1. What is Yomesan and what is it used for
Yomesan contains the active ingredient niclosamide, an antiparasitic substance that belongs to the group of
anthelmintic, anticestodal drugs, derivatives of salicylic acid.
This medicine is used for the treatment of the following tapeworm infestations in adults and children:
- infestations by Taenia saginata(beef tapeworm),
- infestations by Taenia solium(pork tapeworm),
- infestations by Diphyllobothrium latum(fish tapeworm),
- infestations by Hymenolepis nana(dwarf tapeworm).
2. What you need to know before taking Yomesan
Do not take Yomesan
- if you are allergic to niclosamide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Yomesan.
Yomesan eliminates the tapeworm present in the intestine.
Yomesan is not effective in cases of cysticercosis and echinococcosis, diseases caused by larvae of Taenia soliumand of
other parasites ( E. multiocularisor E. Granulosus) which are located and develop outside the intestine.
The absence of scoleces (the “head” of the tapeworm, with which it adheres to the intestinal wall) in the stool does not indicate that
Yomesan has not worked. After contact with the medicine, the parasites are damaged and may be
unrecognizable.
If you want a rapid expulsion of the entire body (strobila) of the tapeworm, you can administer, 2 hours after
taking the entire daily dose of Yomesan (or, in the case of the dwarf tapeworm, Hymenolepis nana, after the last
dose of treatment), a strong saline purgative (e.g. sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate) to promote
elimination of the parasite with liquid stools. It is possible that the scolex will not be found in the stool even
with a drastic purgative: in this case, the tapeworm will be eliminated in fragments during the following days.
If you do not take the purgative, you may find segments (proglottids) of tapeworm in your stool for about 2 days
after the end of treatment with Yomesan. After this period, you should no longer find either proglottids or
eggs. If you become reinfected with Taenia saginataor Taenia solium, scoleces or eggs will not appear in the stool
before 3 months.
Only if the parasite is the dwarf tapeworm ( Hymenolepis nana)is a 14-day observation period necessary, because
any surviving scoleces regenerate very quickly and form sexually mature parasites, which
begin to produce eggs in the stool as early as 10 days.
Yomesan has a lethal effect only on the adult parasite but not on the eggs; in case of infestation with Taenia solium
(tapeworm) it is essential to take a drastic purgative, this to avoid that, if adequate hygiene rules are not observed,
cysticercosis may develop, i.e. an infestation caused by the larval form of
the parasite by ingestion of the eggs. The purgative, in fact, aims to eliminate as quickly as possible the
final segments (proglottids) containing the mature eggs, before they are digested releasing the eggs
into the intestine.
Other medicines and Yomesan
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other
medicines, including those available without a prescription.
Yomesan with alcohol
During therapy, it is advisable to avoid drinking alcohol because the medicine is soluble in alcohol
which may increase its absorption.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy
Studies in animals do not indicate any direct or indirect adverse effects on reproductive toxicity.
As a precaution, during pregnancy, and especially during the first trimester, use this medicine only
when absolutely necessary.
Breastfeeding
It is not known whether niclosamide is excreted in human milk. If you are breastfeeding, your doctor will prescribe Yomesan only
after assessing the risk/benefit ratio.
Driving and using machines
Yomesan may impair the ability to drive or operate machinery, due to effects on the
central nervous system. See section 4.
3. How to take Yomesan

consult your doctor or pharmacist

Method of administration
Oral use.
The entire daily dose must be taken immediately after breakfast.
The chewable tablets, with a pleasant taste, must be chewed until reduced to a homogeneous paste
and then swallowed with a little water.
The tablets can also be crumbled into water and then ingested.
The elimination of intestinal mucus produced abundantly in tapeworm infections can be favored
by taking acidic fruit juices which allow easier access of the active ingredient to the tapeworm located below the
mucus.
In case of constipation, it is necessary to normalize intestinal peristalsis (muscle contraction of the digestive tract)
before taking Yomesan. No other dietary measures are necessary.
Special populations
Use in patients with reduced hepatic (liver) or renal function
Niclosamide is not absorbed in appreciable quantities by the gastrointestinal tract and does not interfere with the
function of the liver or kidneys. Therefore, no dosage adjustments are necessary in case of reduced hepatic or
renal function.
Use in children
For younger children, the tablets must be appropriately reduced to a homogeneous paste before
being administered with a little water.
If you use more Yomesan than you should
No cases of overdose have been reported.
If you accidentally take an excessive dose of Yomesan, immediately inform your doctor or go to the nearest
hospital.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
