1. What ANTEPSIN is and what it is used for
ANTEPSIN contains the active ingredient sucralfate, which belongs to the category of medicines used for the
treatment of gastroduodenal ulcer. It works by forming a protective barrier on the lesions, preventing
further irritation caused by the acids produced in the stomach.
This medicine is used for the treatment of:
- lesions of the stomach (gastric ulcer), and lesions of the intestine (duodenal ulcer);
- inflammation of the stomach as a transient or permanent manifestation (acute gastritis and symptomatic chronic gastritis);
- stomach disorders due to the use of anti-inflammatory medicines belonging to the category of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) (NSAID-induced gastropathy);
- inflammation of the esophagus due to the reflux of liquids and/or acidic foods (reflux esophagitis).
2. What you need to know before taking ANTEPSIN
Do not take ANTEPSIN
- if you are allergic to sucralfate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if the patient is a premature newborn;
- if you are pregnant.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking ANTEPSIN.
Inform your doctor and use this medicine with caution avoiding prolonged treatments in the following cases:
- if you suffer from severe kidney problems (renal insufficiency);
- if you are undergoing mechanical blood filtration (hemodialysis);
- if you suffer from disorders in the movement of food in the digestive tract, as accumulations of undigested material (bezoars) may form.
Children and adolescents
ANTEPSIN is not recommended in children due to the lack of safety and efficacy data for
this medicine.
Other medicines and ANTEPSIN
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any
other medicines including those available without a prescription.
Sucralfate may alter the effect of some drugs including:
- medicines used for the treatment of bacterial infections (antibiotics) such as tetracyclines, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin;
- ketoconazole, a medicine used for the treatment of fungal infections;
- medicines used in the treatment of stomach disorders such as gastritis and ulcers, such as cimetidine and ranitidine;
- digoxin, a medicine used in the treatment of heart disorders;
- phenytoin, a medicine used in case of epilepsy;
- theophylline, a medicine used in the treatment of respiratory disorders such as bronchial asthma.
If you have to take other medicines, including those listed above, do so at least two hours before or after
taking ANTEPSIN.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding,
ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use this medicine only if absolutely necessary and under the supervision of your doctor.
Driving and using machines
This medicine does not impair the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
ANTEPSIN 1g tablets contains hydrogenated oil
This medicine contains hydrogenated castor oil which may cause stomach upset and diarrhea.
ANTEPSIN 1 g/5 ml oral suspension contains hydroxybenzoates
This medicine contains hydroxybenzoates which may cause allergic reactions (including delayed reactions).
3. How to take ANTEPSIN
Take this medicine following exactly the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Take the medicine on an empty stomach, one hour before meals and before bedtime.
ANTEPSIN 1g tablets
The recommended dose is 1 tablet, 4 times a day, unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.
ANTEPSIN 1 g/5 ml oral suspension
The recommended dose is 1 measuring spoon (5 ml), 4 times a day, unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.
Shake the suspension before use.
If you take more ANTEPSIN than you should
In case of accidental ingestion/administration of an excessive dose of ANTEPSIN, immediately notify your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
If you forget to take it
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you have any doubts about the use of this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Very rare(may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
- formation of accumulations of undigested material (bezoars).
Not known(frequency cannot be estimated from available data)
- diarrhoea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, feeling of fullness in the stomach (heaviness of the stomach);
- constipation, with prolonged treatments;
- dry mouth;
- skin irritation and itching (skin rash);
- dizziness;
- insomnia;
- headache;
- lower back pain;
- allergic-type reactions, including skin irritations (urticaria), swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, especially around the mouth and eyes (angioedema), difficulty breathing and allergic rhinitis (rhinitis).

By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of
this medicine.
5. How to store ANTEPSIN
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pack after “Exp.”.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month and the medicine correctly stored.
Do not dispose of any medicine in waste water or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of
medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information
What ANTEPSIN 1 g tablets contains
- The active ingredient is sucralfate. Each tablet contains 1 g of sucralfate.
- The other ingredients are calcium carboxymethylcellulose, magnesium stearate, hydrogenated castor oil, microcrystalline cellulose, natural lemon flavour.
What ANTEPSIN 1 g/5 ml oral suspension contains
- The active ingredient is sucralfate. Each 100 ml of suspension contains 20 g of sucralfate (1g/5 ml).
- The other ingredients are sodium methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, sodium propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, disodium phosphate monobasic dihydrate, xanthan gum, anise flavour, caramel flavour, disodium saccharinate dihydrate, glycerol 85%, deionised water.
