1. What is MAG2 and what is it used for
MAG2 is a medicine for oral use that contains magnesium pidolate as its active ingredient.
This medicine is used in the treatment of symptoms of magnesium deficiency, such as
for example: fatigue, muscle weakness and cramps that can be caused by various
situations, such as stress, unbalanced diet or pregnancy. MAG2 allows for a
rapid restoration of the amount of magnesium necessary for the body (physiological quota of
magnesium), ensuring effective treatment of magnesium deficiency.
Other disorders caused by a lack of magnesium can include: irritability,
nervousness, disorders affecting the stomach and intestines, irregular heartbeat.
In all these cases, it is necessary to take magnesium to obtain an improvement in symptoms.
For further information see the section “Health education notes”.
Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a short period of treatment.
2. What you need to know before taking MAG2
Do not take MAG2
- if you are allergic to magnesium pidolate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you have severe kidney failure (severe reduction in kidney function);
- if you are taking certain medicines to treat reduced heart function (digitalis therapy for heart failure).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor before taking MAG2, especially if you are in any of the following situations
or suffer from any of the following conditions:
- if you also have calcium deficiency, as magnesium deficiency must be corrected before taking calcium supplements;
- if you are pregnant (see “Pregnancy and breastfeeding”);
- if you need to give MAG2 to children (see “Use in children”);
- if your kidney function is reduced (kidney failure), as it may be necessary to reduce the dose and monitor kidney function and blood magnesium concentration (magnesemia) (see “Use in patients with impaired renal function”). Consult your doctor even if this condition has occurred in the past. Please note that a slowing (depression) of cardiovascular activity may occur during treatment.
Other medicines and MAG2
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might
take any other medicines.
Oral administration of magnesium can reduce the absorption of tetracyclines
(antibiotics); it is therefore advisable not to administer MAG2 and
tetracycline-based medicines at the same time, but to maintain at least 3 hours between the two
administrations.
Quinolones(antibiotics) should be administered at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after the
administration of medicines that, like MAG2, contain magnesium, to avoid
interference with their absorption.
In the case of concomitant administration of magnesium and cholecalciferol (vitamin D)it is
recommended to monitor the amount of calcium in the blood (calcemia) to avoid a possible
excess of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia).
Do not take products containing calcium saltsor phosphatesat the same time, as these products
prevent the intestinal absorption of magnesium.
The simultaneous intake of magnesium with medicines that act on the central nervous
system(CNS), or with alcohol (ethanol), may increase the effects on the central nervous system
of magnesium. In this case, take MAG2 only under medical supervision and only when
absolutely necessary.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
MAG2 can only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits to the mother
outweigh the potential risks, including those to the fetus.
Magnesium is considered compatible with breastfeeding.
Driving and operating machinery
No special recommendations.
MAG2 oral solution contains:
- sucrose:if your doctor has diagnosed you with intolerance to certain sugars, contact him before taking this medicine;
- parahydroxybenzoates (sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate E219 and sodium propyl
parahydroxybenzoate E217):may cause allergic reactions (including delayed reactions); - sodium: this medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) per dose, i.e. it is essentially “sodium-free”;
- ethanol: this medicine contains 18 mg of alcohol (ethanol) in each vial or sachet, which is equivalent to 1.8 mg/ml. The amount in each dose of this medicine is equivalent to less than 0.2 ml of wine or 0.5 ml of beer. The small amount of alcohol in this medicine will not produce significant effects.

3. How to take MAG2
Take this medicine following exactly as indicated in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended doses are:
Adults:3 vials or 3 single-dose sachets of solution or 2 sachets of powder per day. Take
MAG2 at regular intervals during the day.
Use in children:the correct dose will be established individually by the doctor, in relation to the
child's conditions.
Use in patients with impaired renal function:your doctor may prescribe a
lower dose and monitor kidney function and blood magnesium levels
(magnesemia). Do not take MAG2 if you suffer from severe renal failure.
Warning:do not exceed the indicated doses without your doctor's advice. Use only for short periods
of treatment.
- Vials of solution:shake before use. To open the vial, rotate and detach the top part. Take the contents of the vial as is or dilute it in water.
- Single-dose sachets of solution: take the contents of the sachet as is or dilute it in water.
- Sachets of powder:dissolve the contents of one sachet in water.
Consult your doctor if the disorder occurs repeatedly or if you notice any recent change
in its characteristics.
If you take more MAG2than you should
Oral magnesium overdose generally does not cause toxic effects in a subject with
normal kidney function. Cases of hypermagnesemia (excess magnesium in the blood) have been
reported only after administration of large amounts of magnesium during the treatment
of patients with severe impairment of kidney function (severe renal failure). The
disorders that may occur are low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting,
depression of the Central Nervous System, decreased reflexes, abnormalities
in the electrocardiogram (e.g., irregular heartbeat), onset of respiratory depression, coma, cardiac arrest, respiratory paralysis, failure to produce urine
(anuric syndrome) and muscle dysfunction. In these cases, you should consult a
doctor, who will provide appropriate treatment, which must include rehydration, forced diuresis and which in certain cases (renal failure) may also include dialysis (blood or
peritoneal).
In case of accidental ingestion/taking of an excessive dose of this medicine, consult
your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.
If you forget to take MAG2
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Start taking
the medicine as soon as possible.
If you stop taking MAG2
No effect.
If you have any questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Health education notes
- The importance of magnesiumMagnesium is an essential mineral for the functioning of the body. The human body contains about 24 grams of it, 99% of which is inside the cells. Magnesium is involved in numerous bodily activities, such as energy and protein production, and the transmission of nerve impulses. As a regulator of the nervous system, magnesium plays a fundamental role in the transmission of nerve impulses, which can be altered in certain situations (e.g. states of stress, unbalanced diet or pregnancy).
- Magnesium in the dietMagnesium is present in many foods, especially cocoa, almonds, fresh green vegetables, walnuts, unground wheat germ, corn, soybeans, figs, apples, fish, crustaceans and shellfish. The amount of magnesium ingested with meals is usually sufficient to cover the body's needs, however, magnesium deficiency can develop in some individuals (elderly, alcoholics, people with inappropriate diet), in some disease conditions (diabetes, malabsorption states, kidney disease, chronic diarrhoea, profuse vomiting, excessive sweating), or following certain treatments with medicines, mainly those that increase urine production (diuretics).
