1. What is Ezetimibe TecniGen and what is it used for
Ezetimibe TecniGen is a medicine used to lower high cholesterol levels.
Ezetimibe TecniGen lowers total cholesterol levels, “bad” cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and fatty substances in the blood, called triglycerides. Furthermore, Ezetimibe TecniGen
increases levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).
Ezetimibe, the active ingredient of Ezetimibe TecniGen, works by reducing the levels of cholesterol
absorbed in the intestine.
Ezetimibe TecniGen adds to the cholesterol-lowering effect of statins, a
group of medicines that reduce the cholesterol produced by the body itself.
Cholesterol is one of several fatty substances present in the blood. Total cholesterol is
mainly composed of LDL and HDL cholesterol.
LDL cholesterol is often called “bad” cholesterol because it can accumulate in the
walls of the arteries forming plaques. The formation of these plaques can
eventually lead to a narrowing of the arteries. This narrowing can slow down
or block the flow of blood to vital organs such as the heart and brain. Blocking the flow
of blood can cause a heart attack or stroke.
HDL cholesterol is often called “good” cholesterol because it helps prevent the accumulation
of bad cholesterol in the arteries and protects against heart disease.
Triglycerides are another form of fat in the body that can increase the risk of
heart disease.
This medicine is used for patients who cannot control their cholesterol levels through
diet alone. You must maintain a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking this medicine.
Page 1of 6
Ezetimibe TecniGen is used in addition to a cholesterol-lowering diet if
you have:
- Increased cholesterol levels in the blood (primary hypercholesterolemia [heterozygous familial and non-familial])
- Together with a statin when cholesterol levels are not well controlled by the statin alone
- Alone, when treatment with statins is not appropriate or well tolerated
- an inherited disease (homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) that increases cholesterol levels in the blood. You will also be prescribed a statin and you may be prescribed other treatments
- An inherited disease (homozygous sitosterolemia, also known as phytosterolemia) that increases levels of plant sterols in the blood.
If you have heart disease, Ezetimibe TecniGen in combination with medicines that
lower cholesterol called statins, reduces the risk of heart attack, myocardial infarction, stroke,
surgery to increase blood flow to the heart or hospitalization for
chest pain.
Ezetimibe TecniGen does not help with weight loss.
2. What you need to know before taking Ezetimibe TecniGen
