1. What is Paroxetina Teva Italia and what is it used for

Paroxetina Teva Italia is a medicine for the treatment of depression and/or anxiety disorders
in adults.The anxiety disorders treated with this medicine are: obsessive-compulsive disorder
(repetitive and obsessive thoughts with uncontrollable behaviour); panic disorder (panic attacks,
including those caused by agoraphobia, i.e. fear of open spaces); social anxiety disorder (fear
or avoidance of social situations); post-traumatic stress disorder (anxiety caused by a traumatic event);
generalized anxiety disorder (general feeling of great anxiety or nervousness).
Paroxetina Teva Italia belongs to a group of medicines called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitors). It is not fully known how this medicine and other SSRIs work, but they may help to increase
levels of serotonin in the brain. Treating depression or anxiety disorders adequately is important to help
you feel better.

2. What you need to know before taking Paroxetina Teva Italia

Do not take Paroxetina Teva Italia

• if you are taking medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors(MAOIs, including moclobemide and methylthioninium chloride [methylene blue]), or if you have taken them at any time in the last two weeks. Your doctor will advise you on how to start treatment with Paroxetina Teva Italia once you have stopped taking MAOIs;
• if you are taking an antipsychoticcalled thioridazine or an antipsychotic called pimozide;
• if you are allergicto paroxetine, to soya, to peanuts or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6). If any of these apply to you, tell your doctor before taking this medicine.

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Paroxetina Teva Italia

• Are you taking any other medicines? (see Other medicines and Paroxetina Teva Italiain
• Are you taking tamoxifen for breast cancer treatment or for fertility problems? Paroxetina Teva Italia may make tamoxifen less effective, so your doctor may recommend that you take another antidepressant.
• Do you have problems with your kidneys, liver or heart?
• Do you have an abnormality on your heart tracing after an electrocardiogram (ECG) known as a prolonged QT interval?
• Do you have a family history of prolonged QT interval, heart disease such as heart failure, low heart rate or low levels of potassium or magnesium?
• Do you suffer from epilepsy or have you had fits or convulsions in the past?
• Have you ever had episodes of mania (hyperactive behaviour or thoughts)?
• Are you undergoing electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)?
• Have you had bleeding disorders in the past or are you taking other medicines that may increase the risk of bleeding (these include medicines used to make the blood thinner, such as warfarin, antipsychotics such as perphenazine or clozapine, tricyclic antidepressants, medicines used for pain and inflammation called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs, such as acetylsalicylic acid, ibuprofen, celecoxib, etodolac, diclofenac, meloxicam)?
• Do you have diabetes?
• Are you following a low sodium diet?
• Do you have glaucoma (pressure in the eye)?
• Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant? (see Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
• Are you under 18 years of age? (see Children and adolescents under 18 yearsin this

If you have answered YES to any of these questionsand have not already discussed it with your doctor, go back
to your doctor and ask what to do about taking Paroxetina Teva Italia.
Children and adolescents under 18 years
Paroxetina Teva Italia should not be used in children and adolescents under the
age of 18 years.In addition, patients under 18 years of age have an increased risk of undesirable effects
such as suicide attempts, suicidal thoughts and hostility (predominantly aggression, oppositional behaviour and anger) when taking paroxetine. If your doctor has prescribed this medicine to you
(or to your child) and you want to discuss it, go back to your doctor. You should also inform your doctor if any of
the above symptoms appear or worsen while you (or your child) are taking this
medicine. Furthermore, the long-term safety effects of paroxetine on growth, maturation and cognitive and behavioural development in this age group have not yet been
demonstrated.
In studies conducted with paroxetine in patients under 18 years of age, common undesirable effects that
affected less than 1 child/adolescent in 10 were: increased thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts, deliberately hurting themselves, hostile, aggressive or unfriendly attitude,
loss of appetite, tremors, abnormal sweating, hyperactivity (having too much energy), agitation,
changes in emotions (including crying and mood swings) and unusual bruising or bleeding
(such as nosebleeds). These studies also showed that the same symptoms affected
children and adolescents who were taking sugar pills (placebo) instead of paroxetine, although they were
observed less frequently.
In these studies conducted in patients under 18 years of age, some patients experienced discontinuation effects
after stopping paroxetine. These effects were mostly similar to those observed
in adults after stopping paroxetine (see section 3). In addition, patients under the
age of 18 years also commonly had (in less than 1 in 10 cases) stomach pain, feeling
nervous and changes in emotions (including crying, mood swings, attempts to hurt themselves, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts).

Suicidal thoughts and worsening of depression or anxiety
If you are depressed or suffer from anxiety, you may sometimes have thoughts of harming yourself or of ending your life. These may increase when you start taking antidepressants for the first time, as
all these medicines take time to work, usually about two weeks but sometimes longer.

You may be more likely to have these thoughts:

• if you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life in the past;
• if you are a young adult. Information from clinical trials has shown an increased risk of suicidal behaviour in young adults under 25 years of age with psychiatric disorders treated with an antidepressant.

If at any time you think of harming yourself or ending your life, contact your doctor or go
straight to hospital.
It may help to tell a relative or close friendthat you are depressed or anxious and to ask them to
inform you if they think your depression or anxiety is getting worse, or if they are
worried about changes in your behaviour.

Important undesirable effects observed with Paroxetina Teva Italia
Some patients taking this medicine develop a condition called akathisia, in which they

feel restless and have a need to keep moving.Other patients
develop what is called serotonin syndrome or neuroleptic malignant syndrome, in
which they experience some or all of the following symptoms: feeling strongly agitated or irritable, feeling
confused, feeling restless, feeling hot, sweating, trembling, shivering,
hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there), muscle rigidity, sudden muscle spasms or a fast heartbeat. The severity can increase, leading to loss of consciousness. If you notice any of these
symptoms, contact your doctor. For more information about these or other undesirable effects of this
medicine, see section 4.
Medicines like Paroxetina Teva Italia (called SSRIs) can cause symptoms of sexual dysfunction (see section 4). In some cases, these symptoms have continued after stopping
treatment.

Other medicines and Paroxetina Teva Italia
Some medicines can affect the activity of Paroxetina Teva Italia or may make undesirable effects more
likely. Paroxetina Teva Italia can also affect the activity of other medicines. These include:

• Medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors(MAOIs, including moclobemide and methylthioninium chloride [methylene blue]). See Do not take Paroxetina Teva Italiain this
• Medicines known to increase the risk of changing the electrical activity of the heart (e.g. the antipsychoticsthioridazine or pimozide) - see Do not take Paroxetina Teva Italiain this leaflet.
• Acetylsalicylic acid, ibuprofen or other medicines called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as celecoxib, etodolac, diclofenac and meloxicam, used for the treatment of pain and inflammation
• Tramadol, buprenorphine and pethidine, painkillers
• Buprenorphine in combination with naloxone, substitute treatment for opioid dependence
• Medicines called triptans, such as sumatriptan, used to treat migraine
• Other antidepressantsincluding other SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants such as clomipramine, nortriptyline and desipramine
• A food supplementcalled tryptophan
• Mivacurium and suxamethonium (used in anaesthesia)
• Medicines such as lithium, risperidone, perphenazine, clozapine (called antipsychotics) used to treat some psychiatric illnesses
• Fentanyl, used in anaesthesiaor for the treatment of chronic pain
• A combination of fosamprenavir and ritonavir, used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection
• St John’s Wort, a herbal preparation for depression
• Phenobarbital, phenytoin, sodium valproate or carbamazepine, used for the treatment of convulsionsor epilepsy
• Atomoxetine, used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
• Procyclidine, used to control tremor, especially in Parkinson’s disease
• Warfarin or other medicines (called anticoagulants) used to make the blood thinner
• Propafenone, flecainide and medicines used to treat irregular heartbeat
• Metoprolol, a beta-blocker used for the treatment of high blood pressureand heart problems
• Pravastatin, used for the treatment of high cholesterol
• Rifampicin, used for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB)and leprosy
• Linezolid, an antibiotic
• Tamoxifen, used for the treatment of breast cancer or for fertility problems.

If you are taking or have recently taken any of the medicines in this listand have not yet
spoken to your doctor, go back to your doctor and ask what to do.You may need to change the
dose or use another medicine.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take
any other medicines,including those available without a prescription.

Paroxetina Teva Italia with food, drinks and alcohol
Do not drink alcohol while you are being treated with this medicine. Alcohol can worsen your symptoms or
undesirable effects. Taking this medicine in the morning, with food, will reduce the likelihood
of feeling nauseous.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you think you may be pregnant or are planning to
become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. In children
whose mothers had taken paroxetine in the first few months of pregnancy, there have been some reports
showing an increased risk of birth defects, particularly heart defects. In the general
population, about 1 in 100 babies is born with a heart defect. This increased to 2 babies in 100
in the case of mothers who had taken paroxetine. You and your doctor can decide whether it is better for you
to switch to another treatment or to gradually stop taking this medicine while you
are pregnant. However, depending on the circumstances, your doctor may advise you that it is better for
you to continue taking this medicine.

Make sure that your midwife and/or doctor know that you are being treated with Paroxetina Teva
Italia.If you take this medicine shortly before the end of pregnancy, there could be
an increased risk of heavy vaginal bleeding shortly after delivery, especially if you have a history of bleeding disorders. Your doctor or midwife should be informed that you are taking this medicine, in
order that they can advise you what to do. When taken during pregnancy, particularly in
late pregnancy, medicines like Paroxetina Teva Italia can increase the risk of a serious
condition in babies, called persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). In PPHN the
blood pressure in the blood vessels between the heart and the lungs of the baby is too high. If you take
this medicine in the last 3 months of pregnancy, your newborn baby may also have other
conditions, which usually appear within the first 24 hours of life after birth. The symptoms
include:

• breathing problems;
• bluish skin or a temperature that is too high or too low;
• blue lips;
• vomiting or not being able to feed properly;
• feeling very tired, sleeplessness or excessive crying;
• stiff or floppy muscles;
• tremors, agitation or convulsions;
• exaggerated reflexes.

If your baby develops one or more of these symptoms after birth, or if you are worried about
your baby’s health, contact your doctor or midwife who will advise you what to do.

Paroxetina Teva Italia may pass into breast milk in very small amounts.If you are taking
this medicine, return to your doctor and talk to him before starting to breastfeed. You and your
doctor can decide whether you can breastfeed while taking this medicine.
In animal studies, paroxetine has been shown to reduce sperm quality. In theory, this could
affect fertility, but the impact on human fertility has not yet been observed.

Driving and operating machinery
Possible side effects of this medicine include dizziness, confusion, feeling
sleepy or blurred vision. If you experience these side effects, do not drive vehicles and do not
operate machinery.

Paroxetina Teva Italia contains sodium
This medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) of sodium per tablet, i.e. essentially
“sodium-free”.

Paroxetina Teva Italia contains soy lecithin
This medicine contains soy lecithin. If you are allergic to peanuts or soy, do not use this
medicine.

3. How to take Paroxetina Teva Italia

Take this medicine always exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you have
doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Sometimes you may need to take more than one or half a tablet. The table shows how many
tablets to take.
The usual doses for the different conditions are reported in the following table.

Your doctor will advise you which dose to take at the beginning of treatment with Paroxetina Teva Italia.
Most people start to feel better after a couple of weeks. If you do not start to
feel better after this period of time, talk to your doctor, who will be able to advise you. The doctor may
decide to increase the dose gradually, by 10 mg at a time, up to the maximum daily dose.

Take the tablets in the morning, with food.
Swallow the tablets with a glass of water.
Do not chew the tablets.
The tablet can be divided into equal doses.
Your doctor will tell you how long you will need to continue taking the tablets. The treatment
may last for many months or even longer.

Elderly people
The maximum dose for people over 65 years of age is 40 mg per day.

Patients with liver or kidney problems
If you have liver problems or severe kidney disease, your doctor may decide to prescribe you a dose of
this medicine lower than normal.

If you take more Paroxetina Teva Italia than you should
Never take more tablets than recommended by your doctor. If you (or someone else) takes a
excessive amount of Paroxetina Teva Italia, seek immediate medical attention or go to a hospital, and show them the
package of the tablets.
Someone who has taken an overdose of Paroxetina Teva Italia may experience any of the symptoms
listed in paragraph 4 Possible side effects, or the following symptoms: fever, uncontrollable muscle stiffness.

If you forget to take Paroxetina Teva Italia
Take the medicine every day at the same time.
If you forget to take a dose and remember before going to bed, take it immediately. Continue
then as usual the next day.
If you only remember during the night or the next day, skip the missed dose. You may experience
withdrawal symptoms, which should disappear as soon as you take the next dose at the usual
time.
Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

What to do if you don't feel better
Paroxetina Teva Italia will not immediately relieve your symptoms. All antidepressants need
time to work. Some people will start to feel better within a couple of weeks, but for others
it may take a little longer. Some people who take antidepressants feel worse before they feel better. If you do not start to feel better after a couple of weeks, go
back to your doctor who will be able to advise you. The doctor should ask to review you a couple of weeks after
the start of treatment. Tell your doctor if you have not started to feel better.

If you stop taking Paroxetina Teva Italia
Do not stop taking Paroxetina Teva Italia until your doctor tells you that you can.

When you stop taking Paroxetina Teva Italia,your doctor will help you to reduce the dose
slowly, over a few weeks or months. This should help to reduce the possibility that
withdrawal effects appear. One way to do this is to gradually reduce the dose of this
medicine by 10 mg per week. Most people find that the withdrawal symptoms of this medicine are mild and disappear on their own within two weeks. For some
people, these symptoms may be more severe or last longer.

If you experience withdrawal effectsduring the period of stopping treatment, your doctor may
decide that you need to stop more slowly. If you experience severe withdrawal effects when
stopping taking this medicine, contact your doctor.
They may ask you to start taking the tablets again and stop them more slowly.

If you experience withdrawal effects, you will still be able to stop treatment with
Paroxetina Teva Italia.
Possible withdrawal effects when stopping treatment
Studies show that 3 out of 10 patients notice one or more symptoms when stopping paroxetine.
Some withdrawal effects occur more frequently than others when stopping.

Common undesirable effects
These can affect up to 1 in 10 people

• Sensations of dizziness, instability or loss of balance
• Sensations of pins and needles, burning sensations and (less commonly) electric shock sensations, even in the head, and ringing, buzzing, whistling, tingling or other persistent noise in the ear (tinnitus)
• Sleep disturbances (vivid dreams, nightmares, inability to sleep)
• Feeling of anxiety
• Headache

Uncommon undesirable effects
These can affect up to 1 in 100 people

• Nausea
• Sweating (including night sweats)
• Feeling restless and agitated
• Tremor
• Feeling confused or disoriented
• Diarrhea (loose stools)
• Feeling emotional or irritable
• Visual disturbances
• Fast or pounding heartbeat (palpitations)

Contact your doctor if you are worried about withdrawal effects when stopping Paroxetina
Teva Italia.
If you have any questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Side effects are more likely to occur during the first few weeks of treatment with this medicine.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects during treatment.
You may need to contact your doctor or go to hospital immediately.

Uncommon side effects
These may affect up to 1 in 100 people

• If you have unusual bruising or bleeding,including blood in your vomit or stools, seek medical attention immediately or go to hospital straight away.
• If you are unable to urinate, seek medical attention immediately or go to hospital straight away.

Rare side effects
These may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people

• In the event of seizures(fits), seek medical attention immediately or go to hospital straight away.
• If you feel restless and feel like you cannot sit or stand still,you may have a condition called akathisia. Increasing the dose of this medicine may worsen these sensations. If you feel like this, contact your doctor.
• If you feel tired, weak or confused and feel your muscles are painful, stiff or uncoordinated,this may be due to low levels of sodium in the blood. If you notice these symptoms, contact your doctor. Very rare side effectsThese may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people
• Allergic reactions, which can be severe, to Paroxetina Teva Italia.If you develop a red, swollen rash, swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, mouth or tongue, start to itch or have difficulty breathing (wheezing) or swallowing and feel a sensation of weakness or confusion, resulting in collapse or loss of consciousness, seek medical attention immediately or go to hospital straight away.
• If you experience some or all of the following symptoms,you may have a condition called serotonin syndrome or neuroleptic malignant syndrome. The symptoms include: feeling strongly agitated or irritable, feeling confused, feeling restless, feeling hot, sweating, trembling, shivering, hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there), muscle stiffness, sudden muscle contractions or a racing heartbeat. The severity can increase, leading to loss of consciousness. If you feel like this, contact your doctor.
• Acute glaucoma.If your eyes become painful and you develop blurred vision, contact your doctor.

Not known
Frequency cannot be estimatedon the basis of the available data

• Some people have had thoughts of harming themselves or committing suicide during treatment with this medicine or immediately after stopping it (see Thoughts of suicide and worsening of depression or anxiety disorderin section 2).
• Some people have become aggressive while taking this medicine.
• Excessive vaginal bleeding immediately after childbirth (postpartum hemorrhage); for further information see Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertilityin section 2. If you experience these side effects, contact your doctor.Other possible side effects during treatmentVery common side effectsThese may affect more than 1 in 10 people
• Nausea. Taking the medicine in the morning with food will reduce the chance of this happening.
• Changes in sexual drive or function. For example, difficulty achieving orgasm and, in men, abnormal erection and ejaculation.

• Increased cholesterol levels in the blood
• Loss of appetite
• Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) or feeling sleepy
• Abnormal dreams (including nightmares)
• Dizziness or tremors
• Headache
• Difficulty concentrating
• Feeling agitated
• Feeling unusually weak
• Blurred vision
• Yawning, dry mouth
• Diarrhoea or constipation
• Vomiting
• Weight gain
• Sweating

Uncommon side effects
These may affect up to 1 in 100 people

• A temporary increase or decrease in blood pressure, which can cause dizziness or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly
• Faster heartbeat than normal
• Lack of movement, rigidity, tremor or abnormal movements of the mouth and tongue
• Dilated pupils
• Skin rashes
• Itching
• Feeling confused
• Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there)
• Reduced number of white blood cells
• Inability to urinate (urinary retention) involuntary loss of urine (urinary incontinence)
• If you are a diabetic patient you may notice loss of control of blood sugar levels while taking Paroxetina Teva Italia. Consult your doctor for adjustment of insulin or diabetes medication dosage. Rare side effectsThese may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people
• Abnormal production of milk from the breast in men and women
• Slowed heartbeat
• Effects on the liver, highlighted by blood tests for liver function
• Panic attacks
• Hyperactive behaviour or thoughts (mania)
• Feeling detached from yourself (depersonalization)
• Feeling anxious
• An irresistible urge to move your legs (restless legs syndrome)
• Pain in joints or muscles
• Increase in the blood of a hormone called prolactin
• Menstrual cycle disorders (including heavy or irregular periods, bleeding between periods and absence or delay of periods)

Very rare side effects
These may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people

• Skin rash with possible blisters and appearance similar to small targets (dark central spots surrounded by a paler area, with a dark ring around the edge), called erythema multiforme.
• Widespread skin rash with blisters and peeling of the skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
• Widespread skin rash with blisters and peeling of the skin on most of the body surface (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
• Liver problems that cause the skin or whites of the eyes to turn yellow
• Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), a condition that causes an excessive amount of water and a decrease in the concentration of sodium (salt) in the body due to inappropriate chemical signals. Patients with SIADH can become seriously ill or have no symptoms.
• Fluid or water retention (which can cause swelling of the arms or legs)
• Sensitivity to sunlight
• Persistent painful erection
• Low number of platelets in the blood

• Inflammation of the colon (causing diarrhoea)
• Teeth grinding

Some patients have developed ringing, buzzing, whistling, tingling or other persistent noise in the ear
(tinnitus) while taking paroxetine.
An increased risk of bone fractures has been observed in patients treated with this type of medicine.

this medicine.

5. How to store Paroxetina Teva Italia

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the blister or the bottle and on the package
after Exp. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
If you use the tablets divided in half, be careful to store them safely inside the
packaging.
This medicine does not require any particular storage conditions.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to
dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Paroxetina Teva Italia contains

• The active ingredient is paroxetine. Each film-coated tablet containing 20 mg contains 20 mg of paroxetine (as paroxetine hydrochloride).
• The other ingredients are: mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Type A), magnesium stearate. The film coating contains: basic butyl methacrylate copolymer (E100), partially hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol (E1203), titanium dioxide (E171), talc (E553b), soybean lecithin (E322) and xanthan gum (E415).

Description of the appearance of Paroxetina Teva Italia and contents of the pack
The tablets are white, round, coated, biconvex, with a diameter of 10 mm, a breaking notch on one side and P20 engraved on the other.
The tablet can be divided into equal doses.
Paroxetina Teva Italia is available in blisters of 10, 14, 20, 28, 30, 50, 56, 60, 98 or 100 film-coated tablets,
blisters divisible for a single dose of 10x1, 14x1, 20x1, 28x1, 30x1, 50x1, 56x1, 60x1,
98x1 or 100x1 tablets and a bottle containing 28, 56, 100 or 250 film-coated tablets.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
