1. What is Emmetre and what is it used for
Emmetre contains etobromate piperazine as its active ingredient, belonging to the category of anticholinergic antispasmodic medicines.
These medicines work by relieving cramps and abdominal pain
by reducing the painful and repetitive contractions of the abdominal organs (spasms and spastic states).
Emmetre is used in cases of:
- abdominal pain caused by prolonged contractions of the stomach and intestinal muscles (spastic states, spasms and hypermotility of the gastrointestinal tract);
- abdominal pain associated with problems of the urinary and biliary tract (dyskinesias);
- premedication for examinations, i.e. as a drug that is administered before performing invasive examinations that can cause painful spasms such as gastroscopies, colonoscopies, cystoscopies, hysteroscopies, etc.);
- for the preparation and performance of various radiographic examinations.
2. What you need to know before you take Emmetre
Do not take Emmetre
- if you are allergic to etobromate piperazine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from enlargement of the prostate (prostatic hypertrophy) or other causes of urinary retention;
- if you have high pressure in the eye (glaucoma);
- if you suffer from blockage of the intestinal muscles (paralytic ileus) and other disorders of intestinal motility of an obstructive type;
- if you have inflammation of the intestine with lesions (severe ulcerative colitis) and if you have been diagnosed with an increase in the size of the colon (toxic megacolon).
The use of Emmetre is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Emmetre must not be administered to newborns or premature babies.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Emmetre.
The use of Emmetre is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding (see section Pregnancy
and breastfeeding).
Other medicines and Emmetre
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicines.
Do not take Emmetre if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- antihistamines, medicines used to relieve the symptoms of allergies;
- butyrophenones and phenothiazines, medicines used to treat mental disorders (psychoses);
- tricyclic antidepressants, medicines used to treat depression;
- amantadine, an antiviral medicine, also used to treat Parkinson's disease.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use this medicine only if
absolutely necessary and always under the direct supervision of your doctor.
Driving and using machines
Using this medicine does not impair the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
Emmetre injectable solution contains benzyl alcohol
This medicine contains 20 mg of benzyl alcohol per vial, which may cause allergic reactions.
Benzyl alcohol has been associated with the risk of serious side effects including breathing problems
(agonal respiratory syndrome) in young children.
Do not administer to infants under 4 weeks of age unless otherwise recommended by your doctor.
Do not use for more than one week in young children (under 3 years of age) unless otherwise
recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because large amounts
of benzyl alcohol can accumulate in the body and cause side effects (such as metabolic acidosis).
Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have a liver or kidney condition. This is because large
amounts of benzyl alcohol can accumulate in the body and cause side effects (such as metabolic
acidosis).
3. How to take Emmetre
Take this medicine following the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist exactly. If you have any
doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
This medicine will be administered to you by injection into a vein (intravenous route) or into the muscle
(intramuscular route) depending on your needs.
The recommended dose is 1 – 2 vials per day, unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.
If you take more Emmetre than you should
In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment should be initiated as there is no known specific antidote.
If you are concerned that you may have been given a dose of medicine higher than you should, inform your
doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.
If you forget to take Emmetre
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist, or your nurse.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Side effects may include:
Rare(may affect less than 1 in 1,000 people):
- dry mouth;
- visual disturbances.
These symptoms completely resolve and without any after-effects by reducing the doses or stopping the
treatment.

5. How to store Emmetre
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the packaging after “Expiry”.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to eliminate
medicines that you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What Emmetre contains
The active ingredient is etobromate piperanate. Each vial contains 10 mg of etobromate piperanate.
The other ingredients are: polyethylene glycol 300, benzyl alcohol and water for injectable preparations.

If your doctor has diagnosed you with intolerance to certain sugars, contact him or her before taking this
medicine.
9. How to take Emmetre
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. If you have
any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is 1 – 2 tablets a day, 2 to 4 times a day, unless otherwise prescribed
by your doctor.
Use in children
Emmetre should not be administered in early infancy.
If you take more Emmetre than you should
