1. What is DORICOFLU and what is it used for
DORICOFLU contains the active ingredient flunisolide which belongs to a group of medicines
called corticosteroids that reduce inflammation and relieve allergy symptoms.
DORICOFLU is indicated for the treatment of allergic diseases affecting the respiratory tract
such as:
- bronchial asthma and asthmatic chronic bronchitis, characterized by inflammation of the bronchi causing severe difficulty in breathing;
- seasonal and chronic rhinitis, characterized by inflammation and irritation of the nasal mucosa.
2. What you need to know before using DORICOFLU
Do not use DORICOFLU
- if you are allergic to flunisolide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from tuberculosis (active or quiescent), a serious lung infection;
- if you have developed infections caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi;
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, except in the cases listed in the “Pregnancy and breastfeeding” section which still require careful monitoring by your doctor.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using DORICOFLU.
If you are already being treated with corticosteroids, taken orally or by injection, which
act in a widespread manner (systemic treatment), your doctor will prescribe DORICOFLU
with caution and will keep you under close control if they suspect that your adrenal glands are functioning less than
normal (adrenal dysfunction). Initially, you should use this medicine
while continuing treatment with systemic corticosteroids, subsequently the doctor,
by performing periodic checks, will gradually adjust the doses of the two medicines.
If situations of stress or a severe asthma attack occur during this transition period, inform your doctor because it may be necessary to resume therapy with corticosteroids
systemically. During therapy, the doctor must perform regular examinations to check the
functionality of the adrenal glands (corticosurrenal functionality), including specific analysis of the levels of an
hormone (cortisol) in the blood, performed early in the morning, in a resting state.
Inform your doctor if you have a blocked nose (nasal congestion) or abundant nasal secretions, as
it may be useful to take medicines that reduce mucus accumulation (topical vasoconstrictors
).
Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances.
Furthermore, if any of the following conditions apply to you, inform your doctor who will decide whether to use
DORICOFLU with caution or prescribe you alternative therapy (See also the section “Do not use
DORICOFLU”):
- you have a severe respiratory tract infection called tuberculosis;
- you have developed infections caused by fungi, bacteria or viruses and are not taking any medicine to treat them;
- you have an eye infection caused by a virus called herpes simplex;
- in the past you have had trauma or injuries to the nose (ulcer of the nasal septum) or you frequently have nosebleeds (epistaxis), as this medicine delays wound healing (inhibitory effect on cicatricial processes).
Do not use DORICOFLU to treat acute asthma attacks, as the effect of this medicine is not
immediate. Use this medicine regularly for a few days as prescribed by
your doctor.
During treatment with DORICOFLU, especially for long periods of time and at high doses, the
following side effects may occur (See the section “Possible side effects”):
- disorders due to an excess of corticosteroids in the blood (Cushing's syndrome);
- accumulation of fat in the face and abdomen (Cushingoid appearance);
- decreased activity of certain glands called adrenal glands (inhibition of adrenal activity, adrenal suppression);
- delayed growth, in children and adolescents;
- fragility of the bones (reduction in bone mineral density);
- eye problems (cataract, glaucoma);
- restless behavior, accompanied by excessive and involuntary body movements (psychomotor hyperactivity);
- sleep disturbances;
- anxiety;
- depression or aggression, especially in children;
- allergic reactions (sensitization phenomena). In this case, inform your doctor who will establish the most appropriate therapy for you;
- alterations of the mucous membranes (atrophy of the mucous membranes);
- rarely, alteration of the normal microbial flora of the upper airways (dismicrobismi). For this reason, the doctor will perform specific checks, especially if you use this medicine for prolonged periods and, based on the results, will prescribe you suitable therapy.
To minimize the risk of side effects occurring, your doctor will prescribe you the
minimum dose capable of controlling the symptoms of your illness. Do not exceed the recommended doses.
DORICOFLU, like other corticosteroids, can mask the symptoms of infections and, during
treatment with this medicine, new infections may develop.
For athletes, the use of this medicine without actual therapeutic necessity
constitutes doping and may result in positive doping tests.
Children
The use of this medicine is not recommended in children under the age of 4 years.
Other medicines and DORICOFLU
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken other medicines, including
medicines obtained without a prescription.
Some medicines may increase the effects of Doricoflu and your doctor may want to keep you
under close observation if you are taking these medicines (including some medicines for the
treatment of HIV: ritonavir, cobicistat).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding with
breast milk, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
Do not use DORICOFLU during the first 3 months of pregnancy
If you are pregnant for more than 3 months or if you are breastfeeding, use this medicine only
in case of absolute necessity and under the strict control of your doctor (See the section “Do not use
DORICOFLU”).
Driving and operating machinery
No effects of this medicine on the ability to drive vehicles or operate
machinery are known.
3. How to use DORICOFLU
Use this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
DORICOFLU must be used with electric nebulizers and must not be diluted. Since a residue of medicine may adhere to the walls of the vial or to the bottom of the nebulizer, during preparation, it may be necessary to supplement it.
Adults
The recommended dose is 1 mg (25 drops), 2 times a day.
Use in children
In children over 4 years of age, the recommended dose is 500 micrograms (12-13 drops), 2 times a day.
If you use more DORICOFLU than you should
If you take an excessive dose of this medicine in a short period of time, disorders of the normal activity of the adrenal glands (suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function) may occur. In this case, it is necessary to reduce the dose of medicine to be administered.
In case of accidental ingestion/administration of an excessive dose of DORICOFLU, immediately inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
If you forget to use DORICOFLU
Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
