1. What Alfatex is and what it is used for
Alfatex is a pharmaceutical association of:
- betamethasone disodium phosphate which belongs to the class of corticosteroids and has an anti-inflammatory effect,
- chloramphenicol, sodium colistimetate and tetracycline which act against bacteria that can cause eye infections. Alfatex is used in the treatment of eye inflammations (allergic, vernal, phlyctenular and infectious conjunctivitis, blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoendotheliitis, keratoconjunctivitis, scleritis and episcleritis, uveitis), post-surgical and post-traumatic ocular inflammations, and lesions from thermal and chemical agents.
Contact your doctor if, at the end of the prescribed therapy, you do not notice an improvement or if you notice a worsening.
2. What you need to know before using Alfatex
Do not use Alfatex
- if you are allergic to betamethasone, chloramphenicol, colistimetate, tetracycline or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- if you suffer from:
- increased pressure inside the eye (ocular hypertension);
- inflammation of the cornea (the transparent membrane covering the colored part of the eye) caused by Herpes simplex or other viral infections involving the cornea and are in an acute ulcerative phase (except if you are using specific medicines for the herpes virus at the same time);
- viral infection of the transparent membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids (conjunctivitis with ulcerative keratitis even in the initial stage);
- eye infection by mycobacteria (tuberculosis of the eye);
- eye infection by fungi (fungal eye infection);
- eye inflammation with pus production (acute purulent ophthalmia), infection of the transparent membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids with pus production (purulent conjunctivitis);
- inflammation of the eyelid margin with pus production (purulent blepharitis);
- stye.
Topical corticosteroids should not be used in corneal lesions or abrasions as they delay the healing of damaged tissues, favoring the onset and spread of any infections.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Alfatex.
Some patients may experience sensitization (allergic reaction). If you experience symptoms such as itching or redness of the skin in the affected area, stop treatment and consult your doctor to start appropriate therapy.
The use of corticosteroids in patients with bacterial, viral or fungal conjunctivitis may mask the signs of infection progression.
Prolonged use of topical antibiotics can cause the growth of microorganisms that are not sensitive to them. You may become more susceptible to eye infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.
Consult your doctor if your symptoms worsen or if they recur.
If you use the medicine for a long period at excessive doses, toxic effects may occur.
Rare cases of bone marrow failure (the bone marrow stops producing new blood cells) have been reported following prolonged use of chloramphenicol for topical use.
For this reason, Alfatex should be used according to the exact instructions of your doctor.
Application of corticosteroids to the eyes for a long period can cause increased pressure inside the eye (ocular hypertension), vision problems and clouding of the lens inside the eye, called a cataract. If you use Alfatex for a long period of time, you should have your eye pressure checked regularly.
Consult your doctor before using this medicine if you suffer from diseases that cause thinning of the transparent membrane covering the colored part of the eye (corneal thinning).
Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances.
Children
In early infancy, the product should be administered only when absolutely necessary and under the direct supervision of a doctor.
Alfatex should not be used in children under three years of age in any case.
