1. What is HIRUDOID and what is it used for

HIRUDOID contains the active ingredient glycosaminoglycan polysulphate, which has anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic activity, meaning it prevents the formation of blood clots (thrombi).
HIRUDOID is used to treat:

• inflammation of a vein located below the surface of the skin (superficial phlebitis) or a blood clot that causes inflammation of a vein (thrombophlebitis);
• inflammation caused by the dilation of a vein (varicose veins);
• hematomas.

2. What you need to know before using HIRUDOID

Do not use HIRUDOID

• if you are allergic to the active ingredient, to an heparinoid (medicine with an anticoagulant action similar to that of heparin) or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using HIRUDOID.
Stop treatment and contact your doctor immediately if allergic reactions occur
after applying the cream.

Other medicines and HIRUDOID
No interactions of HIRUDOID with other medicines are known.
However, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might
take any other medicines.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Driving and using machines
HIRUDOID does not impair the ability to drive vehicles or use machines.

HIRUDOID contains para-hydroxybenzoates, lanolin and cetyl stearyl alcohol
Para-hydroxybenzoatesmay cause allergic reactions (including delayed reactions).
Lanolinand cetyl stearyl alcoholmay cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).

3. How to use HIRUDOID

Use this medicine following exactly the instructions in this leaflet or as indicated by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
If the inflammation is not particularly widespread, the recommended dose is 3-5 cm of cream 1-2 times a day.
It is possible to spread the cream dose onto a gauze, then applying it to the area to be treated.
If the inflammation is widespread, the recommended dose is 25 cm of cream per day for 3-4 days,
after which the dose must be halved and treatment continued until the symptoms disappear.

Method of use:

• Gently massage near the inflamed area, avoiding the affected part.
• Do not apply the cream to open wounds or mucous membranes.
• Do not ingest.

If you use more HIRUDOID than you should
If you accidentally use an excessive dose of HIRUDOID, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

No adverse effects have been reported following the use of HIRUDOID.

5. How to store HIRUDOID

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pack after Scad. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of any medicine in the drain or in household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.

What contains HIRUDOID

• The active ingredient is glycosaminoglycan polysulphate. 100 g of cream contains 0.3 g (equivalent to
• 25,000 I.U.) of active ingredient.
• The other ingredients are glycerin, potassium hydroxide, stearic acid, lanolin, cetyl stearyl alcohol, myristyl alcohol, thymol, methyl para-hydroxybenzoate, propyl para-hydroxybenzoate, isopropyl alcohol, purified water.

Description of the appearance of HIRUDOID and contents of the pack
Cream for cutaneous use of white colour and with characteristic odour.
HIRUDOID is available in packs of 40 g of cream in aluminium tube.

If the inflammation is not particularly extensive, the recommended dose is 5-10 cm of gel several times a day.
If the inflammation is extensive, larger amounts of gel can be used for 3-4 days, after which the dose must be halved and treatment continued until the symptoms disappear.
How to use:

• Gently massage near the inflamed area, avoiding the diseased part.
• Do not apply the gel to open wounds or mucous membranes.
• Do not ingest.

• Gently massage the treated part to promote absorption of the cream.
• If you suffer from particularly painful inflammation and in the presence of thrombosis, gently massage the cream onto the skin area affected and around it, and cover with a cotton gauze or similar.
• Do not apply the cream to open wounds or mucous membranes.
• Do not ingest.

If you use more HIRUDOID than you should
If you accidentally use an excessive dose of HIRUDOID, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
