1. What is ABSORCOL and what is it used for

ABSORCOL is a medicine used to reduce elevated cholesterol levels.
ABSORCOL lowers total cholesterol levels, “bad” cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and
fats called triglycerides in the blood. ABSORCOL also increases levels of “good”
cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).
Ezetimibe, the active ingredient of ABSORCOL, works by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol
within the digestive system.
The decrease in cholesterol levels due to ABSORCOL is added to that due to
statins, a group of medicines that work by reducing cholesterol production by the
body itself.
Cholesterol is one of several fatty substances found in the bloodstream. Total cholesterol is composed mainly of LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol.
LDL cholesterol is often called “bad” cholesterol because it can accumulate in the walls of the
arteries forming plaques. Over time, this accumulation in the form of plaque can
lead to narrowing of the arteries. This narrowing can slow down or block the flow of
blood to vital organs such as the heart and brain. This blockage of blood flow can cause a
heart attack or stroke.
HDL cholesterol is often called “good” cholesterol because it helps prevent bad cholesterol from accumulating in the arteries and protects against heart disease.
Triglycerides are another form of fat present in the blood that can increase the risk of heart
disease.
It is used for patients who cannot control cholesterol levels by reducing cholesterol levels with diet alone. You should follow a diet to reduce cholesterol during
therapy with this medicine.

ABSORCOL is used in addition to your cholesterol-lowering dietif you

have:

  • an elevated blood cholesterol level (primary hypercholesterolemia  familial and non-familial heterozygous  )
  • together with a statin, when your cholesterol level is not adequately controlled with a statin alone
  • alone, when treatment with statins is not appropriate or is not tolerated
  • an inherited disease (homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) that increases cholesterol levels in the blood. You will also be prescribed a statin and you may be prescribed other treatments
  • an inherited disease (homozygous sitosterolemia, also known as phytosterolemia) that increases levels of plant sterols in the blood. If you have heart disease, ABSORCOL in combination with medicines to reduce cholesterol called statins reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, surgery to increase blood flow to the heart, or hospitalization for chest pain.

ABSORCOL does not help with weight loss.

2. What you need to know before taking ABSORCOL

specific medicinale prescribed.

  • you currently have liver problems
  • you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking ABSORCOL.

  • Tell your doctor about all medical conditions you have, including allergies.
  • Your doctor should prescribe a blood test before starting therapy with ABSORCOL together with a statin. This is to check how your liver is functioning.
