What is GASPAN and what it is used for
GASPAN is a traditional herbal medicinal product containing peppermint essential oil and caraway oil.
GASPAN is indicated for the treatment of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, in particular mild cramps,
flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain, even in patients with dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome
(IBS).
The use of this traditional herbal medicinal product, for the indicated therapeutic indications, is based
exclusively on long-standing experience of use.
GASPAN is indicated for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.
See your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 2-4 weeks.
What you need to know before you take GASPAN
Do not take GASPAN
- if you are allergic to peppermint, menthol, caraway, other umbelliferous plants (anise, fennel, celery, coriander and dill) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- if you have liver disease, gallstones and inflammatory diseases of the bile ducts (cholangitis) or other biliary disorders.
- if you suffer from a lack of acid in the gastric juice (achlorhydria).
- in children under 8 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking GASPAN.
Patients suffering from heartburn or hiatal hernia may experience a worsening of these
symptoms after taking peppermint oil. In this case, treatment should be discontinued.
Peppermint oil should be used with caution in conditions of inflammation and ulceration of the gastrointestinal
tract.
Avoid other medicines containing peppermint oil while using this medicine.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist immediatelyif unexplained abdominal pain persists or
worsens, or is accompanied by symptoms such as fever, jaundice, vomiting or blood in the stool.
Children
As there are no adequately documented studies on the use of this medicine in children aged
8 to 12 years, use in this age group is not recommended.
Other medicines and GASPAN
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicines.
No interactions with other medicines have been observed.
In order to prevent premature dissolution of the gastro-resistant coating, GASPAN
- must be taken at least 30 minutes before meals
- must be taken at least one hour apart from taking other medicines used to reduce stomach acid such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors or H2-receptor antagonists.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy
Data on the use of peppermint essential oil and/or caraway oil in pregnant women are limited.
Animal studies are insufficient with regard to reproductive toxicity. GASPAN
is not recommended during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding
It is not known whether the components of peppermint essential oil and/or caraway oil or their metabolites are
secreted into breast milk. As a risk to the newborn/infant cannot be excluded, GASPAN should not
be used during breastfeeding.
Fertility
There are no data on the effects of peppermint essential oil and/or caraway oil on fertility.
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, are planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding,
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Driving and using machines
No studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect on the ability to drive and operate machines.
GASPAN contains sorbitol.This medicine contains 11.8 mg of sorbitol in each capsule.
How to take GASPAN
Take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you
have doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age
The recommended dose is 1 capsule 2 times a day.
Method of administration
The capsule should be swallowed whole with water at least 30 minutes before meals (preferably
in the morning and at noon). The capsules can also be taken without a subsequent meal.
The capsules must be intact and must not be chewed, to ensure that the active substance is not
released prematurely. Premature release of the active substance can cause local irritation
in the mouth and esophagus.
Duration of treatment
If symptoms persist or worsen after 2 - 4 weeks of use of the medicine, consult your doctor or
pharmacist.
Use in children
GASPAN is not recommended in children under 12 years of age.
If you take more GASPAN than you should
The daily amount of GASPAN should not exceed the dose indicated in this leaflet or
prescribed by your doctor. If you have inadvertently taken one or two capsules more than indicated, this
generally has no harmful consequences.
Symptoms of an overdose may include:
- fatigue
- severe gastrointestinal symptoms, nausea, diarrhea, rectal ulcers
- convulsions, loss of consciousness, respiratory arrest
- altered heart rate
- lack of coordination and other central nervous system problems.
If you have taken a dose of GASPAN greater than recommended, inform your doctor or go to the nearest
hospital, especially if a large amount of GASPAN has been taken.
If you forget to take GASPAN
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Continue treatment with

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Gastrointestinal disorders:
Gastric disturbances: (e.g. eructation, heartburn, perianal burning, nausea). Frequency not known.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders / Immune system disorders:
Allergic reactions such as rash and itching. Frequency not known.
If you experience the following effects, stop taking the capsules and consult your doctor immediately:
allergic reactions to menthol, e.g. anaphylactic shock, excessively slow heartbeat (bradycardia),
red skin rashes (erythematous rash), tremor (muscle tremor), lack of
coordination (ataxia) and headache.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed
in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly through the national reporting system at

By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this
medicine.
How to store GASPAN
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pack and/or container (blister). The
expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not store above 30°C.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of
medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
Contents of the pack and other information
What GASPAN contains
- The active ingredients are peppermint oil and caraway oil.
- Each gastro-resistant soft capsule contains 90 mg of Mentha x piperita L., aetheroleum (peppermint essential oil) and 50 mg of Carum carvi L., aetheroleum (caraway essential oil).
- The other ingredients are: Capsule contents: medium-chain triglycerides Capsule shell: succinylated gelatin, glycerol 85%, sorbitol (E-420), titanium dioxide (E 171), yellow iron oxide (E 172), Patent Blue V (E 131), Quinoline Yellow (E 104). Coating: acrylic acid - ethyl acrylate copolymer dispersion 30%, propylene glycol, polysorbate 80, glycerol monostearate 40-55, sodium dodecyl sulfate.
Description of GASPAN and contents of the pack
GASPAN is an oval, opaque, light green soft capsule containing a transparent oil
tending towards yellow. GASPAN is available in blisters containing 14, 28, 42 and 84 gastro-resistant soft capsules. Not
all pack sizes may be marketed.
