1. What is LACRISOL and what is it used for
LACRISOL is a combination of two active ingredients: benzalkonium chloride and hypromellose. Benzalkonium chloride
is a quaternary ammonium compound with antiseptic properties with a disinfectant action that prevents the growth
of some types of bacteria and fungi. Hypromellose has emollient and lubricating properties, it hydrates the eyes.
This medicine is indicated for:
- disinfecting the mucous membrane of the eyes;
- hydrating dry eye in cases of poor hydration (insufficient tear secretion - dry eye syndrome).
Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a few days of treatment.
2. What you need to know before using LACRISOL
Do not use LACRISOL:
- if you are allergic to benzalkonium chloride, hypromellose or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if the person who needs to use this medicine is a child under 12 years of age, unless otherwise indicated by the doctor (See section “Children”).
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using LACRISOL.
Avoid using this medicine:
- for prolonged periods of time, as it may be toxic;
- if you have inflammation, wounds or abrasions of the cornea;
- if you wear contact lenses. In this case, after using LACRISOL, wait at least 15 minutes before applying the lenses.
- if you are undergoing therapy with other antiseptics and ophthalmic solutions (See section “Other medicines and LACRISOL”).
Do not inhale or ingest this medicine as toxic reactions, sometimes fatal, may occur (See the
section “If you use more LACRISOL than you should”).
During treatment with this medicine, especially for prolonged periods of time, allergic reactions (sensitization phenomena) may occur. In this case, stop the therapy and inform the doctor who
will establish a suitable therapy.
Benzalkonium chloride contained in the medicine may cause irritation to the eyes and may discolor contact
lenses.
Children
This medicine should not be given to children under 12 years of age, unless otherwise indicated
by the doctor (See section “Do not use LACRISOL”).
Other medicines and LACRISOL
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
During treatment with LACRISOL, avoid using other medicines for the care of the eyes (other antiseptics and
ophthalmic solutions).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you can use this medicine. However, ask your
doctor or pharmacist for advice before using LACRISOL if you are pregnant, suspect or are planning a
pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding.
Driving and operating machinery
This medicine does not alter the ability to drive or operate machinery.
3. How to use LACRISOL
Use LACRISOL following the instructions contained in this leaflet exactly, or as directed by your doctor or
pharmacist. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Keep your eye open and, by applying gentle pressure to the body of the bottle, insert one drop into the
lower part of the eye (conjunctival fornix).
The recommended dose is 1-2 drops, 2 or 4 times a day.
Do not exceed the recommended doses.
Use this medicine only for short periods of treatment, unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.
If you use more LACRISOL than you should
If you do not exceed the recommended doses, there is no risk of overdose.
Accidental ingestion may cause serious side effects, such as:
- vomiting, diarrhea;
- abdominal pain;
- skin irritation (erythematous rash, scaling);
- increased or decreased brain activity (stimulation or depression of the CNS);
- convulsions;
- fever (hyperpyrexia);
- damage to the kidneys and liver, rarely yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes (jaundice);
- serious problems with blood circulation (circulatory collapse and shock);
- hypotonia, muscle weakness;
- hypotension;
- death due to collapse.
If you accidentally ingest/take an excessive dose of LACRISOL, immediately inform your
doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
Treatment of poisoning due to ingestion of significant amounts of quaternary ammonium compounds is
symptomatic. The doctor will administer medications to alleviate your discomfort (lenitive), avoiding
inducing vomiting (emesis) or gastric lavage.
If you forget to use LACRISOL
Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any doubts about using this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Frequency not known(the frequency of which cannot be estimated from available data):
- intolerance reactions, such as burning and irritation of the eyes. These effects are not serious and usually do not require changes to treatment. If any side effects occur, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Reporting of side effects
If you get any side effects, even those not listed in this leaflet, tell your doctor or
pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly through the national reporting system at https://www.aifa.gov.it/content/segnalazioni-reazioni-avverse. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
5. How to store LACRISOL
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the packaging after “Exp”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month and the product in intact packaging, correctly
stored.
After the first opening of the bottle, the medicine must be used within 15 days.
Do not dispose of any medicine in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What LACRISOL contains
- The active ingredients are benzalkonium chloride and hypromellose. 100 ml of solution contains 0.0045 g of benzalkonium chloride and 0.5 g of hypromellose.
- The other ingredients are: boric acid, sodium tetraborate, sodium chloride, purified water.
