use any other medicine.
Pregnancy
Azyter can be used during pregnancy.
Your doctor may prescribe this medicine when you are pregnant if they consider it necessary.
Breast-feeding
Limited data indicate that azithromycin is secreted in breast milk, this medicine can be used
during breast-feeding.
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breast-feeding,
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Driving and using machines
You may experience transient blurred vision after ocular administration of the medicine. Wait until
normal vision returns before driving or using machines.
3. How to use AZYTER
The intended route of administration for this medication is ocular (ophthalmic use).
Use this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or the doctor treating your child. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or the doctor treating your child or your pharmacist.
Dosage
The recommended dose in adults (including the elderly) and in children from birth to 17 years of age is one
drop twice a day in the eye(s) to be treated: one drop in the morning and one drop in the evening.
The duration of therapy is three days.
Thanks to the prolonged action of the drug, it is not necessary to continue the treatment beyond three
days even if you still have residual signs of your bacterial infection.
Route of administration
For correct administration of Azyter:
- wash your hands thoroughly before and after using the medication,
- instill one drop into the eye to be treated by looking upwards and gently lowering the lower eyelid,
- avoid touching the eye or eyelids with the tip of the single-dose container,
- dispose of the single-dose container after use. Do not store it for subsequent use.
DO NOT INJECT, DO NOT SWALLOW
If you forget to use Azyter
Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you stop using Azyter
Always consult your doctor if you are considering stopping the treatment.

4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
Immediately inform your doctor if any of the following symptoms occur after taking this medicine, as the symptoms may be serious.
Uncommon: may affect up to 1 in 100 people:
- severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face or throat (angioedema).
Not known: frequency cannot be estimated based on available data
- Severe skin reactions: skin rash, eruption, blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)), rash accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, swollen glands and an increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cells), appearance of rashes as small, itchy red bumps (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS)), widespread generalized erythema with scaling on large areas of the body (exfoliative dermatitis), rash characterized by the rapid appearance of areas of red skin studded with small pustules (small blisters filled with white/yellow liquid) (Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis (AGEP)). Stop taking azitromicina if you develop these skin symptoms and contact your doctor or seek immediate medical attention.
The following side effects have been observed with the administration of the product:
Very common: may affect more than 1 in 10 people
- transient eye discomfort (itching, burning, pain).
Common: may affect up to 1 in 10 people
- blurred vision,
- sensation of sticky eye,
- foreign body sensation.
Uncommon: may affect up to 1 in 100 people
- allergic reaction (hypersensitivity),
- inflammation of the conjunctiva (may be due to infections or allergy) (conjunctivitis),
- allergic inflammation of the conjunctiva (allergic conjunctivitis),
- inflammation of the cornea (keratitis),
- itching on the skin of the eyelids (eczema palpebrale),
- dryness, redness and swelling of the eyelids (palpebral edema),
- eye allergy,
- increased tearing, redness of the eyelids (erythema of the eyelid),
- redness of the conjunctiva (conjunctival hyperemia).
Reporting of side effects
If you experience any side effects, including those not listed in this leaflet, please inform your
doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly through the national reporting system at
https://www.aifa.gov.it/content/segnalazioni-reazioni-avverse. By reporting side effects you can help to
provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
5. How to store AZYTER
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the outer packaging and on the single-dose container.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
- Do not store at a temperature above 25ºC.
- Store the single-dose containers inside the sachetin order to protect them from light.
Dispose of the opened single-dose container, with any remaining solution, immediately after first use.
Do not store it for subsequent use.
Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What Azyter contains
- The active ingredient is azithromycin dihydrate. Each gram of solution contains 15 mg of azithromycin dihydrate equivalent to 14.3 mg of azithromycin. One single-dose container of 250 mg of solution contains 3.75 milligrams of azithromycin dihydrate.
- The other component is represented by medium chain triglycerides.
Description of the appearance of Azyter and contents of the pack
Azyter is an ophthalmic solution (eye drops, solution) presented in single-dose containers, each containing
0.25 g of product. It is a clear oily liquid, from colorless to slightly straw-colored.
The pack contains 6 single-dose containers in a sachet which are sufficient for one course of therapy.
