information for you. Even if you have used Xalatan or a similar medicine before, it is recommended to read
this leaflet carefully. The information may have been changed.
- Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again.
- If you have any questions, ask your doctor or the doctor caring for your child, or your pharmacist.
- This medicine has been prescribed for you personally or for your child only. Never give it to others: it may be dangerous for other people, even if they have the same symptoms as you.
- If you get any side effects, even those not listed in this leaflet, tell your doctor or the doctor caring for your child, or your pharmacist. See section 4.

1. WHAT IS Xalatan AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
Xalatan belongs to the category of medicines known as prostaglandin analogues. Xalatan
works by increasing the natural outflow of fluid from inside the eye into the bloodstream.
Xalatan is used in the treatment of conditions known as open-angle glaucomaand
ocular hypertensionin adults. Both of these conditions are related to an increase in
intraocular pressure, ultimately altering vision.
Xalatan is also used in the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure and glaucoma in
children of all ages and infants.
2. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE USING Xalatan
Xalatan can be used in adult women and men (including the elderly) and in children
from birth to 18 years. The use of Xalatan in premature infants (with a gestational age of less than 36
weeks) has not been investigated.
Do not use Xalatan
- If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to latanoprost or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
- If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
- If you are breastfeeding.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or the doctor caring for your child, or your pharmacist before using
Xalatan or before giving this medicine to your child if you think that any of the following conditions
apply to you or your child:
- If you or your child are about to undergo or have undergone eye surgery (including cataract surgery)
- If you or your child has eye problems (such as eye pain, irritation or inflammation, blurred vision)
- If you or your child suffers from dry eyes
- If you or your child has severe asthma or if asthma is not well controlled
- If you or your child uses contact lenses. You can still use Xalatan by following the instructions for contact lens wearers in section 3
- If you have suffered or are currently suffering from a viral eye infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Other medicines and Xalatan
Xalatan can interact with other medicines. Tell your doctor or the doctor caring for your
child, or your pharmacist if you or your child is taking or has recently taken any other
medicines, including medicines (or eye drops) without a prescription.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not use Xalatanduring pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, if you think you may be pregnant, or if you are planning a
pregnancy.
Driving and using machines
When using Xalatan you may experience transient blurred vision. If this happens, do not
driveor use equipment or machinery until your vision is clear again.
Xalatan contains benzalkonium chloride
Xalatan contains a preservative called benzalkonium chloride. This preservative can cause
eye irritation or abrasion of the eye surface. Benzalkonium chloride can be absorbed
by contact lenses and is known to cause a change in the color of soft contact lenses. You should
therefore avoid contact of the medicine with soft contact lenses.
If you or your child wears contact lenses, you should remove them before applying Xalatan.
After applying Xalatan, you should wait 15 minutes before putting your contact lenses back in. For
instructions for contact lens wearers, see section 3.
3. HOW TO USE XALATAN
Use Xalatan exactly as your doctor or the doctor caring for your child has told you. If you have
any doubts, consult your doctor or the doctor caring for your child or your pharmacist.
The usual dose in adults (including the elderly) and in children is one drop once a day
in the eye(s) to be treated. The optimal time for administration is in the evening.
Do not use Xalatan more than once a day, as the effectiveness of the treatment may be reduced if the
medicine is administered more frequently.
Use Xalatan as your doctor, or the doctor caring for your child, has instructed you, until the
doctor tells you to stop the treatment.
Contact Lens Wearers
If you or your child wear contact lenses, you must remove them before applying Xalatan.
After applying Xalatan, you must wait 15 minutes before re-applying the contact lenses.
Instructions for Use
- 1. Wash your hands and sit, or stand, comfortably.
- 2. Remove the outer cap with a slight twist (the outer cap can be discarded).
- 3. Unscrew the inner protective cap. The protective cap
must be kept.
- 4. Gently pull down the lower eyelid
of the eye to be treated.
- 5. Position the tip of the bottle close to the eye without touching it.
- 6. Apply slight pressure to the bottle so that only one drop goes into the eye, then release the lower eyelid.
- 7. Press with a finger on the inner corner of the affected eye. Wait one minute with your eyes closed.
- 8. Repeat the operation in the other eye as well, if your doctor has told you to do so.
- 9. Close the bottle with the inner protective cap.
If you are using Xalatan with another eye drop
Wait at least 5 minutes between administering Xalatan and administering another eye drop.
If you use more Xalatan than you should
Putting too many drops in your eyes may lead to mild irritation, tearing, and redness
of the eyes. These effects should be transient, but if you are concerned, contact your doctor or the
doctor caring for your child for advice.
Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you or your child have accidentally ingested Xalatan.
If you forget to use Xalatan
Continue to take the usual dose at the usual time. Do not use a double dose to make up for the
missed dose. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
If you stop using Xalatan
You should inform your doctor or the doctor caring for your child if you intend to stop
treatment with Xalatan.
4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medicines, Xalatan can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following are known adverse events with the use of Xalatan:
Very common(may affect more than 1 in 10 people):
- Gradual change in eye color due to an increase in the amount of brown pigment in the colored part of the eye called the iris. This change is more likely to occur if your eyes have a mixed color (blue-brown, grey-brown, yellow-brown or green-brown) rather than a uniform color (blue, grey, green or brown). Any change in eye color may occur after years, although it generally appears within the first 8 months of treatment. The change in color may be permanent and may be more noticeable if you use Xalatan in only one eye. There do not appear to be any problems associated with the change in eye color. After stopping treatment with Xalatan, no further change in eye color has been observed.
- Red eyes.
- Eye irritation [sensation of burning, feeling of grit, itching, stinging pain (sensation of pinpricks) or feeling of a foreign body in the eyes]. If you experience irritation severe enough to produce excessive tearing in your eyes, or to induce discontinuation of the medicine, contact your doctor, pharmacist or nurse immediately (within one week). An update of the therapy may be necessary to ensure adequate treatment for your condition.
- Gradual change in the eyelashes of the treated eye and change in the fluff around the treated eye, observed mostly in people of Japanese origin. These changes include an increase in darkening, lengthening, thickening and densifying of the eyelashes.
Common(may affect less than 1 in 10 people):
Irritation or abrasion of the eye surface, inflammation of the eyelid margin (blepharitis),
eye pain, sensitivity to light (photophobia), conjunctivitis.
Uncommon(may affect up to 1 in 100 people):
Swelling of the eyelids, dry eye, inflammation or irritation of the surface
of the eye (keratitis), blurred vision, inflammation of the colored part of the eye
(uveitis), swelling of the retina (macular edema).
Skin rash.
Chest pain (angina), awareness of heartbeat (palpitations).
Asthma, shortness of breath (dyspnea).
Chest pain.
Headache, dizziness.
Muscle pain, joint pain.
Rare(may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
Inflammation of the iris (iritis), symptoms related to swelling or abrasion/damage
to the eye surface, swelling of the area around the eyes (periorbital edema), altered
orientation of the eyelashes or abnormal eyelash growth, scarring of the surface
of the eye, fluid-filled area in the colored part of the eye (iris cyst).
Skin reactions on the eyelids, darkening of the skin of the eyelids.
Worsening of asthma.
Severe itching of the skin.
Development of a viral infection of the eye caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Very rare(may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):
Worsening of angina in patients already suffering from heart disease, sunken appearance of the eye
(hollowing of the eye socket).
The side effects observed more frequently in children compared to adults were:
runny and itchy nose, fever.
In very rare cases, some patients with severe damage to the transparent layer in the front
of the eye (the cornea) have developed cloud-like spots on the cornea, due to
calcium accumulation during treatment.

5. HOW TO STORE XALATAN
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use Xalatan after the expiry date which is stated on the outer packaging and the bottle. The
expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
Before opening, store the bottle at room temperature (do not store at a temperature
above 25°C), protected from light.
After first opening, store the bottle at room temperature (do not store at a
temperature above 25°C) and use within 4 weeks of first opening. When not using
Xalatan, keep the bottle in the outer packaging to protect it from light.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to
dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. PACKAGE CONTENTS AND OTHER
INFORMATION
What Xalatan contains
The active ingredient is latanoprost 50 micrograms/ml.
The excipients are: benzalkonium chloride, sodium chloride, sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate (E339a)
and disodium phosphate anhydrous (E339b), dissolved in water for injectable preparations.
Description of the appearance of Xalatan and contents of the pack
Xalatan eye drops, solution is a colorless, clear liquid.
Xalatan is available in packs of 1, 3 and 6 cases. Not all pack sizes may be
marketed.
Each case contains a bottle of Xalatan. Each bottle contains 2.5 ml of Xalatan eye drops,
solution.
