it contains important information for you.

- This medicine has been prescribed for you only. Do not pass it on to others, even if their symptoms are the same as yours, as it could be harmful.

1. What is Furecis and what is it used for
Nitrofurantoina is an antibiotic. It is used to prevent and treat infections
of the bladder, kidneys and other parts of the urinary tract.
2. What you need to know before you take Furecis
Do not take Furecis if:
- you are allergic to nitrofurantoina or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6). An allergic reaction may include skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
- you are taking any other medicine that contains nitrofurantoina;
- you suffer from a kidney disease, which seriously compromises their activity;
- you are in the final stages of pregnancy (labor or delivery), as there is a risk that this medicine may have effects on the baby;
- you suffer from a blood disease called porphyria;
- you are deficient in an enzyme called G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase);
- your child is less than three months old and this medicine has been prescribed for them;
- if you are breastfeeding a baby with a deficiency of the enzyme G6PD (glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase) known or suspected.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking Furecis
if:
- you are diabetic;
- you suffer from a disease that causes severe weakness;
- you are anemic (have a low value of red blood cells that causes paleness of the skin, fatigue or shortness of breath), have a vitamin B deficiency or blood salt levels are altered (your doctor will inform you about this);
- you have a history of allergic reactions. The aforementioned conditions may increase the possibility of developing undesirable effects that cause damage to the nervous system, causing an alteration of the perceived sensations or sharp pains.
- if you suffer from a lung, liver or nervous system disease. If you need to take Furecis for a prolonged period of time, your doctor may want to regularly check the functioning of your liver and lungs.
- you experience fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, itching, skin rashes, joint pain, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine and pale or gray stools. These may be symptoms of liver disorders.
Children with a body weight of less than 25 kg
For children with a body weight of less than 25 kg, the possibility of
using Nitrofurantoina suspension should be evaluated.
Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
Children under the age of 3 months should not take Furecis.
Other medicines and Furecis
Tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are taking any of the medicines
listed below, if you have recently taken or might take any other
medicine, including over-the-counter medicines. If taken with
Furecis, the other medicine or Furecis may not work properly.
- Antacids for indigestion (e.g. magnesium trisilicate).
- Medicines for gout (e.g. probenecid or sulfinpyrazone).
- Medicines that slow down the passage of food in the stomach (e.g. atropine, hyoscine).
- Medicines used to treat increased pressure in the eye (glaucoma), such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g. acetazolamide).
- Medicines to reduce the acidity of the urine (e.g. potassium citrate mixture).
- Medicines known as quinolones (used to treat infections).
- Oral contraceptives, for example “the pill”. You should use additional contraceptive measures such as using a condom, as antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of the pill.
- The typhoid vaccine, administered to prevent typhoid fever.
If you have any doubts about any of these medicines, talk to
your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
Furecis can interfere with the results of some tests for glucose in the urine.
Nitrofurantoina capsules with food and drink
Furecis should always be taken during meals, with food or milk. Taking
this medicine with food or milk makes it more effective.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or
are breastfeeding, ask your doctor, pharmacist or
nurse for advice before taking this medicine.
Furecis should not be used during labor or delivery because there is a risk
that taking this medicine at this stage may have effects on the
baby.
Driving and using machines
Furecis can cause dizziness and fatigue. You should not drive or operate
machinery if you experience these disorders.
Furecis contains lactose.If your doctor has diagnosed you with an intolerance to
some sugars, contact him before taking this medicine.
3. How to take Furecis
Take this medicine following exactly what is reported in this leaflet and the doctor's instructions, and complete the entire treatment cycle, even if you feel better. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
Furecis must be swallowed whole and always taken with food or milk.
Taking this medicine with food or milk makes it more effective.
Adults:
appropriate instructions must be provided. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if the instructions are not clear.
The usual doses are:
- Treatment of infections: one 50 mg capsule or one 100 mg capsule four times a day for seven days.
- Prevention of further infections: one 50 mg capsule or one 100 mg capsule before bedtime.
- Prevention of infections during surgical procedures: one 50 mg capsule four times a day on the day of surgery and subsequently after three days.
Children with a body weight of less than 25 g
For children with a body weight of less than 25 kg, the possibility of using Nitrofurantoina suspension should be evaluated. Carefully follow the doctor's instructions.
Children under 3 months of age must not take Furecis.
Medical checks
You will be carefully monitored by the doctor to identify any effects concerning the liver, lungs, blood or nervous system.
Furecis may interfere with the results of some tests for glucose in the urine.
If you take more Furecis than you should
If you take more Furecis than you should, or if you suspect that a child may have ingested capsules, go immediately to the emergency room of the nearest hospital or contact your doctor. Bring with you the remaining capsules, the packaging and/or information about what the child has taken.
If you forget to take Furecis
Do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten doses. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember and take the next dose at the correct time.
If you stop taking Furecis
Do not stop treatment with Furecis without first discussing it with your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. The doctor will tell you how long to take this medicine. Do not interrupt treatment before as indicated, even if you feel better.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
Most of these effects are mild and disappear when treatment with Furecis is stopped.
All medicines can cause allergic reactions, although serious allergic reactions are rare. If you notice sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing,
swelling of the eyelids, face, lips or tongue, skin rash or
itching (especially all over the body), STOPimmediatelythe
treatment and consult a doctor.
If any of the side effects listed below occur, stop the
treatment with Furecis and consult your doctor.
Not common: may affect up to 1 in 100 people
- vomiting, stomach pain (abdominal pain), loose stools (diarrhea)
Rare: may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people
- deficiency of all blood cells (aplastic anemia)
- loss of consciousness (fainting)
- bluish discoloration of the skin (cyanosis)
- depression, feeling of intense excitement and happiness (euphoria), confusion, psychotic reactions
- weakness, numbness and pain caused by damage to the nerves, usually in the feet and hands (peripheral neuropathy), blurred vision
- dizziness, involuntary eye movement (nystagmus), headache, lightheadedness or drowsiness
- long-lasting reactions related to the lungs (chronic pulmonary reactions)
- jaundice (inflammation of the liver that causes yellowing of the skin or the white of the eye), inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), liver failure
- in some patients, various rashes or skin reactions have occurred. These can manifest as skin peeling, rash with redness or fever, accompanied by a rapid heart rate and severe rash associated with blisters.
Not known: frequency cannot be estimated based on available data
- a blood disease called porphyria
- infections caused by fungi that are not sensitive to Furecis
- blood cells have been affected in some patients. This could cause bruising, delayed blood clotting, sore throat, fever, anemia, and sensitivity to cold or persistent chills.
- allergic reactions, other reactions may include inflammation of the salivary glands (causing facial pain), inflammation of the pancreas (causing severe abdominal pain) and joint pain
- increased pressure in the head (causing severe headache)
- the lungs may react to Furecis. This reaction can develop quickly, within a week of starting treatment, or very slowly, especially in elderly patients. This can cause fever, chills, cough and shortness of breath.
- nausea, loss of appetite
- short-term hair loss
- unusual rashes may or may not be accompanied by fever, fatigue or joint pain (lupus-like syndrome)
- urine turning yellow or brown
- weakness, fever, chills, joint pain
- Inflammation of the walls of small blood vessels, causing skin lesions
- Inflammation of the liver due to a reaction of its immune system against liver cells
- Inflammation of the kidney tissue surrounding the tubules, causing kidney failure
It should be noted that, during the intake of Furecis, urine may assume
a dark yellow or brown color. This is perfectly normal and does not
constitute a valid reason to interrupt the intake of the medicine.
If any of the side effects should worsen or if you notice
any side effect not listed in this leaflet, inform your
doctor or pharmacist.

this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects

on the safety of this medicine.
5. How to store Furecis
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pack
after “EXP.”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
This medicine does not require any special storage conditions.
Do not dispose of any medicine in waste water or household waste. Ask your
pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help to
protect the environment.
6. Package Contents and Other Information
What Furecis contains
The active ingredient is nitrofurantoin. The other components are lactose monohydrate,
pregelatinized starch, talc. The capsule coating contains
gelatin, quinoline yellow (E104), yellow iron oxide (E172) and titanium dioxide
(E171). The ink contains shellac, propylene glycol, potassium hydroxide
and black iron oxide (E172).
Furecis capsules are available in two dosages, containing 50 mg or 100 mg
of nitrofurantoin.
Description of Furecis appearance and package contents
The 50 mg capsule is a yellow and white capsule with “EM28” printed
in black. It is also marked with a black circular band.
The 100 mg capsule is a yellow capsule with “EM29” printed in black.
It is also marked with a black band.
Furecis is available in packs of 20 and 30 capsules in blisters.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
